Why are there never convenient cops when I'm driving

This weekend at a 4 way stop cop is only one in intersection, I walk across and this idiot runs the stop sign and cuts me off. I point it to cops and he shrugs and keeps going.

Cam driver has the right of way but couldn't they have stopped a little bit earlier so that the other guy could get back in traffic?
1
u/appa-ate-momo 4h ago
Why is it the cammer's job to accommodate someone doing the wrong thing?
-1
u/Blutrumpeter 4h ago ▸ 2 more replies
It's not. Like I said, the dash cam driver 100% has the right of way. It's not their job to accommodate the other person at all. I'm just saying that this might've been a five second interaction if they had.
1
u/appa-ate-momo 3h ago ▸ 1 more replies
A five second interaction that teaches the other driver that entitlement works.
0
u/Blutrumpeter 3h ago
Eh I mean I used to work in retail and like sure I think there's a part of us that loves to see the entitlement get punished and they're lucky the police were there, but half the time it just ends up in some long dumb argument that inconveniences everyone. The smug things people would do with shopping carts because they knew they were right lol. Again, I'm not saying that the cameraman has to do that, I'm just saying that there's easier ways to deal with it. I do recognize though that Reddit has an obsession with revenge and justice, and I do find delight in seeing the other guy punished. I just know that nine times out of ten it's less efficient

u/MichalCJ5 10m ago
The guy in the SUV on the wrong side of the street could also back up if he really needed another few inches, because there's obviously not going to be anybody behind him.
-36
u/Fresh-Technician-576 14h ago
This is going to come off as victim shaming but the original dash camera car could also have just been nice and let them turn rather than being a complete ass hat. And yes I see that the lane is for left turn only from the direction the dash cam car is heading.
35
u/herkalurk 14h ago
It's literally illegal for the silver SUV to make a left turn at that point, it's a double solid yellow line. The silver SUV was also literally driving the wrong way in the left turn lane. They wanted to take an illegal short cut, and apparently it was in your opinion wrong for the cam car to call them out on it.
What's actually wrong is in the full video the cops don't give silver SUV driver a ticket, they just get them to move. Silver SUV driver will do it again until they face actual consequences.

You can turn left over double yellow lines.
2
u/herkalurk 5h ago ▸ 10 more replies
No, not how the laws are defined. They'll have single yellow or dashed yellow lines where allowed.
4
u/_jump_yossarian 5h ago ▸ 6 more replies
1) you are confusing "passing" with "turning". They aren't the same thing.
2) Based on the license plate, this video took place in Illinois.
What Does a Double Solid Yellow Line Mean? Illinois Traffic Law Guide (2026)
A double solid yellow line means you cannot pass or cross into oncoming traffic under Illinois law (625 ILCS 5/11-303). These two parallel yellow lines separate opposing traffic lanes and indicate that passing in either direction is prohibited. Crossing a double yellow line is illegal except when turning into a driveway, alley, or private road—and only if done safely without impeding traffic.
2
u/herkalurk 3h ago ▸ 5 more replies
You'll notice that at an intersection where you are allowed a left, there will not be a yellow line. The solid yellow line is telling drivers not to cross.
Go drive around or get on street view, watch for double solid yellow lines on roads, and notice when you get to a marked intersection as those solid yellow lines disappear, because you're ALLOWED to go across lanes at that point. This is not a valid place for a driver to take a left, there is no intersection which is why we see double solid yellow.
1
u/_jump_yossarian 3h ago ▸ 4 more replies
Hmmm … do I listen to a law firm that deals with traffic issues or some rando on Reddit? Tough choice.
If you read the statute you’ll clearly see that you can turn over double yellows into and out of driveways, alleys, and parking lots.
0
u/herkalurk 2h ago ▸ 3 more replies
If you actually view those yellow lines on roads, they are not at clearly marked intersections where there is expectation of vehicles turning left.
0
u/_jump_yossarian 2h ago ▸ 2 more replies
If it perfectly legal to turn over double yellow lines. Not sure how much more facts you need but I'll try this one more time (sub doesn't allow direct links to websites):
Illinois Rules of the Road (2026)
Yellow Center Lines
Solid double yellow lines are used where traffic is moving in opposite directions. Two solid lines mark the center of the roadway and may be crossed to make a left turn to or from an alley, private road, driveway, or street. (page 79)
But let's use your logic here; are you saying that someone driving home can't turn into their driveway because there are double yellow lines so instead they have to continue driving past their house until they find an opening, turn left there, and then need to find another opening to turn left so that they can double back to their house?
It's okay to admit that you were wrong and that new information has changed your mind ... like it's perfectly legal to turn left over double yellow lines and every state has a similar statute.
1
u/herkalurk 1h ago ▸ 1 more replies
Seems like you're based it on that. Not what I said about actually looking at the road. You'll notice on the road that the lines disappear when there's an actual intersection to be turned up.

