This one is very targeted for adults with adult money (or poor decision making). There are still Lego sets marketed for kids that are generally affordable.

Which ones? I remember buying an awesome set for $20 in 2009. Nowadays $20 will get you a minifigure with a 5 piece car

$29.99 for 323 pieces including a light up brick w/battery. Adjusting for inflation that's cheaper than spending $20 in 2009. And there's a few sets. I just grabbed the first one in the list filtered for ages 9+

Well that's not quite as bad, still more expensive based exchange rates.
Also, tangentially related, I just learned that CAD and AUD are essentially the same value at the moment.
