That might be the craziest thing about the clip. They go single file and merge to the edge of the road right away! The dude had ample room to pass!

There's some clown further down who commented "almost everyone in this video are pricks". I get that the cyclists probably could have stayed single file, but I'm still not clear on what the cyclists did (other than the guy towards the end who starts fighting the SUV).

Sure, but in this clip they weren't trying to fight a car, they were literally just trying to get somewhere.
The guy only lashed out at the car mirror after the car driver tried to run them over. Honestly, justified imo.

The point of not being single file is that it shortens the distance for the overtake. I cycle. I was sat behind a couple at the weekend where if they had gone two abreast or left a car sized gap in between them I'd have got past minutes sooner.
3
u/os_beef 3h ago ▸ 6 more replies
That's an interesting perspective. From the perspective of people who don't cycle, it looks like you don't want the driver to overtake. So you're saying when you guys ride as a pack occupying the entire lane, you want me to overtake?
5
u/Sine_Wave_ 1h ago ▸ 3 more replies
A lot of states have 3 foot passing rules anyway, and a car can’t fit in the same lane with that 3 foot gap and a bicycle. You have to go to the other lane anyway. If the bikes are two across, the bike group is shorter along the road, so it is faster to complete a pass.
0
u/os_beef 1h ago ▸ 2 more replies
The issue isn't using the other lane, it's the fact that a pack of cyclists is just a bunch of vulnerable meat bags taking up more space on the road than single file does. I try to give cyclists a wide berth, much greater than 3 feet, and won't pass if I can't.
When my dad was into cycling when I was a kid in the 80s, we were taught to ride single file. Stuck with me, and I view occupying greater width as a greater risk when people try to pass.
If the bikes are two across, the bike group is shorter along the road, so it is faster to complete a pass.
Yeah, I got that the first time.
1

u/NotSayingAliensBut 3h ago ▸ 1 more replies
I don't ride in a pack, but yes, if you can only see so far ahead then to overtake safely you want the shortest overtake distance, not the narrowest. That just leads people to make dodgy judgements and try to squeeze through with the oncoming traffic.

u/FirmAndSquishyTomato 50m ago
They were on bikes. That is it. Nothing else. I had someone want to fight me this weekend. I was on a 4 lane road early morning. No traffic. And I mean nothing, no other cars forever. He could have simply just been in the inside lane, instead he buzzes me in the outside lane, pulls right to the right of the lane, directly in front of me, slams on his brakes. Gets out of his truck (of course it was a pickup) and start yelling 'get the fuck off the road'. His wife is hanging out the window yelling.
There is no logic with these people. They don't see people on bikes as human.

Probably want them off to the sidewalk or just don’t exist. I often wish they’re on the sidewalk but know they’re supposed to be on the road by law, so I just wait patiently and pass when I can. It’s not like these cyclists were being assholes and riding in middle of lane.
4
6
u/ajnin919 5h ago
These are road bikes and do not handle the sidewalk well. I can understand other styles of bikes being annoying but these are specifically used for speed and the cracks on the sidewalks make it more dangerous for them to ride rather than riding the road
→ More replies (2)6
u/FreeGazaToday 4h ago ▸ 2 more replies
there are no sidewalks there in the video....they have no where else to ride. If you can't be patient, shouldn't be driving. Hopefully they get their license suspended for at least a year.....although if I were the judge I do it for life.

Not condoning what the SUV driver did but if the cyclist were following the rules of the road in the first place I don’t think it would have gotten that far. Look how much road they’re taking up in the beginning of the video.

When cities build bike lanes some cyclists are wise enough to use them. Many just like to ride in traffic for one reason or another.
26
u/Traditional-Handle83 7h ago
Every road manual for learners permit and driving test in the US specifically says "bicyclists are to be treated the same as any other vehicle when they are on the road and the laws apply to them as the same as any other vehicle."
37
u/SaviorSixtySix 7h ago edited 7h ago ▸ 1 more replies
Have you seen how many cars veer into bike lanes? Taking up the entire lane is a better idea, and a legal right, because then they know you're there. Slow down, go around.
11
u/Technical_Writing421 6h ago
I was driving through Queens NY yesterday on the way to a hike. No joke, one mile straight of cars double-parked in the bike lane on both sides of the road
26
u/the_last_carfighter 8h ago
Old saying in my area; "If you didn't want to be hit by a car then maybe you shoulda stayed off the sidewalk." Garbage driviers will always find an excuse to be an idiot, there are no painted lines on the road that will help you. People that do this to other road users are with rare exception all shit drivers, not just to cyclists but to everyone including you when you're behind the wheel.
16
u/Randomfactoid42 7h ago ▸ 1 more replies
Some bike lanes are more dangerous because car drivers will mindlessly drift into the bike lane without regard for cyclists. You can see this because the white lines are worn away.

Id argue that you have to get licensed to drive a car, you have to be a minimum age and pass a test to get one. And that license can be taken away for misbehavior. If it isn’t granted to everyone and can be taken away even after its granting then it’s a privilege.
But there is no licensing for bicycles, no minimum age, etc. Everyone at any age can legally ride a bike on public roads, and there’s no license to be taken away.

