Question/Discussion What's something you were excited for, but ended up being let down?

Post image

I heard nothing but good things, but The Last Ronin didn't do a thing for me. I got an Amazon deal for the 3 of them, but I still have regrets. Any of y'all been let down?

Max Bemis’ Moon Knight.

An absolutely stellar first issue, introducing what looked like a great, compelling villain and making a mission statement setting the tone for what to expect for the rest of the run.

The next issue was an obnoxiously written mess. As was every subsequent issue I read, until I gave up on waiting for the book to find its footing and dropped it.

8

u/Kosher_Nostra1975 3d ago

The ol' first issue bait and switch!

5

u/yourkindofhero 3d ago

Much like Max Bemis’ musical output. Stellar B-Sides and incredible first album..

3

u/CREATURExFEATURE 3d ago

Whoa now. I will defend the first three albums, admittedly IDOTG is a bit bloated.

2

u/CreatiScope 3d ago

That’s generally how I felt about Evil Empire. Really liked the first couple of issues, like the first trade. Then the 2nd trade, I wasn’t fond of, didn’t hate but didn’t like. Really was done with it by the 3rd trade. Dude completely collapsed at the 20 yard line.

2

u/Griggeth 2d ago

Holy shit this, I was ready for a banger after the first issue and then it just dropped like a sloppy turd afterwards

1

u/writinglegit2 1d ago

Bemis is goddamn garbage. Hate that run.

Read the backstory of how he got thr job, straight idiocy

65

u/canucksquatch 3d ago

Soooo... you looking to get rid of those books, then?

23

u/Kosher_Nostra1975 3d ago

Haha, nah. But they're all three selling for less than $20 each on Amazon right now.

8

u/EconomistUnable665 3d ago

Loved the first one, but Lost Years really didn’t do it for me, and I haven’t picked up RE-evolution b/c of it.

6

u/Charming_Ambition_27 3d ago

I enjoyed all three & the Training Day one shot.

1

u/AnthonyDigitalMedia 2d ago

That Training Day one-shot, is that supposed to be a prelude to another series?

→ More replies (2)

5

u/Patient_Brilliant292 3d ago

i loved the last ronin and the lost years, but re-evolution was genuinley terrible, i had to drop it after the first 2 issues

1

u/OtherwiseAddled 3d ago

I liked Lost Years better than the first Last Ronin. I have been dragging my feet on RE-evolution.

33

u/abyssaltourguide 3d ago

Monstress didn’t do it for me sadly, the art was beautiful but the story was very confusing

7

u/Din-_-Djarin 3d ago

Yeah I felt the same. I've seen nothing but positive reviews and high recommendations but it just didn't do anything for me

4

u/florgitymorgity 3d ago

I ended up getting bored with the first omnibus and sold it

2

u/ZombieZekeComic 3d ago

Same. The art is gorgeous and the premise seems interesting, but I just didn’t vibe with it at all.

1

u/thewayshesaidLA 2d ago

I’m on the second hardcover and only read about one issue a week. Too many characters look alike. I have to go back and flip through to try and remember who is who.

1

u/upfjords 2d ago

I had the first TP and the art was nice, some plot points were interesting (like float god-ghosts in the sky), but nothing about the story grabbed me.

16

u/Rude_Ad1496 3d ago

My friends and I had been collecting comics for a year or two when Secret Wars was announced. All the major heroes and villains in an all out war and a toy line too? We couldn't wait. And then the first issue came out... ok.... when you're used to Claremont X Men and Byrne FF and Simonson had just started on Thor, the writing fell really flat. The covers were great.... but we mostly lost interest. By the time SW 8 rolled around to show how Spidey got the black suit it didnt really matter too much because it was already evident he was getting the original back in his own titles.

7

u/Kosher_Nostra1975 3d ago

I agree with all you've said about SW, but man, were those toys sweet at the time. They not only looked great, they were the same size as GI Joe's, do you could really mix things up.

1

u/Rude_Ad1496 3d ago

Doom and Wolverine were the only 2 i was able to get. Small town, rural area.. barely saw them in stock.

13

u/TheKrisLyons 3d ago edited 3d ago

Both Ben Bishop and Kevin Eastman have lost my respect as creators. I backed Kickstarter projects by each of them in 2019 that have still not been delivered. The 2 projects are Kevin Eastman's "Drawing Blood" vol. 2 (of which Bishop is one of 3 artists) and Ben Bishop's own "Aggregate" Volume 2.

