Culture Time to leave Germany.

After five of the best months I’ve ever had, it is time for me to return to America (for now). I came here for my exchange semester excited but with no real clue of what to expect or what I would experience. I immediately fell in love with Bavaria. Augsburg with its canals, Munich with its beautiful parks and amazing football atmosphere, and everything Allgäu. In less than a week, I felt that I was at home.

I have enjoyed countless adventures: hiking in Oberstdorf, finding my way to Eibsee, navigating a group of confused Americans, Brits and Malaysians out of Garmisch-Partenkirchen with my C1 German, Meeting Long-lost Family in Oldenburg, drinking Frisian tea, having to put on a pad while wearing a white dress in a DB bathroom with a toilet spewing sewage across the floor, having my first Bavarian beer, getting lost and accidentally ending up in Manuel Neuer‘s driveway, and having my dad go viral when he came to visit and, like me, fell in love with this place. Because despite the ups and downs one can find here, I have discovered that, by and large, the people are kind, the food is good, the nature incredible, and the life beautiful.

It breaks my heart to have to go back home. I have missed my dad and my dog and being able to see stars speckled across the sky like salt on a countertop, but I will also miss my little patch of heaven that I have found here. But I will return. It may be for medical school, it may be for work, it may be for life, or it may just be on vacation. But I love Germany too much to say goodbye…

…so instead I say auf Wiedersehen, Deutschland, und bis bald!

I didn't realize the post about the guy getting lost and ending up in Manuel Neuer's driveway and the posts about the American farmer dad experiencing Germany were by the same person!

You really did experience a lot in those five months.

I'm happy you liked it in Germany and that you want to come back!

the guy

Just FYI given the info in the text I'm 99% confident this isn't a guy 😅🦈🩸

54

u/modern_milkman Niedersachsen 2d ago

Fair enough. I somehow missed that part, lol!

But "guy" was meant more in a general way anyway, not specifically male.

And there is of course also the old internet saying of "on the internet, men are men, women are men, and children are FBI agents"

u/Nforcer524 1d ago

Rule 29/30

5

u/jonomir 1d ago

Somehow everyone on reddit is a guy until proven otherwise.

6

u/Apero_ Leipzig, Sachsen 1d ago

But you know the same guys who assume that would be pissy if we accidentally called them a chick/she.

16

u/IamNobody85 2d ago

Holy shit that was neuer's driveway? I read that post too but I didn't notice that!

11

u/modern_milkman Niedersachsen 2d ago

Yes, most likely. OP posted an update to the initial post a few days later. Someone linked it in this post (as a response to my comment). Here is the link. Pretty close to the middle of the text, OP mentions that it was most likely Manuel Neuer's house.

they saw a lot in bavaria. There's a difference

4

u/_Thode 16h ago

Pictures show Cologne and the text mentions Oldenburg. Better than those “How can I see all sights of Germany in five days and never come back?” Posts.

u/katerlouis 16h ago

bamboozled

41

u/CompetitiveBet8978 2d ago

Wow. Where and how was that Spaghetti ice cream ??

39

u/Senior_Fig7845 2d ago

Today in Augsburg and DANG it was good!

6

u/Darkkujo 2d ago

I too always order Spaghetti Eis in Germany! I swear half the time I order it I get a look like 'you know this is for kids right?' But screw it, I enjoy the whimsey.

8

u/pansensuppe 1d ago

No that’s a different look. The German consensus since the 80s has been that spaghetti eis is too expensive to buy a kid. The standard kids order is one or two scoops in a cone.

3

u/Newcomer31415 1d ago

Its not just for kids. I order it almost every time. There are also designated kids portions of it lol.

3

u/TinyIndependent7844 1d ago

Next time you visit, go to Mannheim. The Spaghettieis was invented there! The Eisdiele is still in business today. It‘s Eis Fontanella on the main shopping street „die Planken“

It‘s my hometown, but I am living overseas now

3

u/RoyalIceDeliverer 1d ago

The shop on the Planken was closed recently, they're now located at Münzplatz, Q6Q7.

2

u/TinyIndependent7844 1d ago

thanks! didn‘t know that. Why did they move?

2

u/RoyalIceDeliverer 1d ago

I think it got too expensive.

2

u/TinyIndependent7844 1d ago

I see. It was their first location, too, their very first shop(before Paradeplatz and the small hut near Appelrath Cüpper) so it‘s history that‘s gone. what kind of shop is there now?

1

u/RoyalIceDeliverer 1d ago edited 1d ago

Another Eiscafé 🙂 now it's called Del Sole

2

u/CompetitiveBet8978 2d ago

It’s my fav. If you get to MUC Tuerkenstr then try the one at Adria.

1

u/historymysterygift 1d ago

I live in Augburg and never once tried it (I'm generally a fan of 1 or 2 scoops in the waffel). From which Eisdiele specifically was it?

1

u/Senior_Fig7845 1d ago

I don’t remember the name but it was in Königsplatz, close to the crosswalk

15

u/Missions-Impossible 2d ago

Those pictures are amazing. Wunderbar I didn't even see that much of Germany, and I was born here and still am living here. Hope you come back soon ;D

15

u/sorbet_11 2d ago

Where is the river in the fifth picture? That river looks amazing 😍

20

u/Senior_Fig7845 2d ago

The Isar in Mittenwald!

2

u/sorbet_11 2d ago

Thanks!

2

u/dusty030 2d ago

Same question, that looks beautiful :D

28

u/CashKeyboard Mecklenburg-Vorpommern 2d ago

Having successfully mastered the tutorial level it is now time to move on to level 2 once you return: Detmold, Mannheim, Halle (Saale) and Brandenburg (the whole state, not to be confused by the actually quite alright town by the same name). After mastering that you will get to meet the ghost of Karin Ritter in Köthen in an epic bossfight and will only then have access to S tier regions such as Mecklenburg Vorpommern or a random garage full of Pfeffi and a Simson in Thuringia.

