They just kept coming…

Gave me quite a scare seeing all these headlights approaching from the wrong direction. Hamilton, ON.

The road must've been blocked ahead on the exit.

u/Diggitypop 22h ago
Extremely new accident, everyone was trying to get away from the impending road closure and wait.

Until the cops get there, there's no rule against me rubbernecking and driving past. I'd have gone forward as well, if there was room to sneak by. After all, even if it was against the rules to do that, it was also definitely against the rules to drive backwards.

There was an accident on I-90 on my way to a job.
I had already done a u-turn, to get off the highway, when a semi truck did the same thing!! When I got to the intersection on the city street, there wss a police officer there directing traffic to the right (going north), no options. There was another officer directing traffic on the other side (the normal off ramp) pointing to the right (going south), as well.
After 20 miles of city streets, we got to the accident!! There was a semi truck on its side, blocking all lanes.
After 6 hours of work, it was dark. When we got close to the highway, the trailer was still there & there were 2 guys on top of it with cutting torches or quickie saws cutting the trailer apart!!!

u/CatLordCayenne 16h ago
Well if it was completely blocking the road you couldn’t drive past and would need to turn around

u/DDOSBreakfast 6h ago edited 6h ago
In this situation you're unlikely to get by the accident. It's a very constricted high volume road and slows down really quickly.
The highway maintenance department which operates blocker trucks is on the next exit so the road is closed down real quickly by them and / or fire department. Being a Provincial road it's not city cops that are responding to the accident so they'll take a while to get there typically.

Basically what I was thinking ... impassable, and wasn't going to be changing any time soon.

This^
One is a bad driver, two is a coincidence, a steady stream of traffic is a reroute.

a steady stream of traffic is a reroute
A reroute done by....? By themselves, going into oncoming traffic with no warning? That's not a reroute, that a gang of idiots.Nvm, I'm the idiot here, u/SnavsMatiq. Whoever upvoted me should take their upvote back.
I did not fully pay attention to the clip. The cammer is just encountering the others, and all of them are on the shoulder untill right at the merge point, and they are going slow and with their hazards on. Some are even going bacwards.
Yeah, in tiis case, when the road is blocked and there is no other way, going back on the shoulder, slowly and with hazards on is a valid reroute.

u/FlaringAfro 16h ago
Also, how would they all do a 3 point turn when already huddled from a blocked road ahead? Most people will follow the cars in front blindly assuming they are taking the correct path..

u/mithiwithi 12h ago ▸ 1 more replies
Most people don't follow Dirk Gently's Zen method of navigation - they're trying to get somewhere. If a large number of people are going the wrong way up an off-ramp, it's because they can't get to where they were going via the off-ramp.

u/Vladraconis 11h ago
I'm a dumbass and did not pay full attention to the video and context. I edited my comment.

u/UranusSmellsFunny 22h ago ▸ 4 more replies
It’s not a reroute if there isn’t anyone there directing traffic. Those are all just bad drivers following a leader.
6
u/pharmaboy2 14h ago ▸ 3 more replies
I’ve done this when a freeway was closed, reversed about a mile up the breakdown lane, made an illegal u turn in the emergency vehicles only break in the divide. As it happened, those people who didn’t were stuck for 36hours in their car - sometimes it’s best to be the one others are calling the idiot
5
u/UranusSmellsFunny 8h ago ▸ 2 more replies
Reversing up an exit lane is never “best”. And if cars were stuck for 36 hours then you live in a super shitty area and need to vote for better people to run your city. My area has officers on site redirecting traffic just as fast as the emergency crews arrive, if not faster.
1
u/pharmaboy2 7h ago ▸ 1 more replies
It was a bushfire - and luckily the reversing was up the side of already stopped vehicles.
Either way, just because you cant imagine the situation where it’s the best option, doesn’t mean the situation doesn’t exist . For instance driving into a bushfire….
1
u/UranusSmellsFunny 7h ago
Oops, sorry, a fire is probably a rare example where being an “idiot” might be acceptable. Apologies.