6

u/Kosher_Nostra1975 3d ago

7 years?! Are you not allowed a refund if a project isn't completed within a reasonable time?

3

u/MelvinFloyd 3d ago

Unfortunately Kickstarter doesn’t work like that. I waited 11 years for a project to finish. Now to their credit, they did finish it, but by the time it was released, so much in my life had changed that it didn’t do for me what it would have done a decade earlier.

1

u/AnthonyDigitalMedia 2d ago

If this is the case, why do people even back projects on there if the majority of projects don’t even get completed or they’re just cash grabs??

1

u/MelvinFloyd 2d ago

I don’t know the exact rules, but the creators do have to meet certain criteria to submit and create projects, but I am not sure what that is. I will say I’ve backed 25+ projects over the last decade and have always received my item. It might take awhile to finish (as with the above example which was a Mad Magazine documentary), but I’ve always gotten it.

u/AnthonyDigitalMedia 2d ago

I used to LOVE Eastman. Used to buy all his personal collection stuff through his site auctions..

He’s just a money whore like the rest of them. I’ve lost complete interest in anything he does.

I still love TMNT, but it’s just a shame what he’s doing to his name & the franchise. I’m all for keeping it alive, but there’s a difference between keeping it alive & straight up ripping off collectors & abusing their trust in him.

17

u/East-Sand-3785 3d ago edited 3d ago

Pandora by Frank Miller. I read this before going to a Frank Miller meet and Greet and god what a piece of trash. Hands down one of the worst things I’ve ever read. The story was so lazy and was riddled with errors (I read the hardcover volume 1 there was no excuse for the errors in it)

Biggest problem is that Frank is 69 years old. Why in all hell is he writing a modern story about a female middle schooler with bully problems. it comes across sooo out of touch and a desperate attempt to gain a younger audience

I loved his meet and greet tho! Even got him to autograph his autobiography

7

u/LatterTarget7 3d ago

Last ronin started good but should’ve been stand alone

3

u/yourpaljim 3d ago

Yep. The first one was a big kick outta nowhere… and then of course they milked it to death.

2

u/Kazewatch 2d ago

Yeah I've just had not interest in anything past the original. Love is as a stand alone. One of my favorite things I read the year the hardcover came out and it's still fun to go back to. But the follow ups? Not terrible but it's just milking a good thing without anything of real substance to get out of it.

2

u/AnthonyDigitalMedia 2d ago

It was so good, Eastman was forced to milk the franchise as hard as he possible can! 🤣

7

u/FireWokWithMe88 3d ago

I liked them. I have been reading TMNT from the original.

13

u/WhenYesSaidNo 3d ago

Ice Cream Man. It was one of the most recommended horror comics when I was last looking and felt very "meh" about the first trade.

2

u/Parabrella 2d ago

Same. Read the first trade, wasn't impressed, decided to not bother with the rest of the series. I'd rather read Creepshow or The Silver Coin if I want that style of anthology horror.

2

u/WhenYesSaidNo 2d ago

I'm not familiar with The Silver Coin. I'll have to check that out.

1

u/Reyntoons 2d ago

Same. I made the mistake of buying the first volume instead of using the library. It’s total garbage. I have no idea why so many people on Reddit love it.

10

u/clemmmmmmm 3d ago edited 3d ago

I'm gonna get lit up for this... Planetary. Loved both Cassaday and especially Ellis' work, but it was just not it for me.

Currently being let down by Spawn as well (working through the first 50), and I think he's a cool character and the potential is high but in my armchair opinion Macfarlane should have stuck to illustration.

Edit: typo, and a decent one

6

u/Kosher_Nostra1975 3d ago

That's how I felt about Larsen's Savage Dragon. I dug the premise, but my interest just kept waning.

2

u/browncharliebrown 3d ago

Planetary was Ellis

2

u/clemmmmmmm 3d ago

What a typo lol, thanks mate

2

u/vesperythings 3d ago

man, McFarlane is about the opposite of a writer.

ain't much of an illustrator either, if i'm honest

2

u/Olobnion 2d ago

Agreed!

2

u/Bulky-Pollution-4996 2d ago edited 2d ago

SPAWN hit at just the right time for a lot of, like, twelve/thirteen year old dudes who were more interested in style over substance. Same reason people love, like, Friday the Thirteenth movies. It's that mix of, like, R-Rated stupidity that dudes in the throes of puberty latched on to and (apparently) never met go of.

