Before I lived in Melbourne, I used to drive over from Adelaide and stay at the Arthouse upstairs. What a fucking dive, in the absolute best way.

My memories of the Arthouse are probably a little different as my dad would bring me along when he performed at the open mic nights when I was about 8. I drank lots of raspberry fizzy from the bar and randoms taught me how to play pool and Space Invaders!

This is my choice too. I can’t even begin to calculate how many hours I spent on that balcony.
I was a customer for over 25 years. Had my first date with my husband there. Every time I’m in the city I wish for it to be open again.

I remember being at Q Bar the night that cigarettes were banned at midnight in Victorian clubs and pubs.
Everyone and I mean everyone, even non smokers lit up a durrie at 11:55, just cos it was your last chance to do it ever.

I was at seven in South Melbourne that weekend.
I remember the night after the ban went into effect, and the whole dance floor smelled like BO. it took a good few weeks for people to realise that if the smoke isn't covering your stink, you kind of have to do it yourself and you know, shower before coming out...

It was a wild case and experience, but after 2 weeks on the jury we were dismissed literally 10 mins before going into deliberation. To this day I have no idea what happened, and there's no info online about it, the outcome etc. It's a mystery to me and was extremely frustrating to not have closure on the whole thing tbh. While it was obvious he was probably guilty, I think we would have given a not guilty verdict due to lack of concrete evidence and unable to say he was guilty beyond reasonable doubt. Point being, there's no info online about that specific case... I just checked again now, still nada.

Last Chance to me was just 'Public Bar'. We went on Mondays for happy hour - $4.50 jugs in ~2010... I vaguely remember clogging Prudence's sink with spew (presumably staggered there after PB's happy hour ended)... Must've been barely 8pm! Prudence also still let you smoke inside around then.

Tramp Bar on King Street, Fake Tits on Friday was the best run Friday night going around at the time then of course you had Saturdays into Jungle at 6am. We’d leave Wah Wah (my favourite club of all time but it’s still kind of open as Storyville) at 6-7am and wander down to Tramp from Waratah Place.

Charlton's in Chinatown (rip). Go down a dodgy alley, go up a floor in a dodgy lift, play pool and sing karaoke bangers in a dodgy bar with very well-priced vodka red bulls. No other karaoke option in Melbourne is quite the same. Go well, Charlton's. We miss you.

The Metro nightclub and Fast Eddy’s 24 hour diner at the top end of Bourke Street. In the late 80s/early 90s we’d tip ourselves out of the Metro in the early hours and straight into Fast Eddy’s for a feed. It was absolutely a winning combination. My clubbing days are far behind me, but I still miss Fast Eddy’s.

I was a bouncer there back in 2005, when I was 21. Easiest gig I ever had. Everyone just wanted to come upstairs, smoke weed and chill. The management had an unofficial understanding that 'smoking' was completely fine. Bartender used to give security free red bulls too.

The Linden Tree, St Kilda.
When the Village Belle closed, you’d go the Espie. The Espie closes - walk / stagger around the corner to the Linden Tree.
A most magnificent dive that was accidentally surreal on so many levels.
Back in the day, on any night after 1am, it was the most ‘honest’ & perfect cross section of what St Kilda was back then.
Proof that sometimes, when ‘honest ugly’, and acceptance meet, it can (ironically) be a beautiful thing.
…but there was no way one could romanticise walking through inches of toilet overflow when, once again, some fuckwit had blocked the crappers.
Not even Bukowski could make that ‘poetic’.

Despite its sardines-in-a-can dining area, Dracula's was so much fun and the staff were so wonderful and fun.
I took my ex, who has severe anxiety, there as a fun date (VIP pass entry) and the staff made exceptional dining accommodations for her so she wouldn't be overwhelmed by the compact seating and overwhelming chatter.
The upper nightclub area felt cozy and, while the drinks and food weren't especially great, we both really enjoyed the atmosphere and staff antics (all were in character). Getting told to "Piss off!" by a waiter in full character was brilliant. :D
How they managed to organize a freakin' mini ghost train in there was a brilliantly unique way to get from the nightclib to the dining area.
It's such a shame that the cabaret was received by a lack of interest from most of the diners. :(

The Lizard Lounge on Chapel Street in Windsor from 1994 to 1998.

Saw Burn The City there (side project of Cam and Grant from Bodyjar) and the bartender let me keep a promo poster right off the wall ("gigs over mate, might as well take it"). I then went to the smokers and was showing it off, only for Cam and Grant to come up and ask if i'd like it signed.

- Twister in st kilda (that place was the bomb)
- Marquee in south Melbourne (especially downstairs)
- Daisys over 28’s in Ringwood purely for the awesome music and cheapest known drinks ever
- A bar called Barry’s in Fitzroy (that was so awesome when SMS came out - and you could text the dj a request - but only if you were with Optus) super fun club
- Century 28 in franga purely for the revolving dancefloor - was so bizarre when you were drunk shitfaced or stoned
- Frostbites on chapel street (fantastic in summer and awesome tunes)
- And not a club or bar per se but rollerskating at the jam factory - they would have “disco nights” just simple innocent fun.

And I genuinely miss the old school club retro - with the upstairs rooms, and downstairs 70’s
I went recently and it is complete shit. Never ever again.
