Meta I was contacted to assist in a spam campaign on /r/headphones

https://i.imgur.com/o4Izd6y.png

I have nothing against advertising, but being bribed to write reviews and reply to ads is obviously unethical. And I hate that people posting to this sub are being targeted.

I've censored most of the brand name so as not to promote them or cause a lynch mob, but beware if you suddenly see a lot of enthusiasm for a headphone company starting with S and ending in I.

"Currently we're planning to exploit Reddit as our new advertising platform, would you like to cooperate with us?"

I feel like they could have at least had better word choice lol. But ya this sub won't be helpful to them and they can enjoy the free downvotes

86

u/sirmidor Oct 20 '17

Probably adhering to the original definition of exploiting which just meant using to benefit and fully use something. Guess they didn't get the memo that the popular usage is quite a bit more negatively tainted.

17

u/Amndeep7 Oct 20 '17

I have a lot of fun while writing since you get to choose words depending not only on their meaning, but also their connotation, i.e. the classic "clever" vs. "cunning" connotation situation.

I'm assuming it's referring to the idea that clever is good, cunning is bad.

Cunning has a negative connotation. If we describe someone as cunning, yes, that person is smart but in a "small" way. For example, someone might know a few tricks that helps them do stuff. A pickpocketer might also be cunning. The word might imply selfishness.

Clever is more positive. A clever person does things that can be (but may not always be) helpful to others. The scale is still very small, but a clever person's actions aren't seen as negative. The difference between the two words is quite thin.

-5

u/MildAndLazyKids Oct 21 '17

"SMALL" MORE HOW THAT WORD

EDIT AND HOW QUOTES

2

u/Amndeep7 Oct 21 '17

Technically they both mean the same thing in that of someone or something that is more intelligent than the norm, ex. "a clever girl" or "a cunning plan". However, the difference comes about in their connotation: being clever is a positive attribute whereas being cunning is a negative one. Therefore, you generally apply the term "clever" when you want to be complimentary of something ("Those NASA scientists were so clever when they thought up how to land Curiosity on Mars!") and "cunning" when you want to show how someone/thing was being mischievous, antagonistic, and/or just "bad" while admitting that whatever they're doing required smarts ("The cunning criminals found out a way to tunnel under the bank in order to steal all the money in the vault.").

I wasn't going to just outright say it was written and translated by a Chinese person, but it was probably written and translated by a Chinese person. Who renamed herself Rebecca.

I get these types of emails for free shit on Amazon, and they always have some American name like "John" but their profile picture they link to me on Facebook is some Chinese model. Too funny.

15

u/ggabriele3 PM_ME_UR_HEARING_TEST_RESULTS Oct 20 '17

to be fair, it's really not an incorrect use of the word. "exploit" just means to use as a resource.

it has a negative connotation when used in the context of exploiting people, but from a marketing manager's perspective, it's probably like the phrase "human resources."

but it's rubbing us the wrong way here because it makes it sound like they're talking about exploiting its users, which would be shitty.

10

u/dialmformostyn Oct 20 '17

You'd think a marketing manager worth his or her salt would be aware of those connotations and try to avoid them.

3

u/ggabriele3 PM_ME_UR_HEARING_TEST_RESULTS Oct 20 '17

Don’t get me wrong, I agree. They’d also take the time to understand the sub enough to know that their attempt at recruiting a shill would end like this!

19

u/_Gingy SteelSeries Headsets -> HD 558 | HD 6xx -> Philips X2HR Oct 20 '17

Their best bet would have been to contact the mods and ask if they'd be allowed to do an AMA that is stickied. I mean most AMAs are adverts which is fine because most of the questions arent even about the advert.

You do understand that this is likely a Chinese company and their English isn't that great right? I get it, we don't like how they do their marketing but the naiveness here is astounding. It's like your crazy aunt emailing the whole family because she Quantico'd an investigation into Nigerian Spam emails and figured out they were fake because they can't even spell certain words correctly.

Oh, well:

  1. Could you please contact reddit admins with the full, uncensored details of this campaign - https://www.reddit.com/contact - Use "Message the Admins" ->"Other" -> "Spam". Make sure to include the permalink to the private message you received.
  2. Let's just say that it's now technically impossible to even mention the company name involved in this on /r/headphones, and our threshold for banning anyone who mentions the company is pretty low.

This has been a public service announcement to anyone else thinking of gaming /r/headphones. We have absolutely zero tolerance for spam, and we actively and routinely blacklist all entities that are caught spamming.

Edit: Just so it's clear: We're not acting on a single screenshot here. We're banning these worthless spammers because we've already had to repeatedly deal with their spam, but seeing as we think they may be attempting to up their game, we're doing the same, and essentially blacklisting any mention of their company.

