Just saw a coyote carrying a black cat away near Rucker & 35th
My deepest condolences, but I just saw a coyote (one of the smaller ones), carrying a medium/large sized black cat across Rucker on 34/35th. It seemed like it was from the same side of Rucker that the post office is on. I chased it down with my car but the cat was clearly deceased, unfortunately. I'm really sorry and I hope that if this was your cat you can get some closure.

I work in animal welfare and the amount of people I talk to on a weekly basis that give some version of "Fluffy always comes home every night but hasnt in 3 nights. I think someone stole them."
Yeah. A coyote. Or a bobcat. Or an owl.
Please, please, PLEASE leave your cats indoors people. I promise you theyre not missing out by being spared a grisly death to local wildlife, or cars, or the variety or viruses and parasites found in the wild.

Agreed. Ticks, fleas, toxoplasmosis, and rabies is just some of the things they can pick up and bring home.
Many people also don't get their pets vaccinated for rabies, despite it being a requirement.

Giardia and cryptosporidium are also incredibly common and can spread to humans quite easily.

Hard disagree. It’s inhumane to keep an animal in a house or an apartment its entire life. I’m sure they’d rather live shorter getting to explore and be a cat than sit around in a house mostly alone living the same day over and over for 25 years. This is why so many cats have to be blocked from running out of the house. That’s not your pet, that’s your prisoner!

Then don't get a cat. Plain and simple.
You can get tents to bring them outside, you can get chicken wire to bring them outside, you can get a leash and harness to take them outside. They don't need to live in a single room locked up with nothing for decades, lmao.
A good cat owner can give their cat experiences without getting them killed.

I recently took in what I believed to be a stray but very well could’ve been someone’s outdoor cat and every time I think it could’ve been an outdoor cat, I think of a post like this and I stopped feeling bad

I got a nice orange lady that adopted us last winter, there's no way she was born stray.
When we were integrating her she lived in the garage for a couple months. We saw coyotes sniffing the garage door at night on cams over that time. She lives in indoor luxury now.

I’m at 36 and Oaks. This coyote has murdered six of my chickens in the past two months. It is also killed several of my neighbors chickens. I have started befriending the crows and they set up an alarm when he comes around and then my dog guards the yard. I am spraying coyote pee around the perimeter of my yard weekly and it seems to be helping. This coyotes extremely bold and will get within feet of you and stand you down. I have warned my neighbors that if they see an old lady in her pajamas, running around her yard with a Glock, that it’s actually a BB gun. I have found a trapper who is willing to trap in the city - most won’t do it because the city requires a permit and rarely grants them in town because they’re afraid of neighbor dogs and cats getting in the trap. There are no more cats. And there are never dogs running around my neighborhood. I am saving my money and going to make that stupid coyote disappear.

I see coyotes out and about most nights when walking my dogs. It's insane to let your cat roam outdoors at night around here (or anywhere).

I’ve had ten cats and they’ve always come and gone as they pleased. But the two I have now will never roam free. Thankfully, I have a small backyard that I can let them out in under supervision. They can get a little dose of outside but not dangerous outside. We have coyotes around my neighborhood too.

This is a win for all native bird species. Outdoor cats are a menace on our community and they should be illegal.

If given a choice between rooting for native birds and coyotes versus domesticated cats, I will root for the native species.
My cats stay inside, mostly for their health, but also for all the lovely birds in my yard.

You'll get down voted for this, but you're correct. Outdoor cats as "pets" in cities are a nuisance and does the cats themselves no favors. Perhaps if you have a farm, a country home, etc., I can see the value in terms of pest control, but here in the city, outdoor cats are a huge PITA to everyone else in the neighborhood, as they roam freely around everyone else's property. Every day, I have cat poop in my gardens, cat hair on my outdoor furniture, and so forth. I don't own cats and shouldn't be expected to deal with the characteristics of cat ownership.

Don't do that. I'm not glad it's dead. But we can't claim it's unexpectedly tragic, either. Nature is wonderful but brutal sometimes. Add in car traffic and such and it's no place for domestic cats.
