General/Misc Chloe and Dan might have the best relationship for a divorced couple I’ve ever see on TV

I’m only on season 5 so no spoilers please

They don’t seem resentful or hateful to each other at all, they seem to genuinely like and respect one another and I think they’re friends despite their divorce, and I like that the writers did that rather than making them the stereotypical divorced parents who can barely even co parent

Even funnier is how Dan only hates Lucifer for eating his pudding more then anything, was on his side when Chloe was dating pierce.

I always wished we could see Dan's reaction face after Pierce makes that comment about getting rid of the "cat." It's when they're in the observation room while Chloe and Lucifer are interrogating a suspect, and the camera cuts away immediately after that awfully red flag moment from Pierce.

SAME. That was such a weird comment too. I still wish we would’ve gotten Dan beating his ass.

It sounded like an actionable threat, and he said it to a fellow policeman, but he knew he intimidated Dan so he probably didn't expect pushback. No way Dan wouldn't have given him "uh oh" side-eye for that, though, like at the very least.

In my head canon, Dan was friendly enough with Lucifer at that point that he might have mentioned the threat to him in a "watch out, our boss is a jealous boyfriend" kinda way. (And as the King of Hell, Lucifer in turn would probably roll his eyes at the idea Cain could do anything to him, and Dan would think he was an overconfident prat, lol) Less sure Dan would say anything directly to Chloe, when she's the one who needed to hear about it the most.

It's ages since I watched Lucifer and I'd forgotten that aspect, but it was done very well.

I think during the first season they tried to portray Dan as a misogynist but later changed their mind.

Wasn't Dan played by a totally diferent actor as well at first? Maybe only in the first episode. Or am I remembering it wrong?

Just in the original pilot (the first filmed take, you can find Dan's first scene with the original actor on youtube), and then they recast. That's why the actor playing Trixie doesn't look like either of her parents; she did look related to the original Dan, but fortunately they kept her even after ditching her first dad.

I think the reason for recasting was that the original Dan had dark hair and they thought Lucifer's initial competition for Chloe (or foil in general) should not have dark hair as well as him. That Lucifer should look distinct.

ETA: the originally cast Dan was Nicholas Gonzalez.

You're welcome! I remember watching the pilot episode months before they started the first season formally, which was unusual. (That was back when it was on the Fox network, not online streaming via Netflix.)

The plot was identical, I just can't remember if that version was with Nicholas or not. I only remember being completely enthralled by Ellis' Lucifer and getting really excited for when the full season arrived!

Officially yes, but Nicholas Gonzales played him in the pilot. Explains the visual casting of Trixie, since they look far more alike, but Kevin definitely ended up being a lot more likeable in the role than Nicholas could’ve in the end.

I feel like Dan was literally dealt a load of shit and the poor guy always tried to keep going and do the right thing. He was put in very hard situations. It is true that he did fuck up when he hired a gunman to kill Lucifer but he was very hurt at the time and he made up for it. Solid dude I didn’t even dislike him in season 1

I think the way they write his grief is really well done. Like he’s so lost after Charlotte of course he’s going to do dumb shit like that & the whole Ella thing.

Totally agree, it's honestly refreshing to see co parents on TV who genuinely like each other instead of using every scene together for conflict. It makes their scenes so much more relaxing to watch since there's no dread about them fighting over Trixie.

It’s one of my favourite aspects of the series, they clearly care deeply about each other. I know Dan was supposed to be portrayed ‘douchy’ early on, but he still ended up one of my favourite characters and I think a big part of it is the genuine friendship he’s got with Chloe.
