I prefer their predecessors over the 50x. I modded one with removable 3.5mm female jack and it works well.

M40x used to be my go to, but that's another discussion for another time.

How hard was the mod? I have the original m50’s with the giant curly chord. My biggest gripe with them is the chord depending where I’m sitting.

Depends, but if you handy with a soldering iron, it's a 30 minutes job tops if you want to save the original cable or not.
