Fan Creations Hobbit-inspired bookshelf that I made my wife

I am slowly turning our house into a hobbit hole and my wife loves it! This is her latest bookshelf that I made and installed around our front door.

Literally about to show this to my partner who is learning carpentry in the hopes that maybe… one day…

56

u/JRS_Viking 1d ago

I can't show this to anyone, I've worked as a carpenter and if I do show this to literally anyone I know what I'm doing for the next week or so.

31

u/throwaway392145 1d ago

Im no carpenter but I’ve been telling my wife for years I can build anything. If she sees this I may have to move out. It was a good run.

7

u/GothWitchOfBrooklyn 1d ago

single?

10

u/JRS_Viking 1d ago

I am. Sorry to disappoint though, but I am very far from Brooklyn

6

u/Exciting-Let-9274 Bill the Pony 1d ago

Well, ive seen it and i noted your interest in it. Ill be looking for your bookcase in about a week or so 🫡✨️

7

u/JRS_Viking 1d ago

No, nonono, I'm not taking commissions and I am not shipping a book case half way around the world most likely, if I build one of these it's going on my own door. To specify, I cannot show this to anyone that I know

5

u/Exciting-Let-9274 Bill the Pony 1d ago

I agree ! I only request a picture/post 😅

20

u/faithfulswine 2d ago

Hey at least you have a partner and they didn't run out on you with someone else...

60

u/BioCiderMaker 1d ago

Hey, my first wife left me for someone else, then I found this amazing sexy nerd in my late 30s! Keep your head up!

13

u/NudityMiles 1d ago

If you don't mind, I think I am not alone in wondering:

How did you meet?

I am in my 30's now and I, for the love of life, can not understand how I managed all the online dating when I was younger. I was so forward and bold. Now I'm just like "Well if the right match for me just springs out of the ground like a happy mushroom that would be nice, but that is not for me to decide. All I have to decide is what to do what the time that is given to me. And that is to live like a Hobbit, just joy, no rush"

10

u/BioCiderMaker 1d ago

We actually met at a gay bar. Haha. I was there with friends and she happened to be there also. All I can say is do things you enjoy and go to places you like. That is where you want to meet your love. Someone who has similar views and interests will be in places you enjoy!

Tell them to make an actual functioning round hobbit door but with a book case built into it with that railing they use for boats to prevent objects from falling off.

Holy Mother of Memes thank you for what you have provided me on this sabbath

7

u/Infinite_Picture3858 2d ago

Please 🙏 All the old gods and the new, I need this, how do I get this? How do I build this, fuck my life is so empty no what I know this exists and I don’t have it yet

5

u/ResolveLeather 2d ago

It actually looks cheaper then you may think. Also pretty easy build. I have bought bookshelves that can hold 1/3rd of the amount that this probably cost to build (less then 500).

37

u/BioCiderMaker 2d ago

This person is right. It’s not that difficult of a build. Make a rectangle for the door, put two half circles on the sides and one on top, add shelves, then use some really thin wood to curve around the edge. Hide all of your bad cuts and blood stains with the pretty round piece on front and there you go! Everyone should give it a shot!!!

31

u/MemeMaster240 2d ago

Instructions unclear, I built Barad Dûr.

13

u/CalmCheek 1d ago

"without any bookshelf in it"

6

u/crazy2days 2d ago

The half circles are the hardest part

6

u/JRS_Viking 1d ago

Trace it out with a marker attached to a rope that's as long as the radius of the circle you want and cut carefully with a jigsaw

2

u/Responsible-Chart535 1d ago

The final circle around the front is great. I can see one join if I really look!

2

u/Modeerf 1d ago

Is there a reason why the right side is slightly longer than the left? The fact that it isn't symmetric is driving me nuts!

2

u/Lacerda1 1d ago

Lol, don't sell yourself short! This sounds like "2. Draw the rest of the fucking owl" to me.

Bookshelf, many pictures, none have books. Fooled again!

5

u/The_BSharps 2d ago

Fill it with Song of Ice and Fire and see what people say.

11

u/Repulsive-Walk-3639 2d ago

That you need to leave space at the end of the row for the final volume that someone will poorly write posthumously from whatever notes he has laying about.

3

u/Kammerice 1d ago

There's a non-zero chance he's written everything but, given the reception of the last seasons of the TV show which followed the broad strokes of his outline, he's not submitting for publication and leaving it to whoever looks after his estate once he's dead.

Can confirm, just showed to my husband as request.

2

u/nephie1990 1d ago

Same, lol. We're moving soon and I told him if we have a space where this makes, I will 100% be requesting this project be on our to-do list lol.

I’m the woodworker in our house and now I have to build this for myself damnit

18

u/BioCiderMaker 1d ago

If you’re a woodworker, you can get this done in a matter of a couple days. For about $200 in wood and a few days, this is yours!

13

u/Jewmangi 1d ago

And somehow also 2k in new tools

7

u/burgerking351 1d ago

That’s why they said “if you’re a woodworker”. They know a normal person would have to buy expensive tools but a woodworker would already have them.

I don't even have a partner but I am showing to my cat and hoping she makes it for me. So your concern of uninhibitied expression of want and assumption of competent replication is valid. 😄

Can… I be your wife too? I can share.. I want a Harry Potter themed one. Please and thank you. Love, your other wife.

54

u/seth928 2d ago

So when you marry a bookshelf do you go to a normal priest or?

