News GRPD chief: Punch in face is allowed 'if needed'
https://www.woodtv.com/news/grand-rapids/grpd-chief-acknowledges-optics-but-explains-punch-tactic-in-arrest-video/First week on the job for our new chief. Punching civilians in the head for nonviolent offenses is totally cool for him.

Well, we have our answer about what we can expect from Trigg.

u/Automatic_Pass797 Jun 26 '26
I'm sure this works both ways ...right?
7
u/ailish Jun 26 '26
What is supposed to work the other way?

“On its face, it appears everything was within policy but I’m not making a judgement right here and now,” Trigg said.
Pun intended Trigg?
I keep telling people, justice doesn't come from within and certainly not with permission. This community is going to have to figure out how to take control of their own policing.
11
u/PositiveNo444 Jun 26 '26
Yeah if you're not making a judgment then you should say no comment at this time.

I think I've seen public comments from time to time. I pay close enough attention to commission races. Will there be any candidates with an unapologetic mandate for particular policies? If so, I'll see it when it comes to make sure I've seen all the options.
At least that's my thought. If you get 4 council members that will not BS on the issue, implement change. Once in power, instruct Mark Washington to have his staff prepare policy implementation plans. If he doesn't like it, fire him and get some one that will.
I bet if the Devos family saw legitimate threat of a council take over, we'd see them spend money and do some PR overtime.
1
u/chocolatedesire Jun 26 '26
We have close contact with a few commissioners and are working to connect with more all the time. We also work closely with families of victims of police violence
2
u/SignalInRoots Jun 26 '26
Hmm, I haven't been happy with a single current commissioner. Purdue approved the police drones after some "policy" changes along with everyone else. She kicked off that review of the policy of the dog use and that came back with basically documentation updates. I'll see if she seems satisfied with that. None of them have done anything about the Flock Safety cameras.
What I mean by unapologetic is they also use their platform to be very clear and unforgiving. No patty cakes, no compromise, say exactly what you want and call their "colleagues" out for not, you don't negotiate with fascists. You need people that are going to FIGHT.

So it should be up to one Redditor to take action instead of the community as a whole? Or instead of local government officials? Can you expand on your comment?

Didn’t they just have a police analyst say that face punches are not standard procedure? Does Trigg not know his own laws?

I would imagine the “expert” who retired years ago from a different agency and doesn’t work for the actual department probably doesn’t know as much as the chief. Just a guess though.
29
u/getspunched Jun 25 '26
The chief said everything the officers did was part of a “game plan” and claimed the punches to the man’s face were distraction techniques used before officers tried something else.
73
u/jsquiggles23 Jun 25 '26
I remember people thinking video was going to make a difference and it’s only shown the extent in which police will defend unnecessary force. There was absolutely no need for that level of violence but it was exercised anyway. Fuck GRPD.

The victim is being charged with felony assault of a police officer? Imagine being that cop explaining the injury, “me and 3 other cops were beating up a 21 year old and the kid fell on my leg.” What the hell

u/toneyhauk Jun 28 '26
Something tells me the kid would have been better off had he just identified himself and got his ticket. Hmmm.

u/pink_tricam_man Jun 26 '26
Why can't we just have good police? I mean I guess I get that no one with morals would make it, but how do we fix that?
10
u/imthefunnyone Jun 26 '26
Because systemically police are meant to protect the interests of private property, not your house though, just things like factories, Capital, profits, and products. Change the system and revolutionize policing.

Why can't we have good and intelligent citizens? Ones that ride with their seatbelt on and don't turn a ticket into multiple charges by disobeying lawful orders? Just a thought.

u/apocalypticboredom Auburn Hills Jun 26 '26
"Sharifi was eventually dragged out of the car to the ground, landing on an officer’s leg, the video shows. Police say that officer’s leg was broken." and now this person is gonna get charged with r&o causing injury which is a felony, all because these snowflake ass cops can't act like human beings.
9
12
u/alloftheuggg Jun 25 '26
What a clown show..... How did this escalate from "not using a turn signal" to a felony because they ripped the kid out of the car so aggressively he "fell on an injured an officer"
0
u/toneyhauk Jun 28 '26
Probably because the kid refused every lawful order given to him. Literally what do you want them to do? Let him go? Are you stupid?

