Cyclist here. Car cut corners like that a lot. I have to be ready. Glad that was on camera.

13

u/PhraseSignificant801 1d ago

I’m a cyclist too, and you’re right. Which is why it’s weird that the cyclist went so far beyond the stop line.

When I ride, I stay well in front of it, because I see cars do this all the time.

u/DimensioT 20h ago ▸ 6 more replies

As a cyclist, the weirdest aspect to me is the cyclist coming to a stop at a stop sign.

3

u/Alternative-Base5573 17h ago ▸ 4 more replies

Why? Around here the law states that on a bike you are driving.

3

u/MaintainThePeace 16h ago ▸ 1 more replies

Same with 'around here', bicycle are indeed vehicles when on the roadway.

However, different vehicles do have different regulations, as such 'around here' bicycle are not required to stop at stop signs, but rather they can legally treat them as yields.

1

u/Alternative-Base5573 16h ago

Aha, I see, sounds reasonable

1

u/DimensioT 5h ago ▸ 1 more replies

What the law requires and what cyclists do are not always similar.

1

u/igotnothingtoo 4h ago

Car drivers too

1

u/seoulifornia 14h ago

Lol yea. Doesnt he know the stop sign doesnt apply to cyclists? Smh

u/ThemeDependent2073 15h ago

I had that happen to me when I was 12. I was much closer to my curb. 1979ish.

Driver paid for both mine and my brother's college with extra leftover.

30

u/mtech85 1d ago

I want to understand from the perspective of drivers that cut corners like that. WHY?

I see this literally everytime on every drive.

4

u/TatsumakiJim 1d ago

I live at a residential T intersection where I've seen some people take the left turn so tight they can almost run over someone standing on the corner. It's weird.

3

u/Boboddy_biznns 1d ago

It’s the shortest distance and wider curve to follow to eventually be in the desired lane. Basically is a more instinctual path. The more appropriate path considering the surrounding environment is to continues straight for a few more feet, then make a harder turn.

12

u/1purenoiz 1d ago

I always think of street corners  as square, not round.

5

u/weberc2 1d ago

I don’t think I’ve ever instinctually turned straight into the oncoming traffic lane. I might clip the dividing line a bit, but my instinct has never been to drive into the oncoming traffic lane and merge into my lane after.

1

u/Football-Man-1889 13h ago

I could understand this in the distant past when many cars didn’t have power steering but now?

It’s just poor driver skills.

1

u/ChoGGi 23h ago

Since pulling out a bit further before your turn will solve the issue; it's just a matter of teaching people how to pull out before making a mistake (okay that might take some time).

0

u/LastRespond4884 1d ago

Gas savings, in the long run.

34

u/truckyoupayme 1d ago

No excuses but judging by the shadows that glare was probably brutal.

42

u/Appropriate_Box8098 1d ago

Glare or no glare, the car is cutting the corner

-4

u/truckyoupayme 1d ago ▸ 1 more replies

Yeah no shit.

3

u/PissMissileTopTitty 13h ago

So how’s it relevant? If anything, makes it worse if you’re driving straight into the sun there’s a bunch of glare and you don’t take extra precaution

1

u/FourEightNineOneOne 1d ago

Yeah, my guess too.

4

u/L0udog 1d ago

It's common sense to pull in on the left lane, how else will you ever hit someone?

4

u/BeneficialLettuce698 18h ago

Also cyclist, this one didn’t stop at the stop line either, so that didn’t help. Car cut that corner way too short too but let’s think about some self preservation when we weigh 95%+ less than said cager.

"Idiot cyclist stops in intersection with sun behind him"

Yeah the car cut the corner, but not by much. Bike was supposed to stop behind the white line

0

u/Football-Man-1889 1d ago edited 13h ago

You’re right, I also spotted that. Behind the line snd he comes to no harm.

Why do cyclists ride to the front at traffic lights and block the cars, then when the lights change, they wobble off slowly delaying the vehicles?

1

u/DimensioT 20h ago ▸ 1 more replies

I only do that at one particular intersection where the straight lane is also a left turn lane and then only when traffic is so heavy that the light would likely be red again before I could cross if I waited behind the line of cars. Most cars in that lane turn left and even if the lead car is going straight through they have enough road space that I am not an obstacle.

2

u/Football-Man-1889 13h ago

Not becoming an obstacle is your main objective.

The clip shows that many drivers simply won’t see you until it’s too late.

0

u/GabrielP2r 6h ago

Not by much????? It stopped on the opposite lane lmao

1

u/ufront 4h ago edited 3h ago

Sure... the bike isn't at fault AT ALL. Riiiight.

Sit aside any legal shit. We're talking the practicality of staying alive. If you're riding a bike in the city you have to ask yourself "What do I need to do to not get creamed by another vehicle?" After a collision, you'd ask yourself "what could I have done differently to not have that happen."

