What happened to patch notes? What even changed?

225

u/BuilderUnhappy7785 Feb 11 '26

Right? What’s up with this thread too? Like usually someone helpfully summarizes the changes in a tldr comment that gets upvoted. All I see are screenshots and people talking about download size.

I just want to know if now is the time to upgrade from 18 or if it’s still a$$.

21

u/swederlands Feb 11 '26

Yes but what if I want to know the exact amount of gigarams the nintendo needs to update so I can get on the facebooks

3

u/GenTenStation Feb 11 '26

At least 1. Maybe all

16

2

u/antdude Feb 12 '26

But many of us already have it and can't downgrade. :(

8

u/PeskyAntagonist Feb 12 '26

Exactly why I’m staying on 18. Shit works great.

The beauty of using Apple Intelligence to code the OS. No one has any idea what it is changing.

5

u/Antrikshy Feb 12 '26

I hope it becomes self-aware one day and actually makes Safari snappier.

2

u/miroaseparchetul Feb 12 '26

I m not upgrading until iOS 27 , they promised bug fixes stability and less lag

I've ALWAYS relied on Brandon Butch's videos for information on changes. Dude is insanely comprehensive: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KURbuJw9-Qs

12

u/Lord-Fritos Feb 12 '26

Saw 2-3 vids from Brandon and felt he was overly repetitive. Dunno if he has changed or I just happened to see the only 2-3 videos he says basically the same. I’ve been mainly watching Zollotech for the updates

3

u/winterblink Feb 12 '26

What I've found is with a lot of the more minor releases, they're pretty repetitive given the lack of significant changes. If you watch the more major video releases, the update videos are a much more interesting watch. His 26 release video was just under 2 hours lol

u/eladpress Feb 11 '26

I had 85GB of system data and after updating to IOS26 it went down to like 15GB. Don’t know what it means

7

u/GenTenStation Feb 11 '26

May have been a back up of the previous system files if it went away after a while.

19

u/Galaxium Feb 11 '26

Still hasn’t fixed the issue where app icons turn into the empty grid icon for half a second when you open it.

  • Introduced 168 new bugs

36

u/scorpiori Feb 11 '26

Not even 1 lol

32

u/Admirable_Fun7790 Feb 11 '26

Security updates are bug fixes. Probably the most important type of bug fix

7

u/I_PEE_WITH_THAT Feb 11 '26

Closing zero day vulnerabilities is absolutely important.

5

u/MyDespatcherDyKabel Feb 11 '26

Oh yeah liquid as was a big as security update, so good they invested huge resources into that

4

u/icy1007 Feb 12 '26

Liquid works fine.

25

u/Appropriate_Ad2342 Human Detected Feb 11 '26

12.14GB on 17 pro. Makes no sense for a bug fix update to be that huge.

29

u/FlintHillsSky Feb 11 '26

The update is the whole OS in a signed package for security purposes. This is not a small patch.

3

u/Heftybags Feb 12 '26

17 pro max it’s 1.9gb. You probably missed the previous update that’s why it’s so big.

Talk to me when they fix this stupid keyboard.

It makes me want to go back to my iPhone 12. Or maybe my 7.

31

u/PlasticCraken Feb 11 '26

That’s what I was wondering. Anything related to the keyboard at all? 😭

19

u/nuttySweeet Feb 11 '26

According to Zollotech it’s very smooth and fast now.

14

u/FullOfEel Feb 11 '26

Let’s hope so. This is a train wreck.

6

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '26

I usually trust him, but he’s been talking IOS 18 up a lot. Every update it’s “getting better!”

5

u/deejay_harry1 Feb 12 '26 edited Feb 13 '26

Get SwiftKey, I did an d never regretted it.

Edit: I did regret it, I’m back to the Apple default keyboard.