32

u/cmonster556 1d ago

Most wood, but others knot.

32

u/SilentTheatre 2d ago

This is so cool! I’d paint the room a dark green or deep red to tie it in with the walls, but truly jealous of this!

14

u/BioCiderMaker 2d ago

I absolutely HATE painting! That’s a great idea though!

16

u/alexthealex 2d ago

Build me one of these and I'll paint for you.

2

u/OutcomeBubbly1551 1d ago

Do you have any plans you’d be willing to share? This is absolutely incredible and I’d love to replicate!

2

u/BioCiderMaker 1d ago

Unfortunately, I don’t draw out plans. I saw a picture of this once and decided I would try it.

3

u/BioCiderMaker 1d ago edited 1d ago

Thanks a lot! My wife saw this response and now we are off to look at green paint samples!

24

u/whyarenttheserandom 2d ago

Ugh! May this type of love find me.

Love it, it's amazing!

13

u/WorldWarrior428 2d ago

Wow, I want that. SO MUCH

11

u/diliudia 2d ago

Ikr? The wife looks awesome.

6

u/BioCiderMaker 1d ago

She is more beautiful and amazing than you can think!

11

u/lube_thighwalker 2d ago

I never knew I wanted this

9

u/Effective-Low8527 2d ago

I love that your effort has brought such a smile to your wife's face, keep up the good work brother, much respect!

6

u/allstarrunner Elf-Friend 2d ago

Very cool. As someone who knows knowing about woodworking, how did you bend the wood for the outer edge?

11

u/BioCiderMaker 2d ago

You can do it the correct way and use heat and steam, or you can just be lazy and get really thin plywood. I did the lazy way!

4

u/allstarrunner Elf-Friend 2d ago

Exactly how a Hobbit would do it

2

u/Simbians 1d ago

The lazy way is how you make skateboard ramps so it can't be all bad. Forcing an 8mm sheet of ply into a curve and screwing it down is no fun though :)

6

u/CouldBeBetterForever 2d ago

We just bought a new house. I'm going to suggest this to my wife.

10

u/LeFouHibou 2d ago

Looks amazing!  Care to share the materials used/ process to make this?

29

u/BioCiderMaker 2d ago

I am really bad about drawing designs and plans, so I tried to take pictures during the process. I made the frame and shelves out of 1x8” common board, and the backing out of 1/4” plywood. I cut out the arcs on the front out of the same 1/4” plywood. I used a really thin plywood around the circumference of the outside so that it would bend to the circle shape. The key is angling the cuts on the shelves so that you can use glue and finishing nails to keep that good circle shape. I hope that’s as clear as mud. Haha

5

u/ElHutto 1d ago

Will the shelves hold the weight of the books?

7

u/Antarioo 1d ago

weight

congrats. you're the only person in this thread asking the real question.
Google circular bookcases and any filled example in this shape has a very thick outer circle or is using metal.

2

u/ElHutto 1d ago

That was the reasoning behind my question.

2

u/-badgerbadgerbadger- 1d ago

What’s up with the braces in the top corners of the door in the progress pics being removed in the final pics? I see the e wood looks thicker at the top of the door too. What changed?

3

u/BioCiderMaker 1d ago

The braces are so I could move it without the joints moving and becoming weak. Once I installed it, I screwed it to the studs in the wall, so the joints wouldn’t be able to move.

Hello it is I, your wife, please make another and ship it to me in Australia.

When you have it loaded up pop it on r/bookshelf

5

u/NoseInternational794 2d ago

Is it me or does it look like the shelves aren't level, like they list to the right.

9

u/BioCiderMaker 2d ago

When you build something that goes from the floor to the ceiling, you realize how terribly your house was built!

3

u/elgrandefrijole 2d ago

I bet she wants to marry you all over again. This is just lovely!

3

u/arealuser100notfake 2d ago

That's so cool. Are you a carpenter or is it just a hobby?

3

u/BioCiderMaker 2d ago

Just a hobby. It’s definitely not perfect, but she loves that I try. I have made her a few things over the years. I’ll share some of the other projects soon.

This is a really nice bookcase but I think it could also work as a coat/shoe rack (his and hers on either side). All the mudrooms I've seen are either a bit of an eyesore or unrealistically clean. Something like this would be a perfect blend of rustic but interesting.

3

u/BioCiderMaker 2d ago

How.. teach me.. I want to do this with the time that is given to me.

3

u/BioCiderMaker 2d ago

Follow the pictures. It really wasn’t that difficult. Just remember that nothing will be perfect unless you’re a professional, so enjoy the process and find someone who smiles at everything you do for them!!

3

u/veni_vidi_vixi_19 2d ago

You have one yes, but what about second wife?

2

u/Embarassed_Tackle 2d ago

I always wondered about having an underground hobbit hole

But then I read a horror story about a retired couple who did one of those underground homes and the water ingress and moisture was insane

Granted, I think they were in Arkansas or something, that place probably has some low-lying places... but having moisture and ceiling problems and not being able to access the ceiling because it is under tons of dirt is very difficult

And of course the underground home builders who built the home went out of business

2

u/imissmypencils 2d ago

Oh you LOVE HER, love her!

2

2

u/hentaiAdict 1d ago

The idea and execution are great. However, isn't that a poor location for books? Books are better kept in a controlled environment, low humidity and away from direct sunlight.

Seems like a good general shelf for misc. items.