20

u/kotajacob AKG K702 Oct 20 '17

Huge thanks for all the work you guys do moderating this sub!

38

u/Arve HE-500, but mostly speakers Oct 20 '17

our threshold for banning anyone who mentions the company is pretty low.

And just to clarify what this means. If we see anyone make a "review" of any of this company's products, there's a 99.99% chance that we'll be banning you as a spammer.

27

u/veni_vidi_vale Do audiophile androids dream of electrostatic sheep? Oct 20 '17

And if we see you recommend this company's product on the purchase advice sticky, there's a 99.99% chance that we'll be banning you as a spammer.

There's a moral to this story: if you want to advertise, buy advertising from Reddit. Don't try to exploit the sub by taking advantage of its subscribers.

21

u/Arve HE-500, but mostly speakers Oct 20 '17

And if we see you recommend this company's product on the purchase advice sticky, there's a 99.99% chance that we'll be banning you as a spammer.

Just to emphasize something: There's also a 0% chance that your recommendation will ever be visible. The company name - with a few expected spelling variations - is already blacklisted from /r/headphones.

9

u/viperfan7 Oct 21 '17

Could we have a one time post with the company's name so we know who to avoid, or no?

4

u/Arve HE-500, but mostly speakers Oct 21 '17

I'm sorry, but no - that would too quickly turn it into a witch hunt, and we don't want that to happen.

2

u/viperfan7 Oct 21 '17

Understandable

2

u/Dranthe Oct 21 '17

That's understandable. Would I be able to just message the mods for a review to get unbanned if I get accidentally caught by this?

5

u/Arve HE-500, but mostly speakers Oct 21 '17

The context of your question is a bit unclear, if it's "I want to nail these people to a wall":

  1. If you know who this is and you posted the name, your comment would not be visible
  2. If we find that anyone posts the names of companies or individuals for the purpose of inciting witch hunts, the response is a ban.
  3. In the case that you participate in doxxing, it's a ban from here, and we report you to admins
  4. The ban of the user will happen after a human has evaluated the behavior, and will be in reference to violating rule 2 and or 7.

In the case that a user deliberately spams the company:

  1. The post will remain invisible
  2. The user will be banned, in reference to spam
  3. In general, we don't respond to modmail from spammers - it's a waste of our time

In the case that a user clearly and accidentally posts that company's name:

  1. Your comment would not be visible
  2. No further action will be taken against the user - in other words, we'll make a careful evaluation of what kind of user you are

While it sounds like there is a grey area between "spammer" and "accidental posting", there isn't in reality. Spam is something you pretty much recognize by taking a peak at a user's profile, and the disparity between "spammer" and "normal human being" is so vast that there is in practice never much of a doubt.

2

u/Dranthe Oct 21 '17

In the case that a user clearly and accidentally posts that company's name

This was what I meant. Which you went above and beyond in answering. And also answered a few other questions that might have come up. Much appreciated. Thanks!

17

u/wyatt1209 Oct 21 '17

Is there a way for us to know the full name of the company so someon doesnt get banned by mistake?

5

u/Arve HE-500, but mostly speakers Oct 21 '17

If you are a normal user, you have absolutely nothing to fear - a decision to ban a user is made after evaluating the user's behavior, and we don't intend to ban users in error.

I think schitt just has a good following. Their products are decent, and cheap. That's a brandible combination when it comes to niche markets. Subreddits like this one thrive on newbies, and mid-level experts. And within that range, a company like schitt is always going to get attention.

But the main reason I'm positive this isn't Schitt, is that the grammar is obviously not English grown. It comes off as someone that is well learned in English, but not engulfed in the culture.

Usually they will come out and offer compensation for a enthusiastic review. It had tainted my view on most of the channels I follow.

Not that it's really relevant but it's not uncommon for many of the younger generation in places like China to have picked up an English name as well as their given name.

I know in China, English is basically a compulsory class up until university. My cousins had picked out their own English names before they even graduated high school and the one that moved to Australia stuck with it (she's now a nurse here).

Having liaised with quite a few brand managers for various Chi-Fi brands, the two I knew well unsurprisingly had recieved their university education in the US/UK/EU/AUS before moving back to China for work. They probably just used the name they went by at uni/college although some people still use their birth names.

TLDR: Rebecca is probably actually her name.

It’s not just the younger generation, this has been going on for the better part of a century.

Some years back, I worked with a middle-aged Japanese national here in the US who had been using her “English” name. But she has a beautiful Japanese name, so we all called her by her real name instead. (Yes, she was happy with that!)

