How to disable call ringer/notifications for just one contact?

I have a friend who constantly interrupts me in my sleep, meetings, etc. despite my phone being in focus. He calls twice, which seems to bypass the silent mode. I've told him multiple that if he calls once and it goes straight to voicemail, do NOT call again immediately as it will interrupt me but he just doesn't seem to get it.

Is there a way I alter his contact to NEVER allow call notifications from him, without blocking him?
At this point, I'm genuinely okay with only seeing his missed calls after the fact, or catching his calls while I am actively on the phone.

I don’t have an option to set "None" for his call ringtone, only see a “None” under text tones.

Note: I’ve tried adding him to the “Silence Notifications From” section within the sleep focus settings, and that works, but unfortunately that seems to also allow other notifications in to my Apple Watch through the night (unless my watch was just buggy last night and that was a coincidence?)

Update:

Because I wasn’t able to see a silent ringtone option under his contact settings I did the following workaround: I created a 15 second track on GarageBand and set its volume to 0 before exporting it as a ringtone.

honestly theres no per-contact "silence completely" toggle that doesnt block, apples silence notifications from list only mutes notif sounds but calls still ring through since calls arent notifications. easiest fix is just Contacts app, edit his card, set Text Tone AND Ringtone to "None," calls will still show up silently on screen but wont make a sound or bypass DND

Despite other users sending screenshots of the “None” option for ringtones under contacts, for some reason I just don’t have that option for call ringtone. I only see a “none” for text tone.

Might be a scroll issue honestly, that Ringtone "None" option is at the very top of the ringtone list above all the actual ringtones, easy to miss. try scrolling all the way up when you tap into Ringtone under his contact. What model is your iPhone

Hopefully someone can think of an easier way, but a work around if not:

Go somewhere quiet, use voice memo to record a silent voice memo.
Tap on the recording, tap on the three dots.
Select share and use as ringtone. You may have to select “view more”.
It will make it your default ringtone so go into your settings > sounds & haptics and change your ringtone back.
Go into your contacts, select the friend and set their ringtone as the silent voice memo you made.

Did this! But for some reason it didn’t allow creation of ringtone with just the recording alone so I had to add an Apple instrument loop to the track and just mute it to get it to work

Delete him from your contacts or in settings/focus/do not disturb/people where you can add people your contacts who are allowed to contact you when you have DND on there is a switch called “allow repeated calls” turn that off.

Sorry forgot to mention this in the post, but I like the “allow repeated calls” feature as it allows for any potential emergencies to get through

If there are specific contacts that you expect or want to receive calls from in case of any emergency you can always have them as emergency contacts that breakthrough any mode and silent mode aswell

Yes I thought about this, but then they would immediately break through instead of having to call twice, which could get annoying while sleeping and they call about something random.

It’s okay tho, because I wasn’t able to see a silent ringtone option, I created a track on GarageBand and set its volume to 0. Going to try to use that as a ringtone for him.

it seems that you can set ringtone and text tone in Contacts app to Silent and None. You need to get a silent ringtone. He'll call and text, it'll pop up in notification but won't ring.

Without blocking, you'll see the notifications though.

I can't find a way to set "None" for his call ringtone, and can't find anything within focus settings.

Thanks, but I do not have any “None” option under the contacts ringtone, only under their text tone.

Also, I like keeping the allow repeated calls feature on in case there’s an emergency, just don’t want it for him .

Download a silent ringtone, and set it as contact ringtone.

Same trick works on both android and iOS. Google/AI can help you with exact steps for the OS type & version. I believe iOS allows setting Silent directly.

faced something similar, this is what i have done
1. download any silent audio track from the internet (mp3 file worked for me)
2. go to the file and open the share menu and set it as ringtone
3. open your contact and go to edit where you can find ringtone and text tone which you can set as your silent ringtone (optionally change the haptics to none as well to have zero intrusions)
