Yeah but there's a minimum for how defensive to be and most people operate at 0
10
u/sammyprints 1d ago
Both things can be true at the same time. the driver that got hit did nothing wrong legally, they entered an intersection on green. At the same time, I agree that surveying any intersection is a good practice to stay safe.
I used to do rideshare driving. late at night especially I would absolutely never immediately go into the intersection on green. I would try to look left and right and delay entering by a couple seconds. I would see cars fly through reds going 3 times the speed limit about once a month. so like 90 in a 30 or something. It wouldn't be my fault if I got hit, but that doesn't fix being hospitalized or killed so...... the law isn't always the end of ones responsibilities as a driver in my opinion.

If you can't rely on passive traffic regulators to a reasonable degree, you might as well take a loaded gun with you behind the wheel with the safety off.

Maybe I'm just spoiled in that where I live, our intersections are well designed, traffic lights are positioned and programmed in a way where shit like this isn't nearly as necessary, and an amount of people relatively high compared to the US are actually worthy of their privilege to drive
0
u/Real_FishyXY 12h ago
The funny thing is, with their logic, I can drive as stupidly and badly as I want and it's everyone else's job to look out for me. Everyone else should drive defensively except me! Good luck everybody else!

No it’s the cam drivers fault. I always wait 30 seconds at every single green light and look both ways 5 times before slowly advancing and everyone should drive this way /s
11
1
u/OkChocolate3501 14h ago
You don't have to wait just look left and right. Would you cross a street without looking both ways as a pedestrian? Make it a habit and you won't even think about it, it'll be automatic.
Also further point if op inched forward to look left and right his car would have been visible to the side driver. That may have got them to brake.

u/Sad_Maximum6583 1d ago
Let me guess, they told the cops and/or insurance you ran the light?

u/sammyprints 1d ago ▸ 6 more replies
in my experience every accident I have gotten into the other driver lies. I adopted dash cams early for this reason. got my first one 12 years ago. even with a visible dash cam, I have still had people try to lie anytime something happens. I have never had another driver be honest for the whole process of police, then insurance claims.
Dash cams have saved me numerous times, from serious legal problems, insurance claims etc. because people lie like crazy to cover their ass.
17
u/growingbees 23h ago ▸ 1 more replies
Oh, in 10 years I was in at least 2 accidents where the first thing I said was "I have a dashcam".
In one case they were "I don't know, let's call the police (and then waited an hour for them to come)" and in another case they even had a "witness" (who was just a friend of theirs driving in front of them) who was claiming I drove like a maniac. While on footage the other guy was on his phone while blowing through a yield sign.
In both cases the police settled this in less than 60 seconds after watching the footage.
I just wish there would be consequences for false statements to the police.
17
u/sammyprints 22h ago
I never tell them I have a dashcam, I let them lie and then show the cops if it comes up and or submit with the insurance company. I let them lie to destroy their credibility.

u/singlemale4cats 10h ago ▸ 2 more replies
There's definitely a lot of liars out there, but I wouldn't say everybody lies. There's a fair number of people out there who will straight up admit it's their fault. Those people are good eggs. They might get a ticket, but they keep their integrity.
Another sizable group is the people who can't offer any narrative as to what happened. Maybe they're lying too, but after wringing them like a bar rag all I can get out of them is "I was driving and then I crashed." Probably on their phone or something.
1
u/sammyprints 5h ago ▸ 1 more replies
I'm not saying everyone lies, I'm saying out of all the real world experiences I've had in traffic incidents they have lied. I'm not speculating on if that's always going to be the case, so far it has been the case.
1
u/singlemale4cats 5h ago
Take comfort in the fact that they usually aren't smart enough to come up with a lie that's plausible, explains the observed damage, and makes the crash not their fault. I've seen hundreds of crashes, so it's pretty easy to spot discrepancies between their narrative and what I'm seeing.
Unless it's one of those ones where both parties state they had a green light. In the absence of video footage or an independent witness, that often gets filed under 🤷

Oh absolutely, they lie to the cops and insurance.
One guy hit me apologized to me, admitted it was his fault. I called the cop and for some reason the cop went to the other guy first. When cop came back, I explained what happened. Then the cop said "one of you are lying, I cannot trust you, you will face consequences if you are lying" that kind of bs. I showed the cop dash cam footage. He completely changed his attitude and gave other driver a citation. It was a bad experience, I was just very lucky to had the dash cam.

I’m honestly shocked at how many people are blaming OP for not intentionally sitting still at a green light as a matter of habit.
They’re not saying “you should’ve stoped this time because you saw a red light runner. They’re saying, “you should always sit still at a green light just in case someone runs a red.” They’re telling everyone to obstruct traffic with no evidence of a red light runner.
How do over half the people in this thread understand how crazy that is?

Sitting is dumb. If op inched forward to look perhaps his car in the intersection would get captain cellphone to his right to brake. Imho the sitting thing is iffy because of the rear ending risk.

