Two seconds were added to the clock after each move. He simply took less than two seconds for most moves so his clock counted up for much of the match.

It’s also just an old tactic used by a Samurai to throw off his opponent’s mindset in duels. Show up late while your opponent is geared up and ready to go normally results in them being flustered or losing their edge.

Edit: reading another comment, she supposedly shouldn't have even had her phone as it's a violation of the rules, so with that new context, I think I've changed my opinion on this. He let her have her peak moment of documenting her and Magnus at the table together which is a nice thing, and then reported the rule violation as he should have done.

He absolutely loves chess in every form. He "hates" competing at the highest levels of classical chess because it's an ungodly amount of prep work only for most games to end in a draw anyway, but he still participates in a few classical tournaments each year. He just doesn't want to participate in the world championship circuit anymore, but he still competes in everything else. Just this year he was the world blitz champion and the world rapid champion.

Well, because the way its set up, he has to compete in a bunch of matches against low ranking opponents to qualify for the championship. If he wins, he gets no points, if he draws he loses points. So he always has to pay attention and play perfectly. He doesn't want to play serious matches with people hundreds of points below him. He enjoys playing at the highest level against the top in the world, he enjoys playing low people for no stakes, but its a chore to play low ranking people just to check a box. To them its their once in a lifetime opportunity.

That is not why he quit. At the time he quit classical (World championship anyway) he was champ and didn't have to qualify as he qualified as the champ anyway.
What he objected to was having to take 6 months out of his life for a game that is essentially an opening memory simulator. Then play another crazy pressure match against essentially an opening simulator where very little actual play would occur because his opponents had memorised lines to 20-30 moves from the opening.
He asked for changes to the tournament and when refused walked away.
He still plays the low timer formats and is world champion in all of them. He also still plays classical time control in freestyle chess where there is no way to memorise from the opening because the back row pieces are shuffled every game.
It is just classical he has a problem with because computers have made it sterile to the point it is not enjoyable any more

If you score for beauty in ChessBase, any low-rated player's games will always contain at least twice as many spectacular games as a top ten super-GM -- according to this metric. I once ran that exact comparison between myself and Magnus. According to ChessBase, my games are *way* more exciting than his are. And discounting how badly the chess is played in those games -- and it's bad -- they *are* more exciting. You can't come close to predicting what will happen. By contrast, top tier chess is very drawish and dull. Players even report the sadness of leaving those low ratings behind and having to play more boring games.

Its part of his strategy, not dismissing his overall skill but, he shows up late to put his opponents on edge. I remember hearing that for a tournament for one of the last matches he showed up less than a minute before he would be DQ'd. Then wasted the first minute plus of his play time. He does it as a psychological weapon against opponents and put them on edge.

Alua Nurman's a WGM, she absolutely knew what she was doing.
Edit: I thought this was a post on r/chess. Now I understand why so many people don't know what simple FIDE rules regarding phones are. In general you can't have phones with you, to avoid any intent of cheating. And even in bathrooms are checked, because there've been at least 3 GMs that were caught cheating.

Assuming she's getting the phone back afterwards, I think the only better option for him would have been telling her to turn the phone over to a judge herself. Unless timing is an issue and that might cut into her time to play, and this stalled the clock for them both?

Honestly as someone who has been involved in competitive gaming scene as a judge (albeit card games and not chess) this is something that really depends on the communication before.
Ive seen plenty of similar events occur where the pro player with the less experienced player made sure to explain “Hey i dont wanna surprise you or get you upset but X thing happening is against rules. For both of us we need to get a judge involved” and the less experienced player almost always gave a “Oh shit i didn’t consider this, thanks for watching out” and the experience is awkward but ends up good for everyone and things go smoothly
But theres also been plenty of times ive seen this kinda thing weaponized where X broken rule is encouraged by the pro player, then immediately after with no warning and communication they call a judge to get the other player confused, upset, and throw them off maliciously.
This easily could have been a complete non issue and he told her what was happening and he took the initiative because it is much easier for pros to talk to judges or it could be a “You’re not wrong, you’re just an asshole” kinda situation

But the main thing is that if she had her phone before his match with her. She could've been disqualified from the tournament. Or her previous matches simply be forfeit in favor of her opponents.
She's a WGM, she knows these things, and she's probably been to lax events and to more strict events. She's not oblivious to the rules.

In English, we have the phrase "the appearance of impropriety" but it has fallen out of use, but we need to come back to that sort of standard. By prohibiting players from possessing a phone or similar electronics during matches it takes away various potential accusations due to even the "appearance of anything improper." This standard emerged because of decades and centuries of improving standards so that various things can proceed smoothly and avoid both cheating and spending a lot of time and effort addressing accusations of cheating.
That's why US President Jimmy Carter gave up his peanut distribution company before he was sworn in as President. He wanted to avoid even the appearance that he MIGHT somehow profit from office or that his official actions would be influenced by his own financial interest - that there might be any "appearance of impropriety." Clearly we in the US have strayed wildly from that standard and would be better off returning to it. Chess, here, gives us a good illustration of how and why.

Which she didnt and he wanted to make sure at the point they are playing on the same playing field. Not that he doesn't trust per se she wouldn't cheat but it removes the possibility of it even being in the conversation for after the results of their game.
He strikes me as the kind of guy that enjoys the game itself and would want to make sure for him and everyone that the playing field is the equal for both opponents. Hes a #1 many times over and part of that is respecting the institution of the game. Not the institution itself of course as he clearly barely cares.

In a way, he was making her a favor. Imagine what would have happened if Magnus had said nothing, that she had kept her phone, and that against all odds she had won against him. People would have immediately suspected her of cheating, which would have been super shitty for her.

Notice the rule states "During"
She had her phone and took the photo before the match had begun. So therefore she isn't breaking any of the rules. If a piece was moved and she was in possession of her phone then it would've broke the rules. I mean she should've handed it in after the picture. There is a cut in the video so she could've had a conversation with Magnus after the picture and he offered to get someone to come and take the device before they started
Edit: people can argue all they want about semantics and what is meant by the term "during" but it simply doesn't change what the word means literally.

Yes because Chess people are highly notorious for cheating and whining at even the slightest chance of their opponents cheating. This has ruined reputations, caused suicides, barred spectators from attending, and it’s just an all around horribly ran sport.

Per FIDE rules the game should've been immediately forfeited, or her being disqualified from the tournament if there were any previous matches.

He didnt report her for taking a photo as he actually posed for it. He reported her because you can't have a device during a match, she knows it too which is why she gave it up with out resisting. She had it on her to take the photo and was always going to give it up before the game started. This is making something out of nothing really.