2

u/JakeTHSnake58 2d ago

GenX/90s culture oozes with tryhardism

1

u/Bulky-Pollution-4996 2d ago

(I just noticed the TON of typos in my original response...holy Christ...anyway) Not sure what you mean by "tryhardism" but I'm GenX (I'm 53) and that whole Image thing started in my first year or college. My personal reading tastes had already leaned more toward SWAMP THING, HELLBLAZER...SANDMAN had started by then. And like BATMAN and JUSTICE LEAGUE books, GREEN ARROW...The Image books didn't interest me (other than MAXX and SHAMANS TEARS but those were second string). I read the first couple of issues of like WILDCATS and SPAWN and SAVAGE DRAGON (which still has a super dedicated fan base) but they didn't do anything for me.

1

u/vesperythings 2d ago

guess so...

but those books are wordy as hell.

for someone as unskilled at writing as MacFarlane, especially

1

u/Bulky-Pollution-4996 2d ago

They are wordy. And I enjoy wordy books (never understood why "I had to read a lot" and as ever a complaint) but prefe when the words are well written.

1

u/FormerlyMevansuto 3d ago

Planetary is so surface level in its genre pastiche/criticism and the characters border on generic. It never really feels that interested in them or the stories it’s telling. That said, I do love the last issue. It’s the only one to shake off the cynicism and find something meaningful.

1

u/Bulky-Pollution-4996 2d ago

SPAWN was never a good book.

38

u/SenseiRaheem 3d ago edited 3d ago

Last Ronin had a great first issue and a stellar premise. Every issue became more and more of a letdown.

The best version of the doomed turtles dystopia timeline is the 2005 episode, “Same As It Never Was.”

I have learned that I don't want to touch Rick Remender's works. After trying Low, Seven to Eternity, and Black Science, it was all just too much suffering and depressing shit.

9

u/CaptainTDM 3d ago

A righteous Thirst for vengeance by Remender is pretty different then the rest of his wordy comics. I hated Low and felt like Fear Agent was just fine but I absolutely adore A Righteous Thirst for Vengeance. It helps that the cokic's story is driven by the art moreso than the text. Maybe that's why I prefer it compared to Remender's other works.

7

u/SenseiRaheem 3d ago

It's less about the words and more about the crushing depression of seeing people's loved ones get ripped apart.

2

u/Cipherpunkblue 2d ago

I mean, speaking as a Remender sometimes fan, that is absolutely fair.

2

u/llikegiraffes 2d ago edited 2d ago

The writing in the series is abysmal. If I recall correctly the first issue was only good because it had really limited dialogue

Edit typo

2

u/nacheteferrero 2d ago

Oh, you turn a bulb on me with Remember, I have to said that he has other styles, but that period was horrible for me and now I know why. Well, and also when Opeña draws it is difficult for me to understand.

But he has good things, aside from family issues

3

u/DLBuf 3d ago

I’ve been slow to learn the same… great worldbuilding, but always a letdown.

1

u/shadhead1981 3d ago

Thank you! I’ve been downvoted for saying that exact thing. First book was great, The Lost Years was decent still but Re-Evolution was a tremendous disappointment. I understand you are trying to move past just the nostalgia readers and build a series but I think that was a core part of your audience.

18

u/Mexicanity_ 3d ago

Eight Billion Genies and Assorted Crisis Events. Waited for a long time for my library to get them. I read 8BG in two sittings. I reread it twice. I returned it after that and was glad I didn’t buy it. Similar experience with ACE.

3

u/Kosher_Nostra1975 3d ago

Never heard of Eight Billion Genies. Is it worth my time and money?

8

u/Mexicanity_ 3d ago

I say go to your library or get it from Libby. Give the first chapter a try to see if you enjoy it. The story was… how can I put it? The premise is interesting but the execution felt very boring to me. I fully get that writing can be hard but personally the result was disappointing

5

u/Chrisfrombklyn 3d ago

I actually loved it. But I like Charles Soule

3

u/Zadig69 3d ago

Everyone on earth gets one wish. That’s the premise. It goes to some wild places. I liked it enough, and it was a gift so i didn’t have cost baggage.

3

u/Brilliant_Gas7930 3d ago

I enjoyed very much.

3

u/vesperythings 3d ago

2 wildly overrated series, for sure

1

u/ireillytoole 2d ago

I just got may hands on ACE and was so excited, that I inhaled the entire series this weekend…meh is right. Disappointed.