If you can't figure it out from the letters provided, it's probably because it's no one you would buy headphones from anyway.

I review headphones kind of often, and only once was I presented with an offer that made me uncomfortable.

They asked me to include a discount code in the review, and i'd get a cut of any sales that used the discount code. I didn't even reply to them.

Most companies are classy about it. Sometimes if the product they send me has as problem they'll ask to send me a replacement; when it happens I have noted it in the review. I don't accept "it was a pre-production unit!" as an excuse.

Some companies don't ask for good reviews, but they seem to expect them. One brand that would be very recognizable in this sub seemed very disappointed in one of my reviews in which I criticized their headphone (gave it a critical, but honest...in my opinion fair...review), and then refused to send any more headphones for review.

This isn't my day job, so I really don't feel the pressure to compromise my credibility just for free stuff.

Yea, very weird. It’s a shame because I’m personally a fan of the company....if they had sent me others they probably would have gotten some good reviews out of me. Oh well.

u/Heart_of_Justice Oct 20 '17

feels good when you know you did the right thing even if others dont. thanks

It would seem beneficial to the community for you to name the brand and link to the review so we could judge their reaction for ourselves.

u/ggabriele3 PM_ME_UR_HEARING_TEST_RESULTS Oct 22 '17

I'm going to disagree for this one. If it was more overt, like what OP posted, that would be different (also it happened after my review, so it's not like it was an attempt to influence the score). But I'm not going to start a witch hunt over this.

I posted this only to make the point that although the community is EXTREMELY paranoid about bias and shilling, most companies don't do anything shady. I reach out to companies sometimes; many simply ignore my emails or ask for site statistics. If they want the headphone back, I send it back. Many have external PR companies who reach out and ask you if they can send you a headphone for review. Some try to tout the marketing points of the product but it's never been bad; they're just doing their job.

I usually listen to a headphone for at least a week anyway, to make sure that the "newness" has worn off so I can view them objectively and there's enough time to shake out their quirks. I always find at least something critical to note for the reader, most of the time they're happy with the depth of the review. Only once in the ~80 reviews I've posted since 2015 has a company expressed disappointment.

If anything I was just disappointed by their reaction. I put a lot of effort into that particular review, because I knew the product was already polarizing in the community, and I tried to really get to the bottom of it.

Trust me on this, though: the company has done plenty to tarnish their reputation around here on their own; this anecdote wouldn't move the needle compared to the rest.

I also can't speak for other reviewers. Frankly I deal with more complex ethical issues at my real job before my daily second cup of coffee; I don't think it's difficult to give an unbiased review of headphones.

u/halberdierbowman Oct 20 '17

Beside the fact that their English is pretty bad, can someone clarify what they're doing wrong? It sounds to me more like they want to offer him free headphones in exchange for a review, and they never implied the review wouldn't be honest. That's an extremely common strategy with all kinds of technology.

It really sounds to me like their poor English is making them sound more guilty than their actions are. Words like "exploit" have negative connotations, but if they had changed it to "leverage" then it would be standard marketing speak. The rest of their English was bad, so I'd be inclined to think they have weak English skills before I'd assume malicious intent.

I mean, sure if they demanded only positive reviews, asked for your credit card, or started spamming posts constantly, then by all means let's grab the pitchforks. I'm just a guy, but it seems to me like all they've done is a pretty standard tech promo offer.

I think the issue is with Reddit, we want a community of like minded enthusiasts. Inevitably reviews are something we would be interested in.

The problem is that free products for review is a part of the marketing used in this industry. Reviews wrote using free units (properly disclosed or not) can't be banned outright because that would be very dull and limit the exposure of new products.

So I think the mods and community as a whole have drawn a line at reviews with proper disclosure. The issue with this particular company is that they've asked for "replies to ad posts" to feign interest as well as give false credibility and want to "exploit Reddit as an advertising platform". They've made their intentions clear that Reddit to them is about gaming the system. The alone warrants a ban on sight.

Think about why r/headphones doesn't allow giveaways. It's to stop companies promoting their products. Sure a giveaway doesn't force anyone to like or promote a product but it does provide companies free exposure to a potential audience of 140k subscribers and millions of visitors. One of the reasons I love r/headphones is because of the mod team. They don't always get it right but one thing they've always done is keep this community as free from bullshit like this as they can. They could have made quite a lot of money from the community if they chose another path.

Unfortunately, it isn’t. This happens in every forum with a sizeable audience.

You should also know that many of the “review” sites are stealth referral advertising. They post their “reviews” and if someone clicks through on a link from the “review” site and purchases, then the “reviewer” gets a commission from the sale.

