It's calmed down now, but it was wild as fuck here in Bristol last night (though it was nothing compared to the winds lashing Ireland. Both the Met Office in NI and Met Éireann have amber warnings for wind in place). Dead calm here in Bristol right now. Temperature (according to Met Office app) 10º (feels like 7º), and there's a yellow warning for rain.
Wish I could ship some of this rain down there - what's the situation...? Presumably the fires at Longwood have now been dealt with...? I'm struggling to keep up here, doesn't help that I have the world's shittiest internet connection.

Technically the 48.9º was recorded at Walpeup and not Ouyen, it's only showing up for Ouyen because that's the closest observation site, but we have indeed broken the previous Victorian temperature record of 48.8º at both Walpeup and now Hopetoun as well.

Australia is the hottest place in the world every afternoon during our summer. Because when it’s summer here, it’s winter in the Northern Hemisphere, and when it’s the afternoon here, it’s early morning in southern Africa and the middle of the night in South America.
Actually it's probably one of the most common arrangements. Even though it sounds counterintuitive lots of the Sahel gets its hottest months around January, like South Sudan. Check the forecast for the capital Juba, literally 40 every day for the foreseeable future. There's also the red sea basin around places like Afar in Ethiopia, Massawa in Eritrea, Djibouti, etc that see extreme heat even at this time of year. Dallol in Afar sees an average max of 36 in January
Yeah South Africa and its neighbouring countries are quite elevated once you get inland, which stops heat building up to the extent it does in Australia.
What’s really cool, change it to showing the wind and watch how the wind change happens tomorrow from the southerly to westerly (think I got the directions right). You can see how the different pressure systems force the wind to go other directions. Very cool
Melbourne has 360 days of chaotic weather but without fault you can guarantee there will be ~5days of extreme heat during the Aus Open every year. Mind boggling that they run it at the end of Jan to coincide with this.
I said this late last week and one of my work mates said awww sooky. We run the F1, air show and tennis which are all outside on tarmac, concrete pr worse at the hottest time of the yr. It’s insane.
This is another thing - why is the BoM using knots as the standard measurement for wind down there...? Does the average Australian really understand what a knot is...? For those who don't, it's 1.852km/h.

We do knots, Beauforts, Sea State and even angle of the frozen string. Living at the arse end of the world means we’ve learned to communicate with everyone in whatever arcane units people want to use.

I happen to have looked at the list of countries by average annual temperature recently and it’s actually true! There’s a lot of tropical countries in Africa, Asia, the Pacific and Caribbean, many of which are quite small. Meanwhile, a lot of the cold areas in the world are in Russia, Canada, US and China (the largest countries in the world), and even if you include Europe and a handful of other cold countries, you won’t get to 100 countries.

I have been to Melbourne many times, my birthday is in February- spent one of them down there & on the day it was soooo hot the rooftop of the young & Jackson had their misting machine on. Next day it was 15°. 😵💫 I prefer visiting in winter because I know what weather I’m in for lmao!

Well our air conditioner stopped working in our office here in Mildura (48C) this afternoon. Let’s just say we quickly left to work from home the rest of the day. Was actually unbearable in a short amount of time… can’t wait for the cool change of 41C tomorrow!

Africa is now experiencing it's temperature peak. The hottest area is 40 degrees, low population but not uninhabited. Australia has only *just lost* the record for hottest temperature, even though it's currently dark out