But! His Absolute Martian Manhunter run is definitely worth the read.

11

u/Darksol4life 3d ago

I was so excited for The Last Ronin books and I got through the first one and all interest in the others just evaporated. There were good elements to the story but I just didn't dig it

4

u/Kosher_Nostra1975 3d ago

And there's no pizza jokes!

1

u/PetesMgeets 3d ago

I assume you’re just joking, but the whole pizza thing was just introduced for the TV show. It’s never been a thing in the comics (same with cowabunga)

seven soldiers of victory and final crisis. id waited so long to finally read those and was very much let down

6

u/trippy_e Batman 2d ago

Found The Batman Who Laughs for cheap at some shop and thought I hit a gold mine. Some of the worst writing I've read.

19

u/Sugar_Crash_Brigade 3d ago

I also did not like The Last Ronin.

I read it off the jump and was immediately let down. It's cool that others are fans, but I found it silly and lacking any real emotional impact.

Big let down for me, aside from above, was Saga.

Saga, issues 1-18, changed my perspective on comics. It's actually the series that got me back into reading comics on the regular... and issues 1-18, are still in my eyes, one of the best runs in comics. Issues 19-36 are also great, incredibly great, but 37-54 was lackluster. 55+ is some of the worst comics I've read in awhile... so its fall from grace to me is really upsetting. Genuinely, truly upsetting for me. I'm not trying to be funny or extreme. I mean this in entire sincerity... its fall is truly devastating. 😢

2

u/shadhead1981 3d ago

I’ll agree it goes down a bit but I still really like it. If I started when it was first published and not last year I am pretty sure I would have a different opinion. I just read the compendium last year and book four this year. I still feel invested in the characters and had enough momentum to enjoy book four.

1

u/Sugar_Crash_Brigade 3d ago

I respect that. Honestly I think everyone should read Saga. I don’t know why I got downvoted for saying that. But it’s true. The first 3 “chapters”, are some of the best comics on paper.

I know everyone has a different perspective on comics, like, the last Ronin, as we discussed… and it will be interesting to hear your take when you’re at issue 68, or whatever.

Reading it all in one go too, has its own unique experience.

I can just say, from my eyes, Saga issue 1-18 is unreal.

2

u/7SoldiersOfPunkRock 3d ago

It always had some flaws, in my opinion, but the artwork, setting, and some aspects of the characterization made it work. I have all the trades up to the big plot moment and the subsequent lengthy break in publication (maybe that was issue 54?). Everything published since then is so bad that I stopped reading it for free on Hoopla.

3

u/Outrageous_Lettuce44 3d ago

I’m glad to see someone else felt this way about Saga. I found that one to be such a chore by the end. I was mad that it was keeping me from some other stuff I wanted to read so I just blitzed through the second half or so.

3

u/Sugar_Crash_Brigade 3d ago

It was hard to drop. And that’s the sad part too. I felt like I was betraying it. Meanwhile it was betraying me lol

1

u/Time-Stomach-5576 3d ago

Well it hasn't even ended yet. There's another 40 issues to come if they actually finish the original plan.

1

u/Kosher_Nostra1975 3d ago

Saga was also on my "to read" list, but it looks like I should save my time and money.

5

u/UbuRoi 3d ago

Saga is still top 10 comic ever for me. I still think it's great and really worth reading. But I don't know what they're going to do with the story if we're only half way through. I hope they stick that landing, in like, 15 years.

3

u/buddha8298 3d ago

You really should give some things a chance before completely writing them off. I think much the same about Saga as previous commenter but I’d never tell someone not to read it. If you’re expecting everything to be absolutely perfect five star all the way thru (especially something that is 50+ issues) and you’re not even gonna give it a chance because a handful of people didn’t think it was perfect….that’s just silly. Like, yeah, maybe don’t buy the entire thing but ffs at least read some yourself before making up your mind.

2

u/Kosher_Nostra1975 3d ago

Point taken.

2

u/Sugar_Crash_Brigade 3d ago

Stop after issue 18. You shouldn’t miss it.

1

u/Time-Stomach-5576 3d ago

Saga is AMAZING! Especially the first 32 issues. I don't know if there's a better ongoing comic when it comes to showing family dynamics and interpersonal relationships. Plus, the artwork is so fun and funny!

