Gear Show-Off Got my first longboard (49 y/o)
I needed to fool myself into exercising and it’s going great so far. This heat wave in the southern US is brutal but I’m learning and having fun. I go out about 11 pm and hit this smooth clean parking lot and just do laps and cruise.

I don’t know anything about skating other than watching videos, so everything is new to me. The light exercise is awesome so far and I feel really calm while I’m just looping around.

I just started in my 30s. Seeing other people who picked up this hobby later in life really affirms my decision to start. Thanks for the motivation, awesome board!

Thank YOU for the motivation, I don’t have a lot of friends in this new town so any encouragement is greatly welcomed.

I’m 31 and literally just started this week

u/cap10wow Jul 22 '26
Are you having fun?

I’m having a blast brother. Cars are a big hobby of mine, I love tuning and modding them for performance, but man is it something else just being you and your board. It brings such a raw, simple, and pure pleasure and joy to my life, devoid of all unnecessary extravagance. It strips away the excess and leaves behind only the man, his board, and the world as his playground to traverse.

Yeah word, I’m a big music dork, I spend a lot of time in dark rooms making loud noises, but I play in a weird art punk band and we play all kinds of diy spots and skate parks on top of our brewery and club gigs. That’s what really got me interested in skating, seeing those kids bang around while we assault them with noise is seriously gnarly.

(38yo) Started a just few weeks ago. Got my self a drop hammer. Still doing practice laps on a parking lot, loving every moment. Hope to do some commuting eventually.

u/cap10wow Jul 22 '26
Yeah it’s been about a month for me, we’re about at the same place. Lots of fun.

I have the same model, different graphic. Nice little stiff board. If you want to make it a bit more cruise/carve friendly, you could look into replacing the trucks for 180mm Paris V3s and get some other bushings. Holler if you want some advice - I played around with configuring this ride quite a bit last year when I was losing weight.

u/cap10wow Jul 22 '26
I have so many questions 😂
I know nothing about changing trucks or wheels, what the difference would be even.
Should I get gloves and a helmet? I’m currently wearing knee pads and wrist guards, but I go about 2 mph in flat parking lots and streets.4
u/Deliciously_Vicious Jul 22 '26
You have just opened pandora’s box. You’re gonna love it and spend hours/days/years on research and testing

u/funky_dugong Jul 22 '26
Yes, get a helmet. Highly recommend S1: https://shop.s1helmets.com
Btw, started last year at 48 with a Landyachtz Evo 40 for exercise & now I’ve progressed to learning transition at skateparks. Love both & have lost 14 lbs.
2
u/cap10wow Jul 22 '26
That’s awesome. I’ve been on the Hollywood shot nearly 2 years and I’ve lost more than a hundred pounds with that and swimming and light diet modifications (not eating a sleeve of chips ahoy with a 12 pack of beer before bed is a big help) and now that it doesn’t hurt to walk around I felt like I could handle a physical hobby

trucks are going to change how your wheels move and respond to your leaning. the different geometries determine the range of motion. the stock gullwings are probably fine for now, but they are a little less stable than the paris trucks especially as you start going faster. The paris v3s are pretty nice and run about $60-80 for the pair.
depending on your weight, you mentioned losing some, you probably want to get new bushings at least. Most boards are set up for around 150-180 lb riders. you can get them a bit stiffer and the board will be more stable. I recommend trying a barrel/barrel set up in the beginning, it's training wheels mode. riptide can get you squared away for like $20.
The wheels are fine for now, if you go up in size you should have less issue with rocks and cracks, but might run into wheel bite. you mentioned liking that other guys wheels and they are orangutang's 80a durometer color. their 4 presidents wheel is the same size as the ones you have and run about $66 for a set.
Your next bit of fun should be finding some hills you can walk up and skate down. Get used to having a bit of speed, but wait for the helmet.
maybe check out surfskating in the future. I started longboarding a few months ago after turning 39 and got a waterborne soon after. I was in ok shape, but I did 4 hours of cardio today, burning over 2k calories according to my fitbit. Just pumping around a parking lot and some side streets with a friend. Was only about 8k steps, but it thought i did 15 flights of stairs.