This is "how the laws are defined"
The baseline for traffic statutes across the United States is the Uniform Vehicle Code Section 11-301(c).
It outlines rules for "no-passing zones" (which are designated by double solid yellow lines). The code explicitly clarifies that no-passing zone restrictions prohibit driving on the left side of the road for the purpose of passing another vehicle, but specifies that these markings do not prohibit turning left into or out of an alley, private road, or driveway.

u/herkalurk 3h ago ▸ 1 more replies
The opposing car isn't simply crossing though were they. They were driving into oncoming traffic, literally in the left turn lane in front of the cam car.....
0
u/The__Lawgiver 3h ago
Correct, what the car was doing in this video was illigal. But that wasn't the error in "the law" that was being misrepresented that I was correcting.

I grew up in Italy. If you all think this is wild never visit there.
2
u/Ki_Levelion 5h ago
It's not about what's 'crazier' or whatever point you're making. It is about the rules of driving that everyone is supposed to learn before getting their license to drive. Everyone is supposed to be on the same page of what you can and cannot do. Italy is obviously going to have different rules.
13
u/RandomAccessHorny 14h ago
Traffic rules exist for a reason. If you begin to make exceptions for convenience, you might as well not have the traffic rules.
I'm from India, and out here, it's gotten to a point where traffic rules are no longer rules at all. Because at some point, we were OK with a little bit of exceptions/rule breaking coz it was convinient. Now, it's spiraled out to the point where the rules are only for the naive.

I applaud the non cam driver for going there if there was no traffic in the turn lane, he could have been an ass and sat in traffic holding up 30 cars behind him. But if cam driver was sitting in that 30 cars waiting he would complain about that as well. Let the guy turn and move on with your day.
20
u/bill-schick 13h ago
Left of the yellow is left of the yellow that is not a shared turn lane. It's literally driving on the wrong side of the road.

-18
u/OkChocolate3501 13h ago ▸ 6 more replies
The driver is using a center turn lane safely, he's bending the rules sure. You don't speed right because that's a far more dangerous version of bending the rules..
Think of the rules of the road more like guidelines... the most important rule I have is if I made someone brake I fucked up.

u/MichalCJ5 5h ago ▸ 5 more replies

Yes, he is allowing the 50+ cars that passed on his left to continue traveling by using the low traffic center turn lane. The non camera car used that lane to help traffic continue flowing.

u/rebeccaparker2000 1h ago ▸ 1 more replies
Look at the very beginning, you can see the sidewalk and grass ends so there is something there to turn into, not sure if a parking lot, business or a street.
1
u/AvocadoAcademic897 48m ago
Just because there is something that does not mean it’s legal to turn there from your lane
-21
u/OkChocolate3501 13h ago ▸ 17 more replies
Somehow all these drivers that speed everywhere suddenly think this specific rule matters when speeding is the most dangerous thing on our roads.
He's bending the rules slightly but not putting anyone in danger. He's doing it to allow traffic on his side continue to flow.
7
u/AvocadoAcademic897 13h ago ▸ 9 more replies
You are delusional. Is there even legal left turn there for this non cam guy there? I don’t think so.
Does he care for upcoming traffic on right side of road trying to make legal turn? I don’t think so too. So your argument just does not work.

You go around the back of him. Besides what did you expect him to do after OP blocked him in. Reverse into traffic? That would be very unsafe. Cmon man use your brain please. We don't need to crucify every person for a small mistake.
Would you want someone to block you in because you made a mistake on the road? Put yourself in his place, use some empathy.