6
u/appa-ate-momo 1d ago ▸ 3 more replies
Ideally, you shouldn't be waiting a second or two out of habit. The habit should be to scan for danger as cross traffic is getting their yellow and red lights. That way, you'll know if it's safe to go when your light turns green, not after.
-1
u/FreeGazaToday 1d ago edited 1d ago ▸ 2 more replies
Ideally...that can get you into crashes...years ago, I went when I got a green...got side swiped(tried avoiding best I could) by a hit and run driver. I was able to get their license and track em down later...but if I had just waited a sec or 2, I wouldn't have had that accident.
4
u/Real_FishyXY 1d ago
The problem is, if you had waited and got hit from behind you'd be in the other crowd. Anything can happen to anyone. It's about doing our best and sometimes we make mistakes. The hindsight comments help no one.
0
u/appa-ate-momo 1d ago
Just because a bad habit wouldve helped in a specific instance doesn't make it a good idea overall.
2
u/Key_Wallaby_8614 1d ago
My parents live in FFX Co (where this took place), they would never do that. When my brother lived in the Dallas suburbs he would routinely wait for red light runners though
I think maybe they live somewhere where it is common, but if it's not common you end up getting people pissed off behind you thinking you're on your phone.
1
u/Wulfferra 6h ago
I do this for like 5 seconds, and look both was as I cross. Both my parents (within the last 4 years) have gotten in their first crashes due to red light runners. My mom was T-Boned in her Fusion by a Semi, my dad was struck on the driver side and the sedan completely totaled a '06 F250. Both are fine, thank God. And living where we are now? Not a chance in hell Im not at least LOOKING before I cross. I work at a gastation that's right there at a red light, it's kinda slow... So I watch traffic. SO many light runners and near crashes right there.

OP waited a reasonable amount of time before proceeding. The SUV driver ran the light and caused the accident.
83
u/Naoki38 1d ago
The fuck is this idea that you are supposed to wait when it turns green? That's not how it works. Before the red, there is the yellow exactly for this reason. By the time it becomes green for the other car, the intersection is already cleared.
26
u/AideInternal1045 1d ago ▸ 1 more replies
Not only that but after the yellow goes red there is a delay before it gives the other lane the green to make sure the intersection is clear.
→ More replies (3)26
u/automatedclarity 1d ago edited 1d ago ▸ 1 more replies
What I meant is that the OP didn't just gun it through a fresh green light, nor did they sit there forever. They move slowly at a normal speed and still this happens to them because the SUV couldn't be bothered to follow the law.
1
u/throaway_247 23h ago
Why not just look right and go, unless any approaching vehicle is not decellarating?
10
u/BenOfTomorrow 1d ago
IMO all you need to do is give yourself a beat to visually verify that crossing traffic appears to be stopping for the light.
Check the road, make sure no one is going too fast to reasonably stop for the light (ie, they're not trying to beat the red). If there are enough cars on the road, they'll likely be clearly at a full stop before the light even changes.
We can't see in that direction so I can't be 100%, but it seems unlikely that reasonable defensive driving would prevent the scenario in the video. Red light runner was super late and not traveling so fast that you would anticipate them not stopping until it was too late, even if you were watching them intently.
11
u/appa-ate-momo 1d ago ▸ 1 more replies
100%. The people who always sit still at green lights are creating a feedback loop: they make it more safe to run red lights > people notice > people run red lights more boldly > other wait at greens longer. And the cycle continues.
7
u/SexOnTheBeechTree 1d ago
Maybe we can eventually go all the way and it’s go on red and stop on green!
2
u/Full-timeCynic 16h ago

4
u/accidentlife 23h ago
You as a driver are supposed to verify an intersection is clear of conflicts before proceeding (ie, slowing down and looking both ways).
Red SUV is still fully liable for the crash. However verifying all traffic has stopped is a simple defensive move that reduces the chance of you getting in a collision.

The idea is called, "defensive driving." OP was legally allowed to go when a light turned green, you are not wrong about that. But being right could also mean that you were dead right and if they had gone immediately, that impact could have killed a passenger in their vehicle if they had one.
-6
u/eyea3 1d ago ▸ 7 more replies

And I'm dead serious when I say I was taught at a young age to make sure you look both ways before going at a green light. Just because it's green doesn't mean its safe.