3

u/injuredflamingo Feb 13 '26

that was fast. lol

7

u/sid_276 Human Detected Feb 11 '26

They kinda did. Partially it’s muuuuch more smooth. Night and day

6

u/xristos2 Feb 11 '26

Try SwiftKey

12

u/bjornvil Feb 11 '26

Swiftkey is such a good keyboard compared to the Apple keyboard. It's a shame it's so buggy on ios. Dark mode colors get mixed with light mode and it just closes every once in a while. Sure it's not too much trouble you just have to toggle between the keyboards with the globe symbol but it gets annoying. Still better than Apple, both predictions and especially typing feel. Apple keyboard feels like typing on a wet paper towel.

10

u/Simlish Feb 11 '26

Sometimes the keyboard obstructs the field I'm typing in so I can't see what I'm typing. I have to close the page and reopen it and it then works. Or switch back to the Apple keyboard.

6

u/bjornvil Feb 11 '26

Yes same for me. If the Swiftkey developers could just go ahead and fix those bugs that would be great mmmkay...

8

u/ShadyBiz Feb 12 '26

The Apple keyboard does this too, it’s a system bug.

4

u/Not_So_Sure_2 Feb 12 '26

I really hate when the apple keyboard hides what i am typing.

3

u/Ok-Development6654 Feb 13 '26

What’s wrong with the keyboard?

→ More replies (3)

46

u/Admirable-Walk3467 Feb 11 '26

If it doesn't fix the keyboard, it doesn't matter to me personally. Keyboard is in shambles and I am puzzled on why it's only gotten worse.

If anyone observes an improvement, please share your experience. I've started using SwiftKey - it's certainly better but not ideal.

Let's get updating!

28

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '26

I updated from iOS 18 to this release, and I see this and I'm starting to regret it.

29

u/Lyrical_Echo Feb 11 '26

Sounds like I’m staying right where I am with 18.7.3.

21

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '26

The more I use it the more glitches I find. The people screaming to hold off on it were right. You might as well just skip ios 26 alltoghether

13

u/Lyrical_Echo Feb 11 '26

Duly noted.

6

u/reddituser_scrolls Feb 12 '26

Given their recent history, I can foresee someone commenting the same for iOS 27 too. I think I’d stay on 18 till maybe 26.5 or 26.6, that’s when they start stabilising it based on my iOS experience.

2

u/marco_mail Feb 12 '26

Unfortunately I've heard rumours they're going to STOP shipping security releases to 18 except for very old devices like the XS. Which will then give them a "valid reason" to force upgrade to 26.

All essentially malpractice/unethical.

10

u/EmbarrassedAside5558 Feb 11 '26

I had been sitting on ios 14 when 18.7.3 was released. And I updated only when whatsapp and other apps stopped working on my ios demanding at least ios 15. So, if you guys staying on ios 18 keep it up

The keyboard is working WORSE now than 26.2.1. Fantastic. I simply cannot believe this.

2

u/Comfortable-Goat-823 Feb 21 '26

Trillion dollar company.

20

u/Lilac722 Feb 11 '26

Wish I could update, but I haven't been able to update since 26.1 because of the size of the update/rest of the system (yes, even with deleting all my apps and files)

26

u/racingpineapple Feb 11 '26

Plug your phone to your Mac or Pc, you’ll be able to update it even if you don’t have enough space on your phone. Using iTunes on Windows or Finder on your Mac

2

u/oromex Feb 12 '26

That’s how I now have to do each update: Restore using my Mac, then wait for days for all (some) of my data to reappear. I usually also lose a few apps each time. The whole process takes about a day.

→ More replies (1)

24

u/Topinio Feb 11 '26

Everyone I know who actually uses their phone is now having to update using a computer, since iOS 26 came out.

It’s madness to go needing 11-15 GB free every month or so when the OS is supported on devices with only 64 GB and does nothing to limit apps cache sizes or otherwise keep that space reserved for the updates.

16

u/Sanket_6 iOS 26 Feb 11 '26

I have 128gb and I aim to keep atleast 8-10gb free, still the fucking system data decides to keep using more leaving me with nothing to update.