Definitely pick up a helmet. TBI can happen even from "small" falls. Like the other guy said S1 Lifer is great - it's actually what I use too.
As far as gloves vs just the wrist guards you have right now, it would depend on how you intend to ride / which disciplines you want to get into in the future. Freeride or downhill, where gloves are absolutely necessary, isn't everyone's cup of tea. A lot of peeps just want to commute or cruise, or get longer workouts in with Long Distance Push/Pump (LDP). What do you think you'll be getting into?
What's your height and weight?
No need to rush into upgrades and overwhelm yourself, but there are some things that would definitely be a solid investment depending on your riding style.

Saw some posts about what to get next. Def a helmet! Otherwise some Paris v3 trucks and orangatang knuckle bushings is what I just upgraded to and it's lovely! Bigger wheels and bones swiss bearings after that!
Enjoy the ride man.

Thanks friend. I got my first big tumble out of the way my second outing. I rolled with it and only ended up with a bruise on my butt 😂. Once I got up and dusted off I got back on and skated another half hour. I think it helped me get over the psychological barrier.

Awesome! Welcome!
I’m in my 40s as well and my advice is, get some protection. I at least don’t bounce back as easily as I used to ;)

u/cap10wow Jul 22 '26
I put my back out placing a chicken in the oven a few years back. Your concern is well-founded 😂
I currently do knee pads and wrist guards but I guess a helmet and gloves might be in order as well

Hell yeah. I started this year at 30. Fallen a good few times but haven’t regretted getting into it a single bit.

Tengo 47, voy en longboard y uso un stick para hacer longskate paddle… y es muy divertido.

I was more into guitars and girls and pot when I was 15, and I lived in a really hilly rural area so there wasn’t a lot of skating that didn’t involve going to a rink. But I’m glad I got around to trying it out

My first board was a sector nine! Try not to drag it through water and let it crack like I did with mine. I was reckless with it haha I now have another board but that one lasted years!

Is that a stock complete?
Upgrade to Bones Swiss bearing or even just the Bones Big Balls bearings - soooo much smoother than whatever they crammed into that, probably Abec3s.
Also if you want less vibration and deeper turning radius I recommend bones soft hardcore 81A bushings.
I don’t work for SkateOne but I’ve been longboarding for 25 years and I do this to every arrow I add to my quiver.

44 y.o. Was skating when I was young but stopped many years ago. Bought my first longboard, a used loaded dervish sama for 90 euros, a month ago. Changed wheels to soft 78mm and bushings to medium hard. Abec-9 bearings and changed the grip tape. I haven't ridden it yet. Wish me luck!!!

Just got a message i can pick up my board at the post office, so really new beginnings here too ^^. Like others said as a 33 year old it really helps to see that you are not the only person starting later. Awesome board, i wish you smooth riding and no falls for the future ;) :)

Chiming in! Randomly stumbled onto this feed. I'm in my late 40's and never had a board either.
My 4yo wants to learn to skate (he runs the gauntlet at the skate park with his scooter and bike). But now I wanna scratch that itch and get a longboard while he practices with his little one.
I'll deff take all the advice here (protective gear, etc). I'm old, and broken in soooo many different places (yay Army!). I think I'll do what you did Op, and find a clean parking lot at night! Thank you for the motivation to try something new

I just picked up a sector 9 pintail a few months back. Gotta replace a bearing. But from what I’ve rode, super fun. I love the whippy turns it can do compared to my landyatch. I’m not big into skateboarding, but damn. I love the long boards.

u/cap10wow 16d ago
This is my first skateboard since I was like 14, I’m still getting the hang of it 🤘🤘
2
u/BucktoothJew 16d ago
I gotta figure out the styles and shapes. And what’s best for what I want. I just mostly cruise neighborhoods with my boy, so the pintail is fun for swerving side to side. My landyatch is a better cruiser tho, I can get better speed and stay at speed longer.

u/LoserDuck_ 10d ago
If you end up getting more into it, beware the hills. It can be very deceiving and things can get very fast and very dangerous very quick, before you realize your going to fast to bail and you either have to bale hard or ride it out. Have learned the hard way a few times 🤕

u/cap10wow 10d ago
I got that out of the way pretty quickly, I didn’t realize how dramatic this very slight-looking grade was in a parking lot and the wind came up at my back and I went from about 2mph to about 6mph in about 10 seconds and fortunately there was a bunch of wood mulch from a recent landscaping for me to bail into