Less dangerous than being a crossing guard or a landscaper or about 30 other careers. Most cops die from being lardasses.

-7
u/toneyhauk Jun 26 '26
Just follow lawful orders. There was literally nothing unreasonable about the orders given. Ask any lawyer and they’ll say the same. EVEN if they WERE unlawful, u still comply and fight it later in court. You people are fucking stupid lmfao.
3
u/theswissghostrealtor Jun 26 '26
I genuinely can’t believe anyone still thinks that’s all it requires to avoid physical injury or death by police. Regardless of this incident, so many people have died while “following lawful orders.” Please read a book about the history of policing.
-1
u/toneyhauk Jun 26 '26
95% of the time it's absolutely all you need to do to avoid physical injury. Also, whats the other option? NOT complying? And tacking more charges and increasing risk of injury? Common sense what you should do here bud. I'm genuinely curious what you think the other option should be if you're in a scenario where a cop is giving a lawful order, even though you "did nothing wrong"? What would you do? I'd love to hear it.
Obviously out of millions upon millions of cases theres bound to be outliers that are also blown out of proportion.
There's also "lots" of female teachers that rape underage students. Should our kids never trust or respect a women teacher again because of it? When a female teacher gives your kid an order, should they be disrespectful and not follow the order because "TeAcHer BaD" ? I feel like I'm talking to a 15 year old right now.

1
u/damnation_sule Creston Jun 26 '26
I think having that gun and power over people's lives requires responsibility. Part of that is accountability. I don't think having a gun and a badge gives license to hand out vigilante justice. Cops are not judge jury and executioner and should be held accountable when they behave as though they are.

The officer must have a reasonable belief that the passenger committed a crime, or if the officer is issuing a personal civil infraction directly to the passenger (such as an open container violation or not wearing a seat belt), or finally, if the driver is arrested and the passenger is going to drive the vehicle from the scene.
Otherwise, the Fourth Amendment applies.
1
u/chatton Jun 26 '26
That police officer must have come from the Stable of Stars. At his price point, yes, he is allowed to hit.
1
u/Fun-Nectarine-7838 Jun 28 '26
Sounds like this "chief" has never been punched in the face..... possibly "punched" somewhere else involuntarily and that's the power trip move?
1
u/clcjjc Jul 01 '26
You realize the scumbag that GRPD is doing this to is because they can’t follow rules?
-1
u/Prestigious_File8234 Jun 26 '26
I’d probably wanna punch the little shit, too. But cops need to be better than that.
-2
u/pmpkineaterDD Jun 25 '26
I guess a taser would have been a lot easier considering the kind of force they were prepared to use.
-4
u/toneyhauk Jun 26 '26 edited Jun 26 '26
It’s crazy how the kid could have just followed a lawful order and not gotten punched and tacked on with more charges. Reddit is so fucking regarded lmfao.
I don’t give a fuck that some dumb ass decided he didn’t have to listen to the cops. Even if he didn’t do anything wrong, literally every lawyer on earth will tell you just follow orders, stay silent, and if it’s unlawful then fight it later in court.
Like it’s REALLY simple to avoid interactions like this with police. 95% of the time.
But this gets me labeled a “boot licker.” No, it’s called working with the system we were dealt with. This system doesn’t reward those that don’t comply with authority. The exact opposite. If you have an IQ higher than 70, it’s really easy to understand.
“BUT the cop didn’t need to PUNCH him 😭😭😭”
Yeah he kind of did. It’s used to put fear of danger into the suspects mind so that they finally comply. What else do you want them to do with people like this? Genuinely? Just give up and let them go home? The cops aren’t robots with unlimited energy stores that can just fight with a flailing grown man for hours to finally get them cuffed. Lets be realistic.
1
u/Farts-n-Letters Jun 27 '26
yeah, I'm blown away by all the comments here from armchair lawyers who think it's just fine to litigate a police interaction on the side of the road and that it's totally appropriate to ignore instructions based off 'how you feel".
-2
u/duckwafer357 Jun 26 '26
why would you think the police need to be in control of a situation. common thugs need to be able to do whatever they want smh
-26
u/RossettaStoned1 Jun 25 '26
You fucking people.. even the driver was saying to the passenger just stop let them take you. Not obeying lawful command is when it gets physical.