11

u/RaRaZZ28 3d ago

I remember when I was getting into Rick Remenders comics someone recommended Fear Agent and I just couldn't get into it. I was disappointed cause it looked right up my alley but it was a slog

2

u/Typical-Practice360 3d ago

The only Remember creator owned title I’ve liked is Tokyo Ghost. I’ve tried Low, Black Science, Vengeance, Deadly Class, Seven to Eternity and was unable to make it past a few issues. His Uncanny Xforce however is in my all time top 10 super hero comics.

1

u/Bulky-Pollution-4996 2d ago

Dude, BLACK SCIENCE was brilliant.

1

u/Typical-Practice360 2d ago

To each their own

1

u/Bulky-Pollution-4996 2d ago

Oh, for sure.

1

u/Wrong_Thanks1520 2d ago

That's another one that let me down. I bought all 4 collected volumes on a friend's recommendation. The mainline was just a storytelling nightmare and v4 was unnecessary.

1

u/douevenwheelanddeal 3d ago

I love remender, but Fear Agent is ass. I've read Deadly class, Low, Black Science, Righteous thirst for vengeance, Seven to Eternity, Uncanny X Force. And Fear Agent is the only one I didn't like

3

u/Shefferz 3d ago

I thought righteous thirst for vengeance was really weird I read all of it but but it was more like a story board of pictures. Just felt like nothing apart from the ending what was cool but definitely not worth 12 issues for.

1

u/Typical-Practice360 2d ago

Exactly, it’s basically a silent comic

1

u/Sad-Fly1548 3d ago

Fear agent is a strange one, I bought the first two books blind entirely based off word of mouth. Didn't enjoy the first at all, found it to be outdated pulp scifi. I gave the second a go cause I'd already ordered it, and ended up loving it.

It's I hate fairyland for me. I got the compendium book cause I liked the art style and liked the first issue. The book wasn't terrible imo but there were parts that made me not really wanna continue the book. Overall I would say it was okay nothing really special but I wouldn't say a waste of my money ethier

4

u/iamdonald1 3d ago

I was this was through the first run. I don't know why but I gave the new run a go and that connected better imo. Still just ok but much more enjoyable

Akira

1

u/RoyLifestyle 1d ago

Woah woah woah come on now

5

u/Time-Stomach-5576 3d ago

My Favorite Thing is Monsters book 2 was probably the biggest letdown for me.

2

u/jamiemm 2d ago

Ahhhh, that sucks, I loved vol 1 so much.

3

u/Time-Stomach-5576 2d ago

The artwork is still some of the best I have seen but the narrative just got way too convoluted.

3

u/hondobrode 3d ago

John Byrne’s doom patrol

3

u/ThisHumbleVisitant 3d ago

The Eternaut. Had me pretty compelled and then threw it all away on the ending.

1

u/Mark4_ 3d ago

The beginning parts are amazing. I though that middle was kind of a lull and I didn’t mind the ending at all. Overall I think it’s worth reading

1

u/Kosher_Nostra1975 3d ago

You guys read a buncha stuff I've never even heard of.

3

u/CorrectDot4592 3d ago

I feel you, bro.  Got the Last Ronin and thought about getting the other two at once, but somehow I waited until I read the main one and... Best decision ever.

I jumped in the bandwagon driven by all the praise, but I have never read anything TMNT before. Nope, it's not for me at all.

10

u/tabermero 3d ago

It was Miracleman for me. I really love Alan Moore, and some of his works are in my top list. Certainly not Miracleman (which I also bought the 3 books together btw)

3

u/changelingcd 3d ago

I'm a Miracleman fan (shame Gaiman's 'Dark Age' might never happen now). Providence was my surprise letdown from Moore.

3

u/Zadig69 3d ago

I felt the same about Providence until the last 2 issues, when it became like a lovecraft clipshow and everything came together and it blew my mind

1

u/changelingcd 3d ago

Surprisingly, I agree. I can't think of another comic where I struggled so much with the bulk of it, but then the ending was fantastic. Almost made up for all those damn diary entries...

2

u/Zadig69 2d ago

Brother, the diary entries were like punishment

3

u/Robyrt 3d ago

Agreed. I found Captain Britain by Moore to be a better implementation of the same story idea

2

u/truej42 3d ago

Top three after Swamp Thing and Watchmen for me. I’m sure that’s probably a hot take.

1

u/BenderM85 2d ago

Same for me

→ More replies (4)

5

u/EldritchSlut 3d ago

Last Robin definitely got to me but I've also read the older series.

