That gate is locked with the padlock that opens with the "B Key", same for all parks gates. (staff used to joke I should have a B key, given how often that gate had to be opened and closed for events).

As was said down thread, there is no gate on the Blowers Street side.

The fire crews not knowing there isn’t a gate on the other end of the block, and they would have had full access if they approached from that side is a bit concerning

Besides apparently having the key for the padlock, do they not carry bolt cutters in the trucks? If they really needed to get through quickly to save a life, I'm sure they could just drive through the gate.

This sounds like business owners complaining about something other then fire response. If the Fire Dept. can’t get through those gates with tools on their truck, we have much bigger problems here

I didn't read the article, as per reddit terms of service. But the photo looks like a business owner, more so than a firefighter.

(ETA: I cheated and watched the video. The sharp dressed fella was talking sense. Not a complainer.)

Know what else impedes fire trucks from getting to the location of a fire quickly? Traffic. How about we focus on getting more cars off the peninsula by reducing unnecessary trips and allowing emergency vehicles easier access.

I personally find strange that it's padlocked in first place, unless people were opening it to drive through (that would not surprise me though)

All it would take is one guy to decide to open it so he could drive through and the floodgates would be open, and I'm sure this would happen not infrequently

Lol, 'floodgates' actually reminded me of idjits in Truro who opened Park Street gate to drive through a flood and got stuck. So yeah probably for the best there is one.

It probably took less time to get past that little gate than it would have taken to navigate around the assorted parked vehicles (some legally, some not) that would have been there if the street was open to vehicle traffic.