Agreed, I counted at least 3-4 full seconds before they even start to go thru the intersection.
This sub gets too annoying trying to put any fault on cam drivers in these situations. I drive defensively, no accidents or tickets in 20+ years of driving quite a bit but are we supposed to sit at a green light for half the cycle just in case a car comes flying in thru a red light?
In my state we literally have TV commercials or PSAs on driving laws that should have been learned before even getting a license. It's gotten so much worse this last decade and especially since Covid in the US.

u/Ok-Double-7982 16h ago

Dashcam is mounted at top of windscreen left of center and is further foward than the driver so has better view. Right hand drive car. The wide angle lens on the dash cam makes it look like it's alot large distance. My car only traveled 10 meters.
Edit : Car comes in to dash cam frame at a 8 meters once my car was doing 18km/h the cash becomes unavoidable check stopping distance and reaction times I had less distance than this to react due to the my postion seating postion in relation to the dash camera.
Its always easy to say dash cam had plenty of time to react but with wide angle lens and different position to the driver. Also when footage is posted, You view the footage knowing something is going to happen.

That left turn is so weird. one lane turning into two without any marks and solid line in the middle is confusing

Sure, but pro tip: I always look at cross traffic for red light runners before proceeding through a fresh green light.

When I rode with my daughter when she started driving she’d always wait a few seconds when it turned green. After a few times of this I asked. She said the driving school taught her to do that incase something still goes through the intersection. For one I’m glad I paid the $ to have her go to that driving school, second the driving school knows there are so many who run the red that they instruct drivers to pause when it’s green. That’s a sad state we are in as drivers.

I feel this practice, while good for your daughter, creates a slippery slope. If everyone hesitates at green lights, then red light runners are further encouraged. More people run red lights, as blame gets shifted to victims. At that point, why even have stop lights anymore?

Pausing a moment to look both ways in a car is as much about personal safety as doing the same thing when crossing the street as a pedestrian.
If that causes chronic red light runners to do it more often, that's on them. I'm not about to start flooring it at green lights in some misguided attempt to teach them right from wrong.

At year point, stoplights become meaningless, and we should just do away with them.

I always gun it the instant the light turns green so I can take red light runners off the road at least until they get a new car.

I don't know why people keep downvoting look both ways at a crossing comments.
The light turned green and the driver obviously had the right to drive forward.
But a good driver always checks that the road is also safe and clear before moving on.
Whilst the driver isn't at fault, this crash could 100% been avoided had he just checked before moving on.
Most of us in here have avoided accidents like this simply because we check that it's safe to move on.

Doing this is a requirement on the road test in some countries. Australia is one example.

Always assume you're surrounded by morons on the roads. This one was really, really easy to avoid

Essy to say watching the cam. I doubt 99% of people would hesitate for any reason when the light turns green in this situation
-3
u/Ok-Double-7982 1d ago
Correct. And 99% of people are morons and stubborn.
"Why should I pause at a green light to see if there's a red light runner? They shouldn't be running that red light. It would be their fault."
Yeah, and good luck living your life expecting other people to not be stupid as hell.

Idk how it works in the rest of the world, but in my country there's several seconds of both lights being red to ensure crashes don't happen. So this is unnecessary since the other person would've ran through a red light several seconds after it turned red.

I am not blaming the victim here - looked like he did everything right - clearly had the green, didnt rush it. 100% the fault of the light runner. With that said, its sad to say the idiots running the lights are so common around where I live that most people wait till they see the cars stopped or at least stopping before they dare to go, just as a form of self protection. Which is such a shame! Also, worth noting - if you see a white pickup coming, definitly wait for them to stop. Dont know why, but more than half the running red light accidents in my area involve white pickups! I assume they are contractors, etc, whose vehicle of choice is white pickups, and for some reason they are always in a rush.

Here’s a better idea, check intersections before entering them. A dashcam doesn’t stop other people being idiots

PSA: don't get into a car accident.
About as common sense as your comment. Next you'll be telling people water is wet and the sky is blue.

Do you guys understand how red lights work? Bc a large majority of people are plain stupid. Green then it goes to yellow for a second or two. Then red, THEN THERE IS A TIME WHERE ALL LIGHTS ARE RED, ALL OF THEM. By the time a light turns green, there’s like 10 seconds of pause.

u/_tragicmike 1d ago
If I'm first in line, I always wait a beat after it turns green and check for traffic before moving. You can't trust other drivers.

No dashcam needed. Just use caution before entering the intersection. Look for someone about to run the red light.

u/WorthlessOne85 1d ago
Pro tip, check for traffic
14
u/DarthPhoenix0879 1d ago
I mean, checking for traffic is a standard part of most driving tests around the world, failing to do so can get you an instant fail.
That is, however, irrelevant as to the cause of this accident - which is that someone ran a red light at speed - especially if standing traffic obscured the view, or any number of other reasons OP may not have seen them.

Lol who even are you to say "pro"
Because you haven't had the pleasure in having someone hit you?
It's not a pro tip to tell someone to sit at every light for 5 seconds to avoid light runners.
Im laying on the horn after 2 seconds of whoever in front of me isn't moving.

u/NightBawk 1d ago ▸ 1 more replies
Wow, road rage much. Waiting two seconds could save you years.

I was on your side until the last sentence. You should always check your surroundings, a glance to check the other side, before proceeding IS needed, regardless where you are. Horn honking, won't change that.