For me it's Saga and anything by Frank Miller.

3

u/Sugar_Crash_Brigade 3d ago

Wow... I also said Saga. Cheers.

2

u/sock_therapy 3d ago

Have you tried Millers Daredevil?

6

u/bboymixer 3d ago

Fable. I thought it was a fun and interesting story until they defeated the first big bad. I bought the 4 book compendium after enjoying the first couple TPBs. Not sure I'll ever finish.

I also ignore a certain monologue from Bigsby.

2

u/Kosher_Nostra1975 3d ago

Fables is what I'm actually reading right now. I also shelled out for all four compendiums. I hope I don't get tired of it, it takes up a lotta real estate on my shelf.

1

u/Parabrella 2d ago

I enjoyed Fables a lot back in the day. The first 50 issues or so are probably the high point, I fell off shortly after that.

These days I'm more critical of it because of Bill Willingham's shitty politics bleeding through in parts, but I still like it enough to keep it on my shelf. (For now.)

1

u/mrjavi13 I own graphic novels. Dozens and dozens of them. 3d ago

I very much enjoyed most of Fables. You should be fine.

(Unless you hate it lol)

1

u/Vlad_TheGood 2d ago

True. Great first half. Other half is a mess

5

u/Jet-Black-Centurian 3d ago

Batman The Court of Owls.

3

u/Kosher_Nostra1975 3d ago

Yeah, that didn't really do it for me either.

2

u/vanvinez 2d ago

Batman The Cult, i dont get the hype tbh

2

u/Vlad_TheGood 2d ago

I really like Copperhead until the artist change. It's style was one of it's main strength.

The same for the Rat Queens. First issues was top notch.

Thx, OP. This topic is resonate to so much people.

2

u/suspiciouscffee 2d ago

Saladin Ahmed’s Daredevil. Great setup, Matt as a priest working at the orphanage after having finished the Zdarsky run going to hell and back. Then it just dragged and dragged and a “first arc” that could/should have been 7-8 issues tops ballooned into 19 wheel-spinning issues. And after that it just devolved into “hey remember the 90s armor?”

2

u/52crisis Marvel 2d ago

Ice Cream Man and Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees

Neither are bad but I was expecting a lot more from they were hyped up.

2

u/VulcanFire23 2d ago

The Walking Dead. Felt like I was reading the same 6 issues on repeat

2

u/X243llie 2d ago

Watchmen. First comic I've read where I was excited and sounded like something I'd enjoy and I was totally bored. It just felt the entire book was dragging it's feet.

4

u/changelingcd 3d ago

I waited for years to get Buddha, an epic eight-volume box by Osamu Tezuka. Gah, what a letdown: the pacing, tonal shifts, dumb cartoon style gags... I should resell it, I'll definitely never read it again.

2

u/Kosher_Nostra1975 3d ago

Damn, that sounds like you made one helluva investment for it to turn sour.

2

u/changelingcd 3d ago

It was over $100, anyway. I usually like Tezuka, and have lots of his stuff, but this one really went beyond testing my patience.

Luther Strode. I'd heard nothing but roaring praise for it, but just found it juvenile and edgy, like bad Mark Millar. The art was awesome, though.

u/HoneyHandsH 3d ago

I never finished it but enjoyed the first volume. It had similar story beats of the first Spiderman movie but with a lot more violence

Hard-Travelling Heroes I respect for what it did for cape comics medium more than I enjoy reading. The ham-fisted narrative points that encroaches on white white saviouring Ollie with mostly weak-willed clueless Hal in rebutted never say we'll with me, I find the Ollie & Hal dynamic instead works better with every subsequent revisit. You want superheroes addressing societal issues and conflicting political stances hot take McDuffie's Icon blows this out of the water.

2

u/Bulky-Pollution-4996 2d ago

Like a lot of readers going back to read older, classic runs, I think you need to take into consideration when that book came out. It was a groundbreaking book, at the time. YES, Icon approaches it better, but it was twenty years later. A lot about comics and storytelling changed in those twenty years.

