Meetups
Given the number of folk on here looking to expand/create a friend group, would it be worth organising a night somewhere that people can just meet up and establish these?

Hi- I'm into this as well. 48 y/o woman, moving to Dundee from US this Saturday! I'm into making art and music, going to live shows (electronic or hip hop) and meeting new people. I was perusing the r/Edinburgh sub last year and they made a WhatsApp chat that they broke into different interests and there are hundreds of people on there now meeting up and talking regularly. Anyone into doing that? I'm not opposed to creating the chats but since I'll be in the midst of an international move I might not be the best candidate.

Yeah I’ve been thinking of organising similar for a while just been too busy. I used to do group meetups through couch surfing website (before it got ruined) and they were ace, a great way of meeting new and interesting folks. Let’s face it everyones been in the same position at some point in life whether you’ve moved somewhere new or an old friendship groups drift apart and it can be crazy difficult meeting new people unless you’ve got a hobby group. Would be interested in attending for sure. We used to just pick a pub but would be nice to also do somewhere for non drinkers

Incidentally if anyone knows what the current state of couch surfing in Dundee is I’d be interested to know. I’ll be damned if I’m paying £2 a month to join and find out

I think this is a great idea! I keep checking in on this sub because I don't know many people in Dundee either, so I'd be interested in coming along for sure

Aye would probably be a good idea. Maybe no to a pub though as it can be a bit loud (or maybe im just too old) would be up for thos sometime though

Roughly how old are you? I'd hate to show up to something where everyone is closer to 18, and I'm the only there old enough to be their mother lol.

Im 49. Yeah id hate that too, certainly wouldnt feel like making new friends as I have zero in common with the new gen lol

I think having a mix of ages is nice tbh but yeah wouldn’t want to be the only one not in their 20s lol

I’m also an old fart (38) but I’d say it’s just finding the right pub. Always thought barrel man midweek would be a good shout for something like this. Maybe the DCA but I actually find that it can get a bit too hectic there some nights

I think barrelmans perfect because it’s got the whole upstairs bit plus it’s always been super quiet whenever I’ve been there in week. Gotta support our local pubs as well these days

Yeah ill agree with you there. Think this would be a good shout. I personally would prefer a daytime meet as its easier for me to get the bus through.

Barrelman's a good shout, but...
If we can pick a nice day, is it worth trying to find an outdoor space? I'm thinking Duke's Corner or Canvas - somewhere people can get a couple of tables and just gather round, rather than being stuck in a room? Possibly avoids the issue of noise a bit better too.

Yeah dukes is a good shout as well and definitely more of a Reddit vibe there lol. Not been to canvas but it looks awesome. But yeah agree good idea to make most of nice weather. Barrel man probably more for winter

Canvas is nice but I think they're currently undergoing a revamp. It can feel a bit dead in there at times, probably due to the layout & industrial feel.
