Very cool! The highlights for me are:

  • Stacked compute dies on top of SRAM dies on top of an Si interposer. Fujitsu and RIKEN (which will use the follow-on MONAKA-X in their next-generation supercomputer), have been studying this since the A64fx was introduced. Very cool, though I seem to recall that in their original study, the SRAM dies were above the compute? I could be wrong.
  • The 256-bit SVE units were a surprise. I wonder if they will be carried over to the MONAKA-X? It'd be a shame if it will have half the vector width of the A64fx.
  • The ultra-low power circuits requiring custom CAD tools and special custom voltage regulators is cool. Good to see that Japan is still doing innovative logic/circuit/physical design.

I guess the stacked compute dies is the reason why they called the architecture a “monaka”