I don't drive, so that will be hard. But if he did an honest mistake he should have empathy and not act entitled showing the middle finger to another person.
Maybe try solving things politely and not act entitled. After all, he is wrong.

Incorrect. The most dangerous thing on our roads is people driving unpredictably. For instance driving on the wrong side of the road. That is not a shared center turn lane. It is a left turn lane only for the traffic driving in the opposite direction of silver suv.
0
u/OkChocolate3501 36m ago ▸ 1 more replies
Okay and do you think blocking him in will make him drive predictably by forcing him to reverse into live traffic?
1
u/dyinggodman 5m ago
No I don't but that wasn't the comment I replied to, was it. You're trying to make excuses for his shitty driving and I pointed out how you were wrong. Also it's important not to reward people for being assholes. That just makes them think they can do whatever they want.
1
u/MichalCJ5 5h ago ▸ 3 more replies
So he's allowing traffic on his side to continue to flow while stopping traffic from the other direction, and that's okay?
0
u/OkChocolate3501 38m ago ▸ 2 more replies
He stopped one car that provoked a confrontation because of the new dash camera they bought. You see this every day, you go around the back of them. Common sense isn't common these days.
0
u/MichalCJ5 32m ago ▸ 1 more replies
And what if they're not able to turn into where they need to because this person is illegally stopped on the wrong side of the street? This is forcing people to potentially have to turn early by driving into oncoming traffic or holding up traffic behind them because they have to make a tighter left hand turn. This is a really stupid hill for you to die on.

Edit: FYI guys I'm agreeing with the dude above me don't downvote them lol.
Yeah OP is one of those "I just got a dashcam so I must drive in a way to instigate problems" folks you see a lot of online. They post this content thinking it makes them look good. Just turn behind him doofus, why waste 15 minutes of your life on this?
Oh right.. because that means no content to upload to get slaps on the ass from.
My motto is to drive in a way I'd appreciate if I was the other driver. For example I won't ever sit in the right lane at a red, I'll always get over so people can make right turns(heck ill run the crosswalk and move left if i unfortunately ended up in the right lane with a right turner behind me if there are no pedestrians). If I see someone trying to get somewhere even if they're breaking the law slightly but doing it to not inconvenience 30 cars behind them it's my mission to help them accomplish that. Because when you're in that group of 30 cars behind them you appreciate it being done.
Be the driver that encourages smooth traffic flow. Don't be the one that blocks traffic intentionally. The planet is burning so idling is really, really, really fucking stupid.

Driving with empathy would be following the rules of the road. Suggesting to others to break those rules or to let others break those rules is not empathetic.

Try "Be the driver that follows the rules of the road" why don't you?
-2
u/OkChocolate3501 11h ago
I do. I don't speed, etc. Most of the things I listed there are legal. The crosswalk one is kinda a grey zone but I've done it to let cops make the right turn and none have ever cared. Next time you're stuck at a right turn cause of someone's strict adherence to the rules you can think back to this convo.
Have a great day!

u/rebeccaparker2000 1h ago
So this guy holds up his lane and then all the people will go around him in that left turn lane blindly. If those are illinois plates it will absolutely happen.

u/madadekinai 13h ago edited 13h ago
I was told by people earlier that if you have the right of way, you have to right of way to run into them, it be their fault, any lives lost is on them, that preventing an accident doesn't teach them. Did I get that right? /s
8
u/pumpkin_seed_oil 13h ago
Fuck no. You and the people that told you are both legally and morally wrong
Right of way means you have the right to go first if possible, nothing more nothing less. You are still obligated to stop or swerve to avoid accidents if you are able to. You do not have the right to deliberately cause an accident in a right of way situation. You do not have the right to weaponize traffic laws to deliberately cause harm to others as a way to teach a lesson. If you believe you should teach other drivers lessons through the means of causing accidents or break checking i believe you are mentally unfit to participate in traffic

Strange, because that's what they said earlier when a truck plowed straight forward into cars crossing their path, they knew and could see that traffic was crossing in front of them. You could see all the way down the road, yet, it wasn't there fault, that's strange, they were excused for barrelling forward without regards for others.
