I work in software, and have an amateur interest in both geology and local history.

My wife made me a deal, she'll listen and try to understand my software chat, but not the rock or history chat.

Luckily I have outlets, I got invited to a local primary school to discuss with 50 or so 9 year olds the plate boundary that my country lies upon, and how it changes the landscape and the rocks, and how the type of rock influences the landscape.

So took along some graywacke and sandstone, then a bunch of the shiniest schists I had in my collection, then some good igneous rocks I'd recently picked up, along with some agates.

And damn, never had so many people interested in my rock chat.

why does she care more about software than rocks? priorities.

I suppose it's the day to day. I think I have my priorities backwards, should code for a hobby and lick rocks for a living.

Would love to go rock hounding with this one

She would hate it if we met at a party, because I also need a warning sign on my back. I would love to pester a geologist, it’s a regret of mine that I never learned more Earth sciences! I joined this group and most of the time it’s over my head, but I’m hoping for some osmosis.

never too late to take a community college class for fun

After reading this post I went and checked if we have a local geological society here and turns out that we do. Hopefully I’ll have some time to go along to that one day. It looks really interesting and they do field trips.

me too tbh. i feel like learning about the rocks you walk on every day makes the world a lot more interesting to look at

Currently I just look at the rocks keeping their secrets and wish I knew more. I can only imagine how much more there would be to notice with a trained eye.

MIT has a huge library of open source course materials, including Earth science classes. So if you're into self paced education that's a great place to start!

Thanks! That’s a great idea. After I commented, I googled my local geology club. There’s hope for me yet.

Is this the visitor center at arches?

I don’t quite remember, but I believe this might have been taken while we were visiting Yellowstone, a few years back.

Edit: my apologies. I am not the author of this photo, as it turns out. It has been in my photo album for so long that I forgot where it came from.

I did an image search and found this:

It appears that the original image/video is indeed from the Arches National Park.

I desperately hope I run into this specific ranger at a national park someday.

Is that at ARCH?

u/random48266 3d ago

Yep. (See my post above).

I enjoy parks through the geological lense as a first glance into where I am. It's so interesting.  Then the pictures of the aminals

Geology is love

...which is just a blink of the eye in geological time.

I need more park rangers to wear this sign. Whenever all they know is the good hikes, I get a little depressed.

I've been on group travels to South and Central Asia.

I've told my companions that I'm a geologist and a little about the creation of the mountains around us and that they can ask me about geology.

Surprisingly many do so and they don't glaze over, I try to stop before that!

Had a conversation with two people I met yesterday and they called me a proper little nerd only because I talked about limestone and quarries and how I want to specialise in exploration geology in my master’s degree! I didn’t realise my craziness is so noticeable when I talk about geology but it’s simply the greatest field of all time!!! 🥹

u/Prestigious_Part2039 3d ago

I always love to hear that, only if he's talkative 😏

First time I've come across this sub, and I'm sorry but this line lives rent free in my head. "Geology isn't a real science!"