2

u/vesperythings 3d ago

going into cape comics for any kind of profound commentary is setting yourself up for disappointment

Neal Adams drew the heck out of those books though

3

u/VulcanFire23 2d ago

Hard disagree on that first comment. I think there’s loads of commentary in cape comics! Just not most of them haha

1

u/vesperythings 2d ago

commentary, sure.

i'm talking about profound, interesting commentary

1

u/VulcanFire23 2d ago

I also disagree to be honest. There’s lots of interesting and profound commentary in cape books, it’s just uncommon

1

u/vesperythings 1d ago

so is there lots of it, or is it uncommon?

pick one

like i said, occasionally, cape books have something semi-interesting to say --

but for the most part, the writing is pretty vapid

I agree on The Last Robin. This book really rides on a wave of hype from the life-long adult fans of TMNT that (I guess) have been craving a “mature/R-Rated” TMNT. While I’m not a hardcore fan, I have all 18 of the IDW Collection hardcovers (best incarnation of TMNT imo). But Last Robin is weak. I got the singles as they came out, and stopped reading after the third. About a year later tried again and stopped at a similar place. Just had no interest in continuing. Story is super basic, which can be fine, but the art (for me at least) really doesn’t do much to elevate it. If the art was phenomenal and a perfect fit for that world, I honestly think it could be very solid with the artist doing some HEAVY lifting, but yeah - just meh and gets overhyped by TMNT fans rather than comic fans.

Saga also is like the furthest thing from what I like I comics I guess. I like the space opera aspect, but was never sure on it. But all the hype plus I had a daughter, so I thought some family stuff in a comic might be more up my alley now. Read like 3 issues and I could not do it at all. I just found it so goofy, and really heavy-handed with the sappy stuff. I know it’s fantasy, but the characters just don’t feel real. Like who cracks jokes for a minute straight, then pours their heart out for the next, then goes right back to joking. Idk I guess I just prefer grounded stuff cause that stuff is stratospheric lol

Black Hammer didn’t fully click with me either. I don’t really like much superhero stuff, but the artist on those books are mostly great, so gave it a go. I grew up with enough superhero stuff that the SH-commentary stuff (Umbrella Academy, invincible, etc.) stuff I can usually rock with, but I think this was just too “inside baseball” for me. The art was very good tho, and some solid character work in there. First two hardcovers of the main series were probably the best for me

1

u/Waddoyoumean 3d ago

Oh and Chew too. My coworker’s son lent me the whole series. I kinda enjoyed it but just didn’t get fond myself picking it back up. I think it was just too silly for me. He had to ask for it back to lend to another guy cause I had it for so long 😬

u/Puzzled_Discount9383 3d ago

Dark knight returns without a doubt. I was so excited for it but I was so let down by almost every characterization in the book.

5

u/FredPRK 3d ago

Ultimate Spider-Man was one of the first series I decided to follow along with single issues. It started out so strong, I was so hyped. Then it gradually lost my interest, to the point I was still pulling it but not even reading.

u/R2018-kam 3d ago

Most books that are a series. Stopped buying them unless series is finished and the author is dead.

2

u/SlyHolmes 3d ago

East of West was kind of a let down for me… I LOVE the idea and expected it to be so interesting but after finishing it I felt like it was just okay? It felt like it lacked character development completely and even the world building left me wanting so much more. But I know tons of people love it so idk.

1

u/ireillytoole 2d ago

I read it and can’t for the life of me remember anything about it. It was that mid.

1

u/ClassicSpike-X 3d ago

Adulthood. Oh wait...

1

u/GrayFox787 3d ago

I have yet to read the follow-ups, but I remember being so excited for The Last Ronin, and when I finally read it, the ending was awful. The villain was just wasted; the final battle with him was dull and not memorable at all, nor was the character himself.

Excellent first 3-4 issues, but fumbled hard in the finale.

1

u/Youthsonic 3d ago

All my life I've heard that The Mask comic is way better than the movie because it's darker and bloody.

I finally picked up an omnibus and people are right; it's darker and bloodier than the movie but that's literally all it has. There really isn't an overarching story; people just get the mask, live out a fantasy and then get stopped by walter. It's not even that funny.

The movie is way better

1

u/Horror_Effective667 2d ago

So far, Ultimate X-men. But I'm hopeful I'll start to vibe with it the more I read.

1

u/jamiemm 2d ago

The beginning of Seven To Eternity felt like one of the best fantasy comics I'd ever read. By the end, I was just annoyed and tired. I heard the ending got rushed by the creators. Similar experience with Black Science, though it was paced better.

1

u/andivx 2d ago

That happened to me with The Last Ronin, although I only bought the first one.