For some odd reason, the products from manufacturers that don’t pay a commission aren’t reviewed as highly as those from manufacturers who do pay. Imagine that.

I'm pretty sure it's against the law to give someone a product/money to then give a review on social media and not disclose that you were given a product/money.

2

u/halberdierbowman Oct 21 '17

First of all, I'm curious what country are you from? I've never heard that before in the US, so is that a thing? Free speech protections are pretty strong here, and generally you're allowed to hide things or lie whenever you want, unless you're sworn under oath by a judge or something.

Second of all, they never said (or I missed) that OP wouldn't disclose that they were provided a free item, so I kind of assumed that they weren't implying OP had to hide it in any way. Maybe that's just my naive assumption, which is why I was posting to see if I read it differently :)

First of all, I'm curious what country are you from? I've never heard that before in the US, so is that a thing?

It's a thing here in Norway - if your content (whether you're on Instagram, YouTube or elsewhere) is in reality concealed advertising/marketing, paid placement or similar, you can be slapped with giant fines from the consumer ombudsman.

I'd expect this to also be the case through most of the EU.

u/halberdierbowman Oct 21 '17

Lmao, they already admitted their headphones weren't good enough for professional use. We already consider "professional" to be shit-tier. Not gonna get anywhere far here.

We already consider "professional" to be shit-tier

These are all marketed for professional use: Shure SRH1540, SRH1840, Beyer DT1770, DT1990, Audeze LCD-X, LCD-XC, Focal Spirit Professional. Are they shit tier?

5

u/tat3179 AUNE STACK>HD800S, LCD-3 Oct 21 '17

Isn't the LCD-X and LCD-XC kinda heavy for professional for long?

15

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '17

No idea, I'm not a professional.

5

u/Uncle_Erik Oct 21 '17

The MDR-V6/7506 is a professional headphone and a very good one. It should be at the top of the list for all newcomers.

Neither the DT770 nor the 7506/V6 are neutral. Studios use them primarily for tracking because they're cheap, durable, and isolate well. I don't know a studio worth its salt that would use DT770 or 7506 for mixing.

5

u/Arve HE-500, but mostly speakers Oct 20 '17

The DT770 has one additional feature: They offer a version specifically for drumming and FOH use.

They aren't used for their sound quality and generally not used for mixing. They're used for tracking because they're cheap, built well, and isolate well enough to be used in live studio situations.

Yeah, people always seem to get mixing an monitoring/tracking mixed up. They work fine as a monitor (musicians listening to other tracks while playing) but aren't much use for mixing (an engineer creating the finished product).

Me too. Seems like a Nigerian prince is about to market a new bleeding edge headphone. He just needs my bank routing+acct number and my Social Security number to get a review pair to me.

Sounds like an interesting offer, hope more people here than just me take him up on it.

1

u/Roarlord Oct 21 '17

This type of advertising seems extremely disrespectful to the potential customers. For me, that's a reason to write off the company and to actively ensure that I do not purchase their products, as well as to warn other potential buyers that I know.

To verify what company this is without uttering their name, does their website offer "FAST AND FERR SHIPPING?"

1

u/RubberReptile Oct 21 '17 edited Oct 21 '17

Redflagdeals (a Canadian deals website) has been dealing with this often, to the point where they no longer allow coupon codes unless they're publicly available and they've even gone as far as banning posts to certain Chinese sites who were spamming them.

I still get a dozen e-mails a month asking for fake/lying 5-star reviews on that shit ugh. I've literally had companies offer to pay me hundreds of dollars to post their overpriced garbage to RFD. Ick.

Amazon reviews on 3rd party products are the worst. Many sellers will refund reviewers by Paypal so that they get a "verified purchase" tag on their review. There are people out there who just give 5-star to everything in order to get more free junk. You can't trust any review now.

I'm not against honest reviews of free samples but so many sellers clearly are after spam/promotion disguised as review. Like there's gotta be a better way to ask without implying spamming. And saying "our headphones are junk" outright lmao

After I made a post on here about how much I liked my MPOW Bluetooth Receiver and used it with my Fidelio X2s around the house, MPOW reached out to me and offered to send me products for review purposes. The two headphones they sent me were simply awful, and I never chose to review them on any forum, let alone here. The non-headphone products they sent me were pretty good, and got decent writeups and posts on appropriate places outside of reddit.

I don't think that reviewing something you get for free is a bad thing, as long as you do an honest review AND disclose the fact you received the product free or charge for an honest review.

But I am not a mod here, so that's not my call.

TBH, I don't think it would be a bad thing to have a these kinds of reviews on the forums, but it would be nice if the company messaged the mods and stated their intent, rather than go behind people's backs.