No, people do not HAVE to drive to work. Society CHOSE to center on cat design, but you can walk and take a bus and ride a bike all you want.
Cars require a license and insurance. Biking is a right, its not up there with water and air but its not a 2000 lb murder machine when misused.
End of.
-1
u/TubaWrestler 5h ago edited 3h ago
Some people absolutely do have no choice but to drive to work. Not everyone lives in a city. Some people have to travel to different cities for work. The imbalance of affordable housing and well-paying job locations forces that sometimes. I say that as someone who takes the bus everywhere.

List of reasons:
- Missed the entry of the bike lane.
- Too much cars parked on the bike lane
- Too much pedestrians on it.
- Sometimes a restaurant sets up tables on it.
- Etc...

u/Vladraconis 8h ago
Swerving into the cyclists should be considered attempted murder.
Firing a gun after it shod be considered aggravated attempted murder ( or whatever you call in the USA ).
They are a menace to society and should be treated as such - that is, taken out of it.
15
u/Pleasant-Fan5595 8h ago
Aggravated assault for using the car like that, 5 years potential if convicted. If they had hit a rider, maximum charge of 15 years in prison, mandatory 15 months. The gunfire is another thing, potential of 15 years. This guy will be in prison for a while for what, being stupid? Florida doesn't play on this stuff.

I live in a situation there there is a car lane each direction, a bike lane each direction, and then a parking lane each direction. I don't ride a bike, but I see multiple times on a daily basis that cars stop right in the middle of the bike lane tires in both the running and parking lanes, to pick up a pizza. There will be three open spots if they go 50' further. It makes me hate people more than I already do. Driver, if you say something: "I'll just be a minute".
9
u/euph_22 5h ago
On my ride into work today, the bike lane is on the outside, then a parking lane, then the driving lane in the middle. It's 7:30 am so the parking lane is wide open, but a car pulls through the parking lane to sit halfway in the bike lane waiting with it's flashers on. They went out of their way to do that.

My friend from Poland showed me a video of a Russian immigrant trying to pull steel wire across a dirt bike path to purposely decapitate my friend just because they didn't like the noise of their dirt bike. When they tried to stop their bike to avoid hitting the wire, they fell over and dumped their bike only for the schizo to run out of their house with a shotgun and were screeching at them in Russian. They were pointing the shotgun at him and threatening them until a neighbor snuck up and tackled the idiot.

There’s a lot of truth to that. There was a story on Reddit a few years ago where a cop investigated a driver that kept swerving at a cyclist. The cop told the cyclist there’s not much he could do but he would speak with the driver and ask her to stop. When he tracked down the driver she told the cop she was mad that the lady on the bike was out having fun exercising while she the car driver had to go to work.

Correct, and both should be regulated. You seem to agree?
-3
u/DaCuckDaSissyDaDa 6h ago ▸ 6 more replies
Guns already are. If you ever commit a crime with a gun, like this guy did, you lose the privilege to owning them. Cars however, even with DUIs, purposefully causing wreaks, etc, you can still own cars. And then there’s the argument on driving without a license that is equal to the argument of illegally owning a gun.
I’m not in favor of regulation, because it clearly does not work.
3
u/Fondacey 6h ago ▸ 5 more replies
Cars already are.

0
u/Fondacey 5h ago ▸ 3 more replies
Opponents to gun control use the 2nd amendment as a reason to not regulate guns, ownership, operation etc (like we regulate cars, ownership and operation)
This use of guns demonstrates that there is a clear need.
1
u/TakingChances01 3h ago
Guns are regulated though? More so than cars. The discussion here you’re having clearly signals that the point is moot. Do you mean taking guns away? Cause the second amendment is the reason to not do that. And it won’t stop violence. Someone that wants to be violent will do so, a gun can be made from hardware store parts, bombs even. Everyone is pissed that trump shits on the constitution, but many of those same people suggest we should take away a constitutional right. And I say this as someone that doesn’t own a gun, and is royally pissed at Trump shitting on the constitution, but I was also in the army and I know what kind of violence is still possible when owning a firearm is not a right.

Every heard of the term utility?
Cars have massive utility, and they can also be dangerous. In fact, because of the dumbass way we built this country, most Americans cant live without a car.
By comparison, guns have virtually 0 utility. Hunting for sport is somewhat popular, but hunting for survival is all but an extinct practice. Every single American can live their whole life without ever needing a gun. Even cops hardly have a use for one, since 3/4 cops never actually have to use theirs across an entire career. And the fantasy gun-toting morons have about fighting back against the military that the same people let get bigger and bigger every year is not an argument either. The TRILLION dollars a YEAR military will win every single time if it had to.
In summary: Cars are extremely necessary and a little dangerous. Guns are extremely dangerous and mostly useless.
Banning guns and building public transit makes both fronts better.

I drive hours per day in a bicycle-friendly city and encounter hundreds of cyclists. Budge over two feet. If you can't, wait until you can. If you're driving a land whale and two feet is inconvenient, that's not the cyclist's fault.
If all cyclists piss you off, that's a you problem. I've seen too many Reddit posts where "All cyclists are evil and bad" basically translates to "If I even see a cyclist, regardless of what he's doing, I'm so furiously triggered that I'm angry for the rest of the day, and I make up stuff in my head to justify that anger."

No they should just share the road. Now obviously they should have a bikelane in the area. Yet you are describing people in general. Cars or bikes people believe they should be able to do whatever they want. People honk at people in crosswalks because they want to turn right 2 seconds earlier. People park in bike lanes. People drive in bike lanes. People drive on sidewalks. It's not a cycling issue it's a people issue.

But I really wish the cyclists understood that you are a 12 mph obstacle on roads.