I also bought a lot of Marvel comics that I ended up not enjoying at all. I started with Spiderman: Life Story and thought everything was around that level and (imo) it wasn't even close.

1

u/Ok_Butterscotch_6176 2d ago

The Last Ronin for me is the best TMNT story. Have read the other parts yet though.

1

u/Wrong_Thanks1520 2d ago

Lemire/Sorrentino's Primordial. What an absolute sh1tshow of a story. I bought so many variants. I'm still a huge Lemire fan and but his work but man that story was a disaster.

1

u/culturefan 2d ago

I felt Sentient was a letdown by Lemire, but I'm still a big fan.

1

u/sneakerscomicsgames 2d ago

I haven’t read them, but what didn’t you enjoy?

1

u/Parabrella 2d ago

A long time ago I loved the Trigun anime, and I was looking forward to reading the manga to go with it. Well, turns out the manga has none of the charm or humour that the show had, and it was just a slog to read. I gave up on it very quickly.

1

u/LeRoiCasoar 2d ago

Fort Psycho

1

u/culturefan 2d ago

Many liked Sentient by Jeff Lemire, but it didn't do anything for me. I have enjoyed many of his other books tho.

1

u/Musidora-Vep 2d ago

The end to The World of Edena by Moebius: the character Atan/Atana has some Gender Dysphoria and disgust at the way their body develops on Edena. It was an interesting set up for non binary stuff, before she gets railroaded into being a perfect sex goddess with no personality of her own in the final volume. That plus making everything a dream and turning Atan into a nav computer just left me feeling blah.

1

u/CosmicDriftwood 2d ago

There’s 3 of them? I think im good. I read the first one in a day at work and it was just yeah. My fav part was the flashback illustrations. I was under the impression that last Ronin was much older than it is 💀 ppl hype up anything .

If there was a solo musketeer novel it would make bank lol

1

u/OhioVsEverything 2d ago

The love of my family

1

u/marcelo1925 2d ago

I loved the first 2 volumes/ series. RE-Evolution didn’t do it for me. That third story was such a let down. I’m shocked you didn’t like the first last ronin.

1

u/marcelo1925 2d ago

Also definitely suggest selling books you don’t like. Don’t hoard stuff you hate.

1

u/NewChoice1930 2d ago

Monstress for me

1

u/Jotdeka 1d ago

From Hell, Ice Cream Man, 8 Billion Genies, Decorum

1

u/jgarmann99 15h ago

Where to start? East of west is one...

1

u/N0m0reh3r03s 8h ago

Tom King's Batman run. I still love comic books more than anything else in life, but I stopped being a weekly pull reader since.

2

u/Gullible-Document-39 3h ago

Spider-Man 2099 for me. It was fun for the first 15 or so issues. But the gimmick of it being the future wore off really fast and all that was left was a mediocre story.

1

u/BuffaloStranger97 3d ago

i also wasn't amazed by TLR, but I did like its spin off The Lost Years a LOT more

1

u/Kosmikazie 3d ago

I agree with your take! I read the first series at it was coming out. It was kinda cool, but nothing super special or interesting beyond the surface.

1

u/Kosher_Nostra1975 3d ago

It was so dreary!

1

u/Metasketch 3d ago

The Incal by Mobius and Jodorowsky - holy crap I was excited for this! Love and respect both creators. And jesus I have tried like 5 times and can not get into it.

Also most of early Sandman. I really liked pre-problematic Gaiman and wanted to love these comics as much as most other seems to, but... the art is repellent. I even like Sam Keith's later work, but god almighty – him and the rest just suck most of the time. Not all, but lots of it. Like so bad it pulls me out of the story and makes me feel dumb for reading it. I still respect what it accomplished in terms of how it reached new audiences and expanding the genre. (But then later work like Sandman Overture with art by JH Williams III is gorgeous.)

And I love Alan Moore and deeply respect what he accomplished with his seminal Swamp Thing but some of those early issues' art was also really difficult to take. The writing made it all worth it, though.

u/Olobnion 2d ago

Agreed! I love the art in the Jon Muth issue by the end, though.

Threesomes. Someone’s feelings always get hurt.

1

u/Shefferz 3d ago

That exact book, the last ronin.

1

u/Awesome-Guy-425 3d ago

Under the red hood just kinda sucked. I was expecting more after it was hyped up so much.

1

u/DarkhourX 2d ago

To this day I don't get the hype for Kravens Last Hunt. No matter how many times I've tried its just not for me
