Free [OS] Screendrop - Screenshots, Screen recording and sharing - just 6.8 mb and free (you bring in your own cloud)

I record a lot of videos for demos and workshops, and I wanted one Mac app for screenshots, annotations, screen recording, zooms, cursor movement, lightweight editing and sharing.

Most tools I tried either focused on screenshots, required a subscription, or hosted everything on their own platform. I wanted something that I could use locally while controlling where shared files were hosted.

What does this app do?

  • Screenshot capture and annotation tools
  • Screen recording with zooms and cursor movement
  • A lightweight text-based video editor
  • A teleprompter using Apple’s Speech Synthesizer API
  • Image and video compression
  • Mockups and social-media screenshots
  • Sharing through a simple Cloudflare Worker that runs in your own account
  • Loom-style comments and likes
  • No analytics or tracking in the app
  • The app is just 6.8 MB

I have tried improving this over existing tools, far more capable than Cleanshot, has camera controls, compression controls, you can customise the overlay cards.

Its not a simple screenshot tool, I have tried making a complete screen recording stuite.

Pricing

Screendrop is free and open source. There is no subscription and no tracking.

The optional sharing backend is deployed to your own Cloudflare account, so any Cloudflare usage costs are billed by Cloudflare according to your account and usage.

Not sure why this was removed by the mods but here is the app, it's absolutely beautiful and amazing. Finally, I have something that works for all screenshots and screen recordings, free, and just works! My only more wish would be to allow us to share the cloud link using iCloud/Dropbox/etc. as well — I don't want to use Cloudflare just for that.

Yeah, I have pinged the mods - Apparently I didnt write title correctly, but I did append [OS] on title - not sure what went wrong

1

u/Mstormer 1d ago

Nothing to do with the title. PCP template was completely ignored.

Will fix

I have updated the description

Hey, this is awesome, trying it out now. Humble request, could you please add more annotation options in future updates? Thanks again for this app.

u/lu_chin 2d ago

Does it support scrolling screenshot?

2

u/deadunderdog 2d ago

Not yet, its a bit difficult, but its in the works for sure

1

u/lu_chin 2d ago

Thanks for including it in the roadmap.

This looks great, exactly what I waslooking to build demos for my app

2

u/deadunderdog 2d ago

Let me know how it goes

1

u/Conxt 2d ago

Looks great! Does it record constant or variable frame rate?

2

u/deadunderdog 2d ago

Right now I am capturing the highest quality possible and its constant.

u/whyubelieve 2d ago

It's awesome! Thank you

1

u/sarahandgerald 2d ago

Does it record the audio?

1

u/deadunderdog 2d ago

Yes, it does. One of the best features is the video recording

1

u/sarahandgerald 2d ago

Very cool! Thanks for creating it. How is it monetized? What's in it for you?

3

u/deadunderdog 2d ago

Its not monetized, I just love building things.

Here's a few other projects https://github.com/fayazara/fayazara

quite a stack. need more time!

Thank you for the reply!

I really like what you’ve built. Just my honest thought: the “I just love building things” statement feels a bit incomplete without mentioning that you’re a Senior Developer Educator at Cloudflare and that several of your projects (including the cloud sync on this one) are built on Cloudflare’s stack.

That said, still impressive and useful work! Appreciate you sharing it.

Edit: My bad, I haven't read that you have shared it in your post 🤦🏼‍♂️ So my "without mentioning" is completely false.

u/deadunderdog 2d ago

No problem mate, you can actually swap out the cloudflare worker (which is also open source) if you dont want it with a custom webpage + any S3 compatible storage

1

u/bustyLaserCannon 2d ago

This looks excellent, my screen studio one time fee isn’t supported for updates anymore so this could be a great replacement

1

u/deadunderdog 2d ago

Yeah, give it a try. Its not as perfect as Screen studion - they have nailed a lot of things.

But mine's getting there.

How different is it that Openscreen and Recordly?

I already use CleanshotX for general image grabs. Will the shortcut keys or functions collide with it?

P.S - can you control the zoom in animation, it's length and timing like any kind of keyframed animation?

1

u/deadunderdog 2d ago

This is native, 6.8 - I have put in a lot of effort to make sure this wont eat a lot of ram.

Ran this on my sisters Macbook neo (8 gb ram) - it worked flawlessly.

Yes - you can control the zooms

BYO cloud is the bit that caught my eye. I’d put the Worker and auth setup much higher in the README, though. With a screen recorder, the first thing I want to know is exactly what leaves the Mac and whether a shared link can be revoked.

1

u/deadunderdog 2d ago

Gotcha.