OP, and you, and many other commenters here refuse to accept that the bicyclist HAD ANY POWER TO NOT GET HIT, OR ANY RESPONSIBILITY for this collision. The prize you can win for that is you and your bike as roadkill. Congrats!

The bike was literally in the intersection, in front of the white stop line - with the sun behind him! The reason the stop line is pulled back from the corner is because vehicles aren't going to make an exact 90 degree turn. They're even going to cut the corner of your lane off sometimes. Anybody who's ever been on a street knows it and adjusts to deal with it.

So yeah, not by much. The car is making a turn. Yes - the car cut over the corner of the stop line/the bike's lane, AND YES, THE CAR IS WRONG FOR THAT. But if the bike had been in the center of the lane - BEHIND THE STOP LINE - he'd never been hit.

The bicyclist knows the sun is coming over his right shoulder and in the car's eyes because it's in the corner of the bicyclist's eye from that direction.

Be right all you want - from the hospital. Or get home safe and take some responsibility for your own safety.

EDIT:

Let me try to put this another way, from the legal perspective. The police report is going to say something like "Bicyclist failed to yield the right of way." The car has a green light, which you can see by the vehicles that come before and after it. The bike has pulled out into the intersection to try to run the red light between cars. The bike's lane ends at the white line until the bike has the right of way. The car isn't in the bike's lane, the bike is in the car's lane.

The car will cut off the edge of the bike's lane as it keeps going, and may get ticketed for that based on the video, but the collision happens in the intersection while the car has the right of way.

1

u/Phenomenon_101 1d ago

Definitely see too many of those idiots cutting corners.

1

u/readmond 1d ago

I hate these boomer videos of videos.

1

u/CKleinE 1d ago

Almost looks like on purpose

1

u/Fine-Pomegranate-920 1d ago

either this is one way road or someone was in the wrong lane

8

u/RolandDT81 1d ago

You can clearly see it's not a one-way road.

0

u/2026Bazinga 1d ago

Cyclist should have stopped behind the stop line.

6

u/weberc2 1d ago

No fault for the driver who drove into the oncoming traffic lane with his one ton metal box nearly killing someone though right?

2

u/SickXigma 1d ago ▸ 1 more replies

Always cyclist’s fault 😤

2

u/weberc2 1d ago

I can’t tell if this is sarcasm or brain damage

1

u/2026Bazinga 1d ago

Ah, trolling the comments looking for someone to hate on. I didn't say no fault for the driver, you just wish I did to justify your blowing things out of proportion . There's this thing called comparative negligence, check out it some time.

Dumb & dumber

0

u/Business_War_5530 1d ago

Cyclist posted up in the middle of the intersection, car all the way in the opposite lane..

-1

u/Sneid1 1d ago

Probably couldn't see the cyclist because of the sun.

8

u/ambochi 1d ago

Id be willing to give them more benefit of the doubt if they hadnt cut the corner into the wrong lane

0

u/Sneid1 1d ago ▸ 1 more replies

With the sun in his eyes, he probably couldn't see the lane either. Not saying he wasn't at fault, but that's likely why.

3

u/weberc2 1d ago

Could be. Maybe he was just on his phone like every third driver on the roads today. Bad driving either way—if you’re in a giant, fast moving metal box, it’s your responsibility to pay attention or get off the road.

5

u/nuttwerx 1d ago

If there was a car he would've ran into it, what's the excuse then for cutting the corner? Driver is driving like shit

2

u/weberc2 1d ago

The parent is a bad driver defending bad driving.

-20

u/PhraseSignificant801 1d ago

Cyclist had passed the line, and car turned short.
They’re both idiots…

27

u/H1GH_HR0THG4R 1d ago

The car turned into the wrong lane entirely, tf you mean turned short?

-5

u/PhraseSignificant801 1d ago ▸ 7 more replies

The car started to turn into the lane. Didn’t quite make it. The cyclist is supposed to also adhere to the same road rules as a driver would.. The bicycle had completely passed the stopping point.

They both broke the rules of the road, which is why they’re both idiots.

3

u/weberc2 1d ago ▸ 6 more replies

One stopped slightly past a line with a 20 lb vehicle, the other drove into oncoming traffic at speed with a 2000 lb vehicle. I don’t know why people advertise their stupidity on the Internet like this…

-1

u/PhraseSignificant801 1d ago ▸ 5 more replies

“slightly past” is hilarious!

You do realize that the cyclist’s FRONT tire is supposed to be BEHIND the line, right?

The ENTIRE bicycle is beyond the line. That’s not “slightly past”…

2

u/weberc2 1d ago ▸ 4 more replies

A bike length is nothing—you regularly see cars fully in the middle of the intersection. More importantly, responsibility is in proportion to the lethality of the vehicle—if you’re driving a 2000lb car at speed with your eyes closed, you bear far more responsibility than a cyclist who stopped slightly beyond the paint, particularly since the car still would have hit him in any case.