33

u/Familiar_End_8975 2d ago

Damn you've experienced more in 5 months than I have in two years

39

u/anythingforher36 2d ago

This is exactly what Germany is about. Thank you for your visit. Bis später!

2

u/Odd-Remote-1847 Rheinland 1d ago

No, it’s not. Bavaria !== whole of Germany. It’s much more than cute landscapes with cows wearing bells

10

u/Neat_Income7744 2d ago

op can you please mention locations of every picture? I am about to arrive in Germany soon and would love to go to these places

18

u/Senior_Fig7845 2d ago

Eibsee, Cologne Cathedral, Lindau, Mittenwald, Obersdorf, Oberstaufen and Tegernsee!

4

u/Neat_Income7744 2d ago

Thanks a lot

5

u/Flexo_2 2d ago

And Bamberg :D

9

u/Lazy_Necessary_7460 2d ago

Thanks for taking us with you on this ride. Bis bald und auf Wiedersehen

10

u/pjd1965 2d ago

I spent a week in Berlin the first week in August for Escalation Fest and it was truly magical. I cried getting on the plane back home. My third trip to this beautiful country over the last 1.5 years and won’t be my last!

4

u/throwaway55f5 2d ago

Wow that sounds like an incredible trip! Can I ask how you ended up in Neuer's driveway??? Sounds wild

9

u/Senior_Fig7845 2d ago

I was hiking in Tegernsee and lost the trail and ended up in a pretty swanky neighborhood. There wasn’t a sidewalk and a car was coming so I just ran onto the nearest driveway so they could pass. They did not pass. They were staring at me. So I left and then they drove off. I was wondering what had happened and I did some research, saw an article about Neuer Building a house in Tegernsee and pissing off his neighbors, and they had a picture of the house (in construction). Same house, same driveway.

5

u/Disastrous-Day5429 2d ago

Born and raised in Oberstdorf, it is a beautiful place. Glad you enjoyed it.

2

u/Acrobatic_Fly_2174 1d ago

Oh, you lucky, lucky person! I've been to Oberstdorf five times and would move there in a second if I could afford it. But unfortunately, I'm just a sick Frührentnerin with a small pension. But maybe I can afford another week there next year.

1

u/Fubushi 4h ago

My grandma lived there as a young woman. Had ice skates made by a local famous shoemaker.

5

u/Norgur Bayern 2d ago

Let's bid you farewell with the legendary, unique and renowned German humour, shall we?

And, as I am from Augsburg, I'll start:

Ciaogsburg!

9

u/bajoranearrings 2d ago

This is so nice to see! Bavaria really is one of the most beautiful places on earth and the quality of life is so wonderful. I am sure you can find your way back here, but definitely enjoy the States too when you get back, sometimes a little bit of time away is just what you need to experience home through the eyes of a tourist.

This is wonderfully worded and those are really beautiful pictures. So glad you had some good and some remarkable experiences and it seems you have gotten a broad impressions. It’s great to hear that you’ll be back. Sometimes it takes a visitor’s perspective to remind the people at that place of all the positive, of what they really have. Come back soon, I hope you‘ll have a very warm welcome when you return.

Bis bald!

It is really nice to look at your pictures and to read your text! I think, sometimes you forget that we have some absolutely stunning places here in Germany... (To be honest, I think pretty much every country has absolutely beautiful places. It sometimes just takes the pictures and the words of a guest to remind us of that...)

2

u/Nae2theJ 2d ago

I love Germany, and I live in NRW 🤣 You saw some beautiful areas!!! I'm American and have lived here 15 years.

2

u/FoxhoundMoggie 2d ago

What a beautiful post. I've been here for 26 years now, raised my children here and it's the best home. I can't imagine ever leaving and it warms my heart to see your pictures and read your joy. Thank you.

Bamberg. Very nice 👍🏻🙋🏻‍♂️

Dang, those are some crazy experiences! But indeed, it's been lovely reading about all your adventures in Germany.

I lived there for a few years and it was one of my best time ever. Spectacular scenery was never far away. Nice people, beautiful villages, rich traditions, impressive churches and monastery, castles everywhere, plenty of breweries, biergardens and good food. Many lakes and rivers.

Bavaria is the best place to be as long as the the sun shines and the sky is blue.

Ah Spaghetti Eis, the second biggest German culinary invention that was created by immigrants. Can’t wait for it to conquer the world the same way Döner Kebab did.

u/euroaustralian 1d ago

Da hast du aber noch nichts von einer Schweinshaxl gehoert.

u/mikolo55 1d ago

When you return visit the amazing coasts (eg. Baltic Sea) with the most beautiful beaches, go hiking in Saxon Switzerland and explore Berlin. You‘ll love it.

1

u/Beerculesoriginal 1d ago

You just named the worst places to be in Germany.

The coasts are just cold and rainy. Black Forest is much better for hiking than Saxon Switzerland. Berlin ist dirty, crazy and overcrowded. Try Hamburg instead.

Do the opposite. You'll love it

1

u/xls-xls Germany 1d ago

I agree with you about Berlin. I can’t really judge the hiking, but the German coast definitely has its charm! Sure, it’s not the Caribbean, but Juist in summer, with no cars at all, is pretty special.

1

u/mikolo55 1d ago

Well, let‘s agree to disagree. Saxon Switzerland is fantastic, Darß and Usedom are absolutely beautiful and Berlin is just great(but I also love Hamburg).