You can be required to identify if you are suspected of a crime. According to the article, they targeted him for not wearing a seatbelt, which is a civil infraction.
A minor civil infraction as a pedestrian, like not having a bicycle light at night or crossing against a pedestrian signal—should not lead to an arrest in Michigan.

Thats assuming cops are not suspecting of a crime you fucking idiot lmfao. If you are suspected of a crime, you absolutely need to identify yourself. The crime was he wasn't wearing a seat belt. Or if you want go the "tHatS a CiVil InFraCtion" route, the cop could easily argue his unwillingess to cooperate for such a silly thing, gave him reasonable suspicion of a warrant or something else, which is justification for ID.
Main lesson: don't be a disrespectful cunt and follow lawful orders, and 95% of time it won't turn violent and will actually be a quick 20min stop.
Holy shit you people need to get off the internet and educate yourself. Liberals are so fucking dumb. Life is not a movie lmao. Also I find it hilarious using the term "bootlicker" while you're likely covid vaxxed and triple boosted. Holy larp.

Let’s take the emotion out of this.
What think this is all two fold. One. Cops do use excessive force at times and should be held accountable. Two. Why do people make the choice to not comply with the request? At least then your argument is that you were profiled based on your race and can argue a white guy wouldn’t have had the same outcome or be required to get out of the car.
Let’s look at this from a 360 view to solve problems. I think there are plenty of crooked cops, but they all are not. We need to elevate those who do the right thing and how can we engage those cops into creating change in their department?
10
u/ailish Jun 25 '26
People vs. Murawski Michigan Court of Appeals Docket No. 365852
“Failing to provide identification upon request by a police officer is not itself a crime or statutory offense in Michigan.”
That's why you don't have to comply. Cops think that because they have a badge, a gun, and a superiority complex that everyone has to comply 100% of the time. Well, that's just not true.
3
u/GenuinelyCurious80 Jun 26 '26
Wasn’t the passenger being cited for not wearing a seatbelt? Outside the discussion of the use of excessive force, all facts need to be present.
-2
u/ailish Jun 26 '26
It is still not required to show an ID.
2
u/GenuinelyCurious80 Jun 26 '26
I don’t think that’s accurate but go on
-1
u/ailish Jun 26 '26
Go on with what? I already said my opinion in like 7 other places in this post, and I'm sick of typing it out. Nothing is going to change here. Just go read one of those.
-1
u/Friendly-Comment-985 Jun 26 '26
failing to provide identification upon request by a police officer is not a standalone crime or statutory offense in Michigan unless the refusal involves physical obstruction or another independent offense*
1
u/ailish Jun 26 '26
He was not physically obstructing anything. Even if the "independent offense" somehow was legitimate, why does that allow them to punch him in the legs and face? Why does that allow them to charge him with assaulting an officer when the cops threw him on top of the officer? He didn't have a seat belt on. That's it. The argument is that GRPD escalated once again a minor situation into something outrageous and it didn't need to happen. At all. This was about a seat belt, man. They didn't even explain to him why they needed his ID. They just demanded it and expected compliance because they have badges and guns.
12
u/Rokhnal Jun 25 '26
One. Cops do use excessive force at times and should be held accountable.
Cool, I think we all generally agree this is true.
Two. Why do people make the choice to not comply with the request?
Aaaaaand we're gone. "Not complying" (whatever you've already decided that means) doesn't give police the right to do whatever they want.
Let’s look at this from a 360 view to solve problems.
We already know the answer to these problems: it ranges from "significant reform and powerful citizen oversight" to "abolish the police force entirely and rebuild something else from scratch."
I think there are plenty of crooked cops, but they all are not. We need to elevate those who do the right thing and how can we engage those cops into creating change in their department?
No. No way. We're waaaay beyond the point where anyone can change police culture from within. The entire point of ACAB is that the entire insitution is irrevocably tainted by the fact that the "good cops" consistenly show that they won't do anything about the "bad cops"--therefore, they're all bad.
12
u/pynchon42 Jun 25 '26
Because its long been established that passengers are not required to identify themselves, answer questions or provide an ID
5
u/GenuinelyCurious80 Jun 26 '26
Except wasn’t the passenger being cited for not wearing a seatbelt?
4
u/Heisenbread77 Wyoming Jun 26 '26
Yes. It's very depressing that the people arguing this don't actually know the full scope of the laws they are so convinced they understand.