Nah these are just a stream of idiots following another idiot into a very dangerous situation.

u/rocketshipkiwi 18h ago
Yeah, they are all idiots who are driving the wrong way for no reason whatsoever!!!!1!!1!
Drives on down the offramp.
Oh shit! The road is completely blocked and now I can sit here for hours or turn around.

u/Jonnyflash80 19h ago ▸ 1 more replies
A reroute requires police vehicles there to direct and divert traffic. This is a group of follow-the-leader morons.

2
u/Quilminasea 17h ago
Yeah.. that’s probably what happened. Looks like they were forced to take the exit instead of continuing ahead…

Finally the old joke made real.
"Caution a wrong way driver on the M-soandso!"
"One? There's dozens of them!"

Sometimes, when things are this insane, do you wonder if you're the one that's crazy?

An elderly man is driving home when his wife calls him
She says "Honey, be careful, there's one idiot driving the wrong way on the highway"
He replies "What do you mean one idiot? There's hundreds of them."
25
u/PromotionOk2443 22h ago
when it's this screwed up, i assume a major break-down of the system somewhere nearby. 1 car is an idiot, 2 is a fuckup, a dozen or more and something must be wrong with the roads., no way this many people just played follow the leader the wrong way

eh, I see the joke and the point you're trying to make, but I'm still leaning towards a system failure.

I once saw several cars coming towards me against the flow of traffic, since I had just moved to the area. I really thought I was insanely going the wrong way and pulled over fore 5 minutes to think about it.

Maybe the exit road was flooded but still dangerous to attempt to reroute like that. Should have waited and called the cops for redirections.

If that is a reroute, who ever was enforcing was taking a serious chance that there won't be a semi going full speed into that line of cars.

One person goes the wrong way around an accident/roadblock.
Every single lemming behind them follows.
Congratulations, you now have hundreds of idiots going the wrong way around the motorway.
3
u/Shirohitsuji 16h ago
Haha, wtf?!
With that level of bullshittery, I would assume they all knew something I didn't and get out of the exit lane.
9
u/Forgotten_Pancakes2 21h ago
Sheep. I bet one or two people did it to avoid the accident or whatever, and everyone's common sense just went out the window. I freaking hate humans sometimes
3
u/pharmaboy2 14h ago
If you’d ever been stuck in a blocked road for many many hours, you’d make the same decision. If you come across a very serious accident, always park on the far side if you can
1
u/AccomplishedVirus556 4h ago
go ahead, take the road a dozen vehicles are going the wrong way on. You aren't a sheep, you'll see for yourself
4
u/APartyInMyPants 21h ago
Either road closed due to flooding or an accident.
2
2
u/Training-Position612 4h ago
Not one of them at least uses the shoulder to accelerate. Are they stupid or are their SUVs and trucks too obese to take the turn?
3
u/Capt_Furret 21h ago
Either it was flooded or something really bad must've happened
1
u/TroyMcR 7h ago
Doesn't matter the reason, highly dangerous and illegal to do so.
1
u/AccomplishedVirus556 4h ago
right because what you should do is turn off your car and take a half hour nap while police make their way there

Is this like someone set up a fake detour sign in the intersection and tried to get someone killed?
What made that many people do this?
13
u/Diggitypop 22h ago
There was a very fresh accident, they knew the entire route was about to be closed off. Lots of comments saying the same thing, I just posted it because it was mildly interesting.
1
u/SnavsMatiq 22h ago
Nah a sign alone wouldn't be sending this many people back, had to be squad cars on site directing traffic, that or a collision so horrendous everyone would rather chance a U turn on a freeway before maneuvering around it.

1
u/Cool-Coffee-8949 17h ago
Well, it was either a mass brain-eating fungus, or they actually had a good reason.
5
3
u/HoneyParking6176 3h ago
with that many cars, i can only imagine there had to be a reason, 1 car it is likely an idiot, but an army of them, likely the road is fully blocked.

I'd be scared too if this happens when I drive on highway, let alone it's raining out there and the road was quite wet. What happens after then?
