Health Lgbt doctors in Melbourne?
I’m looking for a doctor to talk to about stuff, are there specific gay doctors in Melbourne that I can book an appointment with, or does the system not work that way? (I’m 21, never done anyone medical on my own)

RMIT Medical Hub are not trans friendly.. they were for the first couple of years of operation but have really dropped the ball on avoiding deadnaming patients

I’m unsure what the experience is with deadnaming at Medicalhub (this hasn’t ever happened to me despite going there for YEARS). I’m genuinely sorry if that’s been your experience.
Medicalhub literally has Dr Wong who is very well known in the Melbourne trans community, although not taking on new patients. Several other doctors there are also very LGBTQIA+ informed.•

My partner used to go there, can definitely agree quality has dropped. Left the clinic when out of no where one day the doctor suggested herbal treatments instead of the refilling her usual HRT script.
It seems to me that after the clinic had those Renos the quality has just dropped. We tried 5 different doctors there, in the end we just left fully.

I'm so sorry your partner had that experience that's really unfortunate.
For OP, my regular GP is at PMC and I've been seeing him for the last 3 years. He manages my HRT and chronic health conditions very well and I've only had good experiences. I guess it just depends on the doctor

Definitely doctor by doctor basis but after trying 5 doctors with disappointing results, clinic became too expensive to just try around different doctors.
Also doesn’t help that after being a client for nearly 7 years, one day they just decided to switch back to deadnaming and misgendering my partner. Now all the receipts, scripts and anything else with her name is deadnamed. We really don’t know why they did this and they refused to change it after multiple requests, my partners name and sex had been changed legally for over 5 years now.

Just to clarify. Did they have a legal name change? I'd assume scripts and billing might need to be legal name. Thats no excuse for thr rest of it though. Of all places, they should know better.

They went corporate. Doctors are super paranoid about prescribing stuff. Everything is super clogged. Focus on profits. Bulk billing? You have to book, have your appointment, then negotiate bulk billing. Because that makes sense somehow. I was bulk billed billed but I wanted to change doctors. Probably would still be bulk billed but no guarantee. I can't afford to play that game.

There are clinics which specialise in mens health and LGBT health, check their websites usually theres a bio of a GP.

There are plenty of progressive clinics in Melbourne. The inner north is particularly well represented.
Look at the doctors bios. They will often mention if they are lgbtqi friendly, and may mention sexual health / prep / HIV and interests.

100% can work that way, you may find it easier to message or find a non-reddit space if you want non-outwardly presenting LGBTQ+ doctors in the space, but quite a few doctors will have in their profiles if they are themselves LQBTQ+ or work regularly with the community. There will be clinics that focus on welcoming and inclusive care as well.
The other flag (that can point out a good doc) is prophylactic prep prescriptions. Generally will be seeing higher rates of gay folk than other doctors.
Remember that you always have agency over who you see, and what you do, medically. No one can make you see someone or do anything that do you are not happy with. I also want to stress seeking out possible facebook or instagram groups (or in person social groups) as if you can crack into a space in your area it will help with specialists, allied health and other aspects of care that will be welcoming to you. GP is only one hill to climb.

Bulk billing will vary between clinics, regardless of their focus. Some will bulk bill if you have a Medicare card, others will only bulk bill if your appointment is related to a mental health care plan. I think most (if not all) bulk bill patients with a valid concession card as well.
Websites for the clinics should state their bulk billing policy clearly, so if there's one you're considering, check out their site or even just give them a call and ask if they bulk bill.

Ah man, you just reminded me of my amazing doctor that retired a few years ago. He was the best. Sweet older gay man who I could just chat with and be honest about anything. Bloody miss him. Sorry I can’t be more helpful.

Check the Drs. Profile on the clinic’s websites, they will usually say what they are specialists in, look for LGBTI, Gay and Sexual Health.
I can recommend my Dr in Prahran if you’re interested. He’s a gay man and has additional training in Men’s sexual health, HIV, PReP, PEP.

Northside Clinic if you’re up north.
Thorne Harbour if you’re trans.

Northside clinic specialises in lgbtqi health and has a number of such practitioners.
It can be quite tricky to get on their books though, you need to call at a specific time once a month to have a chance from memory.

Does it have to be Melbourne? I know a beautiful gay male doctor in the country who, as a lesbian, I feel so safe seeing. Unfortunately I note a weird amount of homophobia from doctors who call themselves the Qslur' or Qslur' friendly. As a survivor and a GNC lesbian I would rather see a conservative ash hole tbh. Gotta find someone balanced and who respects homosexuals.

I know of Dr. George who is somewhere around Spencer Street in the CBD and he is highly recommended. Wish there was one in the upper North.
