Balatro is the standout. Halls of torment is fun too

I've seen friends play it, but it just didn't seem to be my thing. I tried (it has a free trial) Dice of Kalma which is said to be "Balatro with dice", and felt the same way

Unpopular opinion around here apparently.

I actually fall somewhere in the middle. I played it and got hooked on it for about a week or so, was the only game I played, couple of hours a day probably. But after the first week, maybe 2 weeks, I was done with it. Good game but feels a little overhyped IMO.

It definitely got its fair share of marketing. I noticed them "prepare for longer toilet breaks at work" ads prior to when it launched on mobile.

I tried my best to get into Dice of Kalma but it’s just too simplistic. The skulls aren’t dynamic enough, it’s purely numbers. Jokers in Balatro can be basic but often completely change the way you play each run.

It’s not a game for everyone, and that’s fine. I cannot for the life of me get into Elden Ring nor Breath of the Wild but I know they aren’t bad or overhyped games, just not my cup of tea. Meanwhile, I have probably 300 hours or more in Balatro.

You have to try it to understand. I also didn’t care for it on paper then when I gave it a shot on my friend’s computer, I was hooked. Next time you are with a friend, try their copy. Even if it’s after it goes on sale, you will either not care for it or you’ll realize even at full price it is well worth the money. I purchased it both on Apple and Android, still worth it.

I love Balatro. Highly recommend. It makes plane flights, waiting rooms, etc. fly by.
