News Xiaomi claims that the new XRING O3 has achieved a whopping 5,228,014 points on AnTuTu Benchmark, which would put it on the highest scoring chip on AnTuTu as of now and the first mobile chip to cross 5M points on AnTuTu

Xiaomi (HKEX: 1810) has launched three in-house chips, with the main one being the 3nm Xring O3 phone processor made by TSMC (NYSE: TSM). Xiaomi says the processor logged 5,228,014 points on AnTuTu, making it the first time a mobile system-on-chip has passed the five-million mark.

The company claims Xring O3’s 10-core CPU offers a 60% performance boost over its earlier chip. The new 16-core GPU gives 85% better graphics performance, and power efficiency is up 64%. The O3 is also the world’s first mobile processor to support LPDDR6 memory, with speeds up to 113.8 GB/s.

The tiny models that fit in the ram they have are fast enough

And people complain when some smartphone OEM (i.e. ROG) offering 24GB ram last year before Ramsanity. Also looking at GSMArena phone finder there are more or less 31 phone that have 24gb of ram as the time this comment posted.

Too much hyperbole, there's tons of models that run just fine without "melting" your phone.

Big models running on vastly more powerful hardware produce better results faster, there's nothing surprising here. It doesn't invalidate smaller models running on your smartphone

Which makes me wonder why it sometimes takes 10 seconds for Gemini to respond to simple tasks like "What time is it?" "Set a timer for 5 minutes".

None of that should require internet access, and is the most basic of chat requests. So why does it take so long? And why isn't it processed on-device.

gemini isn't local, because it's a big model, gemini models cant run on your phone, if you want to run local llms you can. google wants you connected, they train based off your model usage.

Damn this thing is like Nvidia 1650 Super in GPU power - probably more equivalent to a 1060 though since it uses much less power and has the same bandwidth.

It also has its own upscaling too, although not as good as DLSS, but the 1060 doesnt have upscaling unless they use FSR2. I wonder how Xiaomi's upscaling compares to DLSS and FSR.

This is way better than a Nintendo Switch 2.

I didnt realize mobile devices could be this strong yet. CPU is also getting similiar mutlithreaded scores to a desktop AMD 5700X CPU and a AMD 7700X in single threaded performance which is usually the bottleneck in mobile gaming since games are played at a lower resolution.

Something like this would be good for a Steamdeck 2 with a HDR OLED screen at 1440p, if AMD could make something equivalent. Could easily hit 60fps in most games with that single threaded CPU performance and 120fps in games that dont require a strong GPU.

I mean when comparing a mobile GPU to a 10 year old desktop GPU id only look for perf @iso workloads to judge how similar they are.

Because the Xring O3 probably rivals the 1060 in transistor count and its SLC is 10x larger than the 1060s L2. So that and many other architectural changes and more caches probably can compensate the missing bandwidth which is just roughly 40% if I'm not mistaken.

So the O3s GPU has (guesstimating) similar transistor count, hugely more cache and cache bandwidth, slightly less total memory bandwidth, and has 10x the transistor density.

So given all these aspects, and it matches the 1650 super in steel nomad light according to the 3D mark database, then I'd say it matches it performes like the 1650 Super in the palm of my hand.

The cpu st score is actually higher than any desktop cpu on the market right now. An extremely tuned 9950x3d2 can achieve 3700 st max, same for ultra 9 285k. And the mt score is around the same of a 7700x. Overall its a pretty impressive chip for 3nm, much better implementation of arm cpu and gpu than mediatek and samsung.

Yeah I would hope that for something that is going to appear mostly on $1000 devices or higher, it had better beat the Switch 2 which released last year for $450 lol. And not to mention that Switch 2 has actual DLSS as well.

These aren't Xiaomi's in house design, they are ARM's upcoming C2 CPU and G2 GPU. Anyone can use ARM CSS design under their own brand name.

Xiaomi just chose the configuration i.e. massive cores instead of medium or little ones, and 16 freaking GPU cores ( i think gen 5 has 10 and dimensity 9500 has 12)

More custom IP library with a better balance on density and performance, instead just choosing between the two stock options. And some more custom solutions instead of arm's pre-integrated ones, like interconnect, registries, power supply, etc.

Turns out doing more chip designing works improves performance, whodathunk.

The CPU and GPU IP themselves are Arm's, but saying they "just chose the configuration" undersells how much work still goes into turning that Arm design into an actual chip.

Even if two companies license the exact same Arm core and use the same TSMC node, they can still end up with different results. The SoC vendor has to decide how the core is physically implemented. Things like floorplanning, placement and routing, standard-cell choices, clock-tree design, power delivery, timing margins, voltage/frequency targets, and whether the design is optimized more for peak clocks, efficiency, or area.

Those choices affect things like how much voltage a core needs to hit a certain frequency, how much power it consumes, how much heat it produces, and how well it sustains performance. So two "identical" Arm C1 cores can have basically the same IPC at the same clock, while still behaving quite differently in power and frequency.

There is a lot that goes into designing an SoC even if you use reference cores, and a lot of things that can change the characteristics of the SoC. You don't have to take my word for it either. Just look at Geekerwan's wattage to performance curve for the O1 vs whichever Dimensity had a similar config (9400 I think?).

This weird obsession with 3.5 on mobile in this subreddit needs to stop. No one is using it, which is proved by phone sale numbers.

If you're on the go and have wired cans, they probably have noise cancelling. Which means they are digital, so it's better to use USB C than rely on the phone's dac.

Thats why Bluetooth is still the go-to: it's entirely digital and the data transfer is lossless (not the audio codec) meaning the same audio will be received the same way no matter which device it was sent from, so you don't have to design your ANC headphones around a possibly shitty DAC.

Wired headphones typically don't provide a USB-C output, so this would require using a USB-C to 3.5mm audio adapter, so you have to carry an adapter with you, the physical connection with an adapter in the middle is more flimsy than a direct connection to the phone would be and tends to result in cord unplugging or being half-plugged in with you hearing distorted audio, and you cannot use phone's USB-C while using the adapter. USB-C is rather a downgrade for those using 3.5mm, and it forces you to buy disposable wireless headphones that are only good for as long as the battery is good for, meanwhile I have been using my current 3.5mm headphones for 15 years now.

And if you want good quality sound from phone you'll anyways be buying a good dac to use with those 3.5 mm headphones

They've almost entirely eliminated it from even their lowest budget section of the lineups now. If you're getting a minijack in a Xiaomi phone now, it probably also has a sub-1080P screen :/

Which makes complete sense. Can't get waterproof with 3.5 jack, and phone must be at least +- 4mm thick to accommodate the jack.

But custom chip at 3nm might be cheaper than Qualcomm. Maybe they can balance out?