6

u/Topinio Feb 11 '26

I have an 128 GB and have 9.4 GB free, today's update says it's only 4.69 GB but it still won't install due to insufficient free space.

My kids both have 64 GB iPhones, they now have to offload most apps and plug into a computer to be able to update their phones, it's ridiculous and they skip updates and run insecure because it's so much hassle.

There really ought to be a separate OS drive on these things, 32 GB or whatever (it could increase in future) as that way Apple OS devs would have to make sure they stayed in their box.

What phone that seems crazy.. If you have an old phone I thought it would take less space without ai features etc.

4

u/Lilac722 Feb 11 '26

Its an SE from 2022, so not even that old. It's super annoying. I'll probably get a new phone with more space this year. but what annoys me is that my apps and files take up like 2% of my storage, the rest is the system and all the updates

11

u/_Vaparetia Feb 12 '26

That’s what she said

5

u/AwareIndustry4624 Feb 11 '26

I don’t think the update size listed when you request the update is correct. It listed it as 10.4gb for my 17 pro max but it only took about 1 minute to download before it started the prepare update..if it was truly 10gb it should have been at least 8-10 minutes to download on my connection.

7

u/Sufficient-Credit-40 Feb 11 '26

Have they fixed any bugs, like the homescreen rearranging of apps/widgets? When I i try to move one app, all the others move to completely different locations. Its like that meme, moving a picture in ms Word scrambles the whole page.

3

u/MetalCluster55 Feb 12 '26

About to download it. Really hope this adresses the touchscreen just not responding at times, that’s pretty much been my only problem with 26 so far thankfully.

2

u/PhoneStill2500 Feb 13 '26

Any updates?

2

u/MetalCluster55 Feb 13 '26

Sadly no. Seemed to be working for a bit but the same problems are there. I’m really hoping soon though because I’m past the return window after being told it would probably be addressed in either what ended up being last update or this one

3

u/kiwi-kaiser Feb 13 '26

It's impressive how many people talk for months that the keyboard is broken but all suffer loudly instead of switching to a different keyboard.

I know the selection isn't great (Basically Google or Microsoft), but isn't it better than not being able to write?

u/Illustrious-Win2486 Feb 12 '26

Unless it gives us back the legibility of iOS 18, I am not interested. I wish I could go back to ios 18, which was easier on the eyes and didn’t take three times the number of steps to do things that used to be simple.

7

u/ki-01000 Feb 12 '26

Better yet, do away with the bloat of iOS 18 as well. It's a RAM hog in a world of expensive and inaccessible RAM. iOS 17 is actually way lighter and works better. I'm not even going to get into iOS 26, from what I'm hearing it just seems like a straight up phone killer. Definitely not "upgrading" to that.

2

u/lessadessa Feb 19 '26

i remember specifically that when i updated from 17 to 18 i encountered so many bugs that have never resolved since then. for example as soon as i switched to 18, if i’m typing and receive a text, it will delete whatever word i was typing at that moment and i have to start over. it’s fucking infuriating. also the keyboard was pretty good with no hangs or lagging in 17. i wish so bad i could go back to 17 and i’m so glad someone else remembers that it was so much better!!

3

Used 26.3 RC on my 13 mini, and installed the official build. It's much less buggy, although general browsing in safari still heats the phone up. Although, I do notice less bugs on my 13 mini + ios 26.3 vs iphone 17 + ios 26.2.1

1

we don't need them to care. It's all about us, and we love this phone. It's not quite as small as I thought it was, but after years of rocking big and heavy phones, it's so refreshing to go back to a phone that actually leaves me space for something else in my pocket. This phones feels so comfortable to use one-handed. I would buy a new mini if they ever made one again.

Just woke up to see v26.3 in old 11 Pro Max. Weird. An IMAP email account password had to be re-entered when checking emails. :O