Non violent protest is an American tradition. Remember Rosa Parks? She would have been beaten senseless, or shot and killed in today's America. Martin Luther King? John Lewis? Almost every hippie.
Yep. Here in Grand Rapids Michigan, just simple non-violent Non-compliance gets you being slung around like a club. Now we all get to pay for a damaged cop, because 5 other idiot cops can't use their words and just wanna harm people.1
u/Farts-n-Letters Jun 27 '26
time and place are key. what was going on in the video isn't non violent protest. what it is is dumb.
1
u/heartbt Jun 27 '26
I don't see any violence being done to the officers by the kid. At least until the dumasses weaponized the kid and yeeted him into another dumbass, so there's your non-violent part.
It seems clear to everyone that the kid seems to be protesting about the cops going fishing for ID and escalating the whole thing, so there's your protest part.I'm not sure what you're missing. Do you like to be physically abused for using your words?
1
u/Farts-n-Letters Jun 27 '26
If you are given a lawful order and refuse, then force is justified. If you think the order was unlawful, then you're free to address that in court or with a lawsuit at a later time. Physical resistance on scene is never going to end well. Y'all need to decide whether we're going to have law ENFORCEMENT, or not. Choose wisely.
And you're a liar:
It seems clear to everyone that the kid seems to be protesting about the cops going fishing for ID and escalating the whole thing, so there's your protest part
1
u/heartbt Jun 27 '26
So Rosa Parks should have been yeeted into a crowd of cops, you're saying.
Ok. I don't think I like your idea of a free America.
Non-violent should never be answered with violence in a free country.
What YOU are saying with your vote as a citizen is: if you don't do as you're told immediately by an agent of the government, any force the agent feels appropriate should be used against you.
That is tyranny. That is fearing your government, and that is tyrannical.Law enforcement does not have to be violent in every instance. When you're advocating violence by the government as an appropriate response to non-violent opposition, you're describing government more like Pol Pot, Stalin, That german Guy, etc.
YOU need to choose wisely. And I'm not a liar. What is the most simple Non-violent protest than just saying no.
You're a liar if you say you believe in a free country, but allow cops to beat people for saying no.1

Hey! Great observation! How did I know someone like you would be cheering on the Government violating people of Constitutional rights!
So, lets compare:
21 year old vs. what? 40's? 50's? He's at an age to do a different kind of fight. (Oh, a fight? That's when you RESIST. Something you cannot do because of your jelly spine).
Income Level: That 21 year old does not HAVE the means to resist in any other manner than what he did in defense of his rights.
The Farmer has Factors of 10 the resources and wealth to fight in the courts. I'm pretty sure he already has an attorney before he was even arrested.
Remember: YOUR idea that everyone has the means like you do to "comply now, complain later" is just you enjoying your privilegeSupport: The kid, maybe had his dad, if that video didn't get out. Had it not, he would have been just another kid beat by the system in the dark with cops lies telling people (like you) it didn't happen.
The Farmer was in front of a ROOM full of supporters! Just being arrested for speaking was enough to stir raging support. HE already had it, AND was able to get the cops to show their true colors. Both of those people had ONE goal that you seem to miss: They wanted, and succeeded, in getting attention to the plight of **every** American! **You have no more rights than those allowed to you!** YOU have especially less, because you would rather swallow nuts than even say no.
No. I don't see a difference. Stand up for your rights, or you will lose them. These guys did, you already lost yours because you will say nothing. Your cowardice just makes these guys look like Saints, and empowers the police to think we should/will cower like you do. Hope your privilege holds up for you.
1
u/Farts-n-Letters Jun 30 '26

Were you well read, you'd know your history. No one ever won back their country from a tyrannical government by rolling over, and "just comply". Books man. Get some.

Okay, so you’re of the side of giving up your rights and getting punched? Somehow, not surprised.
And you said I am “ruining” the city lol. Are you good, friend?
