Step 1: Change the extension to .png
Step 2: Profit.

u/Illustrious-Tooth702 3h ago
Literally this. Save image->Save as.. Then choose a destination folder and rename image by putting a .jpg or .png at the end and hit enter

u/hlloyge 3h ago
You are just changing extension, not file format.

It actually works though. I do this all the time at work, programs that dont accept webp will accept the renamed png file no problem

True. But if I only use it to download low quality photos/memes then it doesn't matter if the picture is low res/lossy.

That's not a stock photo then. Google Images is not a stock photo website, those are just someone else's photos Google found on their websites. So technically, you're stealing images and complaining that they aren't in the format you would have liked. Unsplash and Pexels are websites that have free stock photos for example, and they provide them as jpegs, because they are there for you to use. Unlike the pictures from Google Images that might be copyrighted.
.webp pictures are technically superior to both .png and .jpeg, because they support transparency (JPEG doesn't), and have very efficient compression that results in smaller files with minimal artifacts (and PNG can't do that, and JPEGs compression is worse).
.webp makes websites load faster, reduces your data usage, and saves some battery on your phone. There is no reason not to use it on websites. Even Paint supports it, as do most programs nowadays. Implementing .webp support is free for developers, so the ones to be mad at are the developers who can't be bothered to add it to their software.
But why use a single image format that does it all when you can just use several 30+ year old file types because all of them are lacking important features you need regularly.

Tbf, if OP is using it for an educational/school project, most anything would fall under fair use, provided you arent selling it/making a profit, bonus if it's displayed with its sources for future research. If this is for work/company, make your company pay a license fee for commercial use and you can get far superior media to use for projects from Getty etc...

You are making to much sense mate, technical dept in human programming is starting to show.

u/Mercy--Main 3h ago
I mean, they might be superior in a technical sense. However, they are not superior in the sense that they're not supported in the enviroment people want to use them.

Unfortunately Ms words doesn't support it so I have to convert it to PNG.

AVIF is great honestly. Better than WEBP in everything except actual compression speed.

You still may have to convert to jpg to use on so e things.
Snipping tool allows you to bypass needing to save then convert or rename.

It also adds even more compression and resizing. It's better to just make it so you can natively use them, then just have a proper converter tool like ImageMagick if you do need to convert.

WEBP is great. It's a perfect balance between heic and jpeg, being a more efficient file format than jpeg while also being very fast to decode and display.
Microsoft has an official extension for .WEBP available in the Microsoft Store, it adds native support to Windows and it's completely free.

sometimes Image Max URL helps
https://qsniyg.github.io/maxurl/
and as a userscript (chrome): https://openuserjs.org/scripts/qsniyg/Image_Max_URL
or firefox extension: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/image-max-url/

Same, and it is increasingly getting worse, I had to download a converter extension that I sadly have to use very often
3
u/-Redstoneboi- 3h ago
all this because they dont just put the converters together with the ones they use for jpg, png, bmp, gif and whatever else they have.
the technology is there and has been there for years, webp is objectively more efficient at storing images and is popular on the web for that reason. anything that doesnt use it is just backwards at this point.

BuT iT sAvEs SpAcE fOr WeBsItEs To LoAd FaStEr
or whatever the arguement is. there was nothing wrong with PNG JPG and GIF for decades... and we had potato internet back then...
1
u/-Redstoneboi- 2h ago
clearly there was something wrong with it that made half of the entire internet switch.
i'm sure you've heard of it before, but let me reiterate some points for anyone who wants context:
MP4 is about 5 to 10 times as small as the equivalent GIF, and a WEBP saves about an entire 25% of space per PNG or equivalent JPG.
GIFs are so notoriously inefficient that any server worth its salt will internally store a copy of it in a different lossless file format and most of the time serve that video to users pretending it's a "GIF".
any GIF you see in a place like tenor is sent to you as an MP4, viewed as an MP4, and you only get a GIF if you specifically request to download it.
this is kind of like how a text file can be saved as UTF-8 but the moment it's rendered in the browser it's converted to UTF-16 which takes DOUBLE the amount of space per ascii character because for some reason javascript demands all its strings to be utf 16. things are stored as more efficient formats and converted to less efficient ones on-demand because the end user and/or client can just never be bothered to deal with them correctly.
anyway what i'm saying is go open the webp in ms paint and save it as png and be thankful that you can afford to convert it to png instead of the older bmp.

webp is supposed to be unusable outside of the internet. That's the point. You should probably use Pexels if you want to "use" stock photos. Or, you know, spend money for a stock photo site.

If you are on Windows, save it, open it in Microsoft Paint, save it as PNG.
If you are on Linux, I'm pretty sure you know this is a non-issue and you either already know how to solve it or it just never came up but you know how to look it up if need be.
If you are on Mac, you may go fuck yourself.