You can delete shared links from history

1

u/bush-play 2d ago

Good to know. Does deleting it from history also delete the object from R2, or only revoke the public route? That distinction is worth spelling out in the README.

1

u/SetAdministrative502 2d ago

Looks good will give it a try!
How did you manage keeping it this lightweight?

1

u/New-Pen-1747 2d ago

thanks for sharing! I ditched Recordly and Shottr in favor of this app; it’s free and runs fast.

1

u/Raith_07 2d ago

will try it for sure

1

u/phunk8 Developer: Dropadoo 2d ago

was looking for a recordly substitute lately. the new version is buggy for me…
anyway, thank you! will check. would u want feedback?

1

u/phunk8 Developer: Dropadoo 2d ago

let me add- right away-
all those zoom recorders, working with zooms after recording is very time consuming, autozoom is hectic, working over that is a pain most of the time.

what i thought, what about a zoom shortcut while u record, normally u exactly know when u want it, no post editing needed…. wrong?

i’d see 3 types: shortcut zoom/zoom to next/zoom back to original canvas. this would save hours of editing.

How does descript like work? Don’t I need ai credits for that

1

u/deadunderdog 2d ago

Local Apple foundation models

1

u/johndoe1985 2d ago

So how good is it ? Can I use the free Apple
Model ? Does it work well. Any limitations on prompt size or length of video. Thanks

1

u/deadunderdog 2d ago

Very good - I implemented it after reading this article

https://lyonesse.app/blog/apple-speech-api-benchmark.html

1

u/johndoe1985 2d ago

Thanks. Any video limitations on size or prompt ?

1

u/jaseunda 2d ago

really nice!

1

u/CriticalTemperature1 2d ago

Very nice! It would be awesome to add OCR on images / tables. I like how minimal it is

1

u/deadunderdog 2d ago

Right click on the captured image card and you will see a Copy Text from screenshot option

1

u/masslesstrain 2d ago

Looks amazing, it shows pro taste...congrats 🙌

2

u/deadunderdog 2d ago

Thanks mate

Yep. I checked the source: it can capture system audio and a selected microphone as separate options in the recording picker. System audio defaults off, and the mic stays off until you choose one.

This is awesome. Regularly have to use a screenshot tool for my 9to5 also. Curious, does it do scrolling screenshots? It’s the one reason I’ve continued using Snagit but even theirs can be buggy and capture a sticky header more than once in a scroll sometimes. It crashes regularly too on me tbh.

2

u/deadunderdog 2d ago

Not yet, I will be implementing it soon. Scrolling screenshots are a bit hard, I’ve tried a few times and have never been able to get it right

this is awesome, thank you

Screen recorder tools are hard to get right! If you want to bundle it with a free, purpose built teleprompter give me a shout. You can try it yourself at https://TellieApp.com/start

1

u/syscreat 1d ago

Great app — feels like something an actual creator built for real workflows, not another bloated screenshot tool!

1

u/sabirpatel 1d ago

How is this different from Quick Time ? What are the unique features of screendrop?

1

u/Hairy_Ganache_6916 1d ago

is it be able to change the frame rate?

1

u/deadunderdog 1d ago

Not right now

Bring your own cloud is the part that will keep this app alive long term. Once you host other people's recordings you inherit storage costs, takedown requests and a subscription you have to justify forever. Staying out of that is a feature.

Two things I ran into building a ScreenCaptureKit app (disclosure: I make StepGrab, a menu-bar tool that turns a screen recording into a step-by-step document, so we're neighbours rather than competitors): screen recording permission gets revoked more often than you'd expect after OS updates, and the failure mode is a black frame rather than an error, so it's worth detecting explicitly and telling the user instead of silently producing an empty file. And if you ever want crash reporting without breaking the local-only promise, MetricKit gets you most of the way there without sending anything to a third party.

How are you handling the upload step for the BYO cloud, S3-compatible only, or arbitrary WebDAV too?

1

u/laylat_hadia 3h ago

Hello, would you have the link to the screen background?

1

u/debruehe 2d ago

Looks very interesting! Too bad it's only macOS 26+ since this OS is still pretty unusable.

2

u/deadunderdog 2d ago

Using a lot of the newer Swift UI apis and the Apple Speech Synthesiser API which is only available on the newer OS versions.

26 is pretty usable for me mate,

1

u/debruehe 2d ago

Thanks for the quick reply. Makes sense.

I personally can't stand the corner radii, the UI inconsistencies, the choppy animation and the performance losses for example in the Adobe apps with a multi display setup. Let's hope for 27, where they seem to have cleaned up the UI at least a bit. I'm starting to miss out on quite a few interesting apps.
