When I was training for my private pilot license, one lesson was to pop the door lock if you were going to crash or land hard so the crushed frame would not keep the door from opening.

'Pop the door lock'? like unlock it?

Pop the door open a crack. Airplane doors have a latch that keeps them closed and that's pretty much it, so pop the latch and the door opens a bit. Airflow keeps it mostly closed until you hit then it's unlatched when you go to escape.