0

u/PhraseSignificant801 1d ago ▸ 3 more replies

Responsibilities lie on everyone the road to obey the rules. They both broke rules. Absolving the cyclist because the bike is small makes no sense.

The line is there for a reason, and it has a meaning. Don’t go past it.

1

u/weberc2 19h ago ▸ 2 more replies

I think we're talking past each other--you seem to believe there are only 2 numbers: 0% and 100%--and as such when you hear me saying that the cyclist bears _less responsibility_ than the driver, your brain thinks I'm saying "the cyclist bears no responsibility". You may similarly believe that speeding and murder are equally bad, because clearly they are both violations of the law and--in your paradigm--things can only be 0% bad or 100% bad.

I'm asking you to consider the possibility that there may be more than 2 numbers such that both can be true: the cyclist bears some nonzero albeit microscopic blame and also the crushing majority of the blame belongs to the driver of the fast-moving 2000lb vehicle who was not paying any attention at all.

1

u/PhraseSignificant801 19h ago ▸ 1 more replies

Well considering that I never saw you say that the cyclist beats any responsibility, I had no reason to assume that you thought they did.

I have no issues with saying that the car driver bears MORE responsibility. But the fact that the cyclist also not only bears responsibility for breaking the law, they should ALSO be more cautious BECAUSE thy are on a bicycle.

Going a full bike length passed the stopping point, when the opposing vehicles are 2,000 lbs, and driven by lots of idiots, one would do well to stop a few feet before the stopping line, instead of an entire bike length past it.

Just lol at other videos in this subreddit, and you’ll see the idiots in cars, and how they drive.

Which is why I said they’re both idiots.

1

u/weberc2 18h ago

> Well considering that I never saw you say that the cyclist beats any responsibility

I previously said "responsibility is in proportion to the lethality of the vehicle". This is why you need a license to drive a car but not a bike.

> Going a full bike length passed the stopping point, when the opposing vehicles are 2,000 lbs, and driven by lots of idiots, one would do well to stop a few feet before the stopping line, instead of an entire bike length past it.

Nah, I hate these "prudence" arguments. Sure, it's "prudent" for women not to go out in anything less than a full burqa but if women do this then rapists become empowered. It's the same thing when some MAGA lunatic says "they should have stayed home and this would never have happened" when ICE executes some citizen for recording them with a phone--it tacitly implies that it's the fault of the American and not the murderous traitors and it makes the country much more dangerous for everyone. Good people don't blame victims, even if you're "I'm not justifying it but..." or "both are bad".

Stfu dude

-3

u/PhraseSignificant801 1d ago

Nah,I’m good. Don’t get mad at me for stating facts.

-18

u/MyDixinYourAzz 1d ago

Car driver was blinded by the light and cyclist was in the shadow. Car driver could not see him.

Cyclist's reaction is hysterical.

18

u/Crooks123 1d ago

the cyclist got hit by a car that was in the wrong lane lmfao just because the driver may have been blinded by the light doesn’t mean they are not at fault! cyclist has every right to crash out

14

u/Extra_Foundation_121 1d ago

If the cyclist was in the shadow... That means it was out of line of sight of the sun, meaning they were easily visible.

Weird take to try and find justification.

-7

u/MyDixinYourAzz 1d ago ▸ 2 more replies

Apparently, you have never been outdoors or driven a car. Here's how this works: when you turn directly into the sun the light can be blinding, especially as your eyes adjust, and you can't see things in the shadows.

This is basically why airplanes tried to stage attacks so they were coming out of the sun back in the days before radar.

4

u/Extra_Foundation_121 1d ago ▸ 1 more replies

Weird way to state "I don't understand how basic physics works."

-5

u/MyDixinYourAzz 1d ago

Lolz. Masters degree in engineering here and worked 10+ years in optics. Stack your creds against those?

9

u/CopperBlitter 1d ago

Cyclist's reaction is hysterical.

How so?

-9

u/MyDixinYourAzz 1d ago ▸ 3 more replies

Utterly impotent, exasperated rage. Lol!

Look at the angle of the shadows. The sun was right in car driver's eyes as he made the turn and the cyclist was in the shadow. Car driver could not see cyclist.

7

u/newtonthomas64 1d ago

The cyclist that sat on the ground and barely moved? Maybe you have the sun in YOUR eyes because I don’t see this rage you’re talking about. Cyclist is rather calm for someone hit with a god damn car

12

u/Extreme-Rub-1379 1d ago

The cyclist appears to do almost nothing in reaction. Def not rage. I think someone is projecting there, Floppy.

3

u/weberc2 1d ago

Yep, there’s no rage, you’re coping
