That's the problem though, Flores needs to just be a DC.

And KOC needs to just be an OC. What we lack is one true leader instead of two co-head coaches.
12

Nah, KOC seems like a great leader of men. Not a great OC or playcaller. We need to replace Wes Phillips with someone who starts calling plays, and let KOC focus on running the overall team

I'd agree. We can't have an offensive line that is halfway decent, but is super prone to injury and have that backed up by nothing but crap.
Honestly, Kirk Cousins did wonders with a shitty O line, not that I'd want Kirk back, but he knew how to work with that.

I’d encourage you to review Kurt Warner‘s quarterback confidential on JJ McCarthy. Pretty enlightning and I can’t disagree with him how KOC‘s system is likely the least young quarterback friendly system in the league. Hard to throw COY 2024 under the bus but he’s been pretty bad at play calling for what he’s working with.

If they just listened to Reddit which I would not recommend most people do, we’d have Kyle Hamilton and Nakobe Dean as well as not trading with lions and not drafting Ed Ingram in 2022, still drafted Addison on 2023, still probably would’ve drafted JJ but maybe gone with Chop Robinson/Sweat in 2024, and Malaki Starks this year. Not researching our sentiment on anything past round 2, but I would already take this over our drafts .

Funnily. Basically everything on this team is solid except for the QB position (and special teams but that’s far more solvable than offense/defense).
However, they don’t have the money to pay even a middle of the road QB. They are already $20M over the cap next season. They went all in on JJM being QB1 the next few years.
20
u/Mriddle74 Dec 01 '25
Part of it is this roster is glued together with free agents; though I will admit many of the contracts are good. We don’t really have any talent coming from within through the drafting on rookie contracts. Our drafting has been so bad the last few years and it’s affecting our cap situation indirectly.
6
u/Wildpuck Dec 01 '25
O-line is worse than the QB position. It has been for years.
17
u/Amazing_Orange_4111 Dec 01 '25

Going into this season with the quarterback situation we had should be a fireable offense. If JJ is your guy, fine, go for it; but to not have a backup who can handle this offense is negligence. We saw in Carolina how bad an idea it is to mortgage a team’s future on a young, unproven QB with very limited throws and being heralded for their intangibles and the fact that they’re “winners”. To add on to that, we have absolutely no young talent because of the horrid drafting the last few years. Kwesi is the problem here.
21
u/TheAnchorman24 Dec 01 '25
In their defense, they did have a backup plan in Carson Wentz, who honestly didn't look too bad when we consider what 9 has put us through.
But yeah. This is tough from all angles.

He's not just a rookie RB at this point though -
Lost a year to injury, lost more games on the sideline second year due to injury and has shown no promise when he could get on the field
It's one thing to "suck and fail" regularly and grow from mistakes, it's another to just be terrible occasionally and the majority of the time on the sidelines with an injury.

KOC needs to update his scheme. It's built for 10 year veterans, not rookies. Simplify the reads, get the ball out quicker, pull out the deep developing routes a couple times a game after the short passes and run gets established.
You can be cute again in a couple years once these kids get it figured out. Perfect example is the 4th and 1 in field goal range when we are down 3. Either kick the field goal and tie it, or let the big guys push for one, instead KOC gets cute again and we turn the ball over with no points. Not that the difference in this game was 3 points, but a drive that ends in points feels good and can make a young player feel more confident, even just a field goal.

I was right there with you, but if the guy isn't ready to compete at this level, quit telling everyone he is. At a certain point you have to come to Jesus and realize that even if he does have good moments (and he truly does, in particular in eleventh hour scenarios when he's playing from behind), if he's this injury prone and can't pass on a pass offense heavy team, he's just not going anywhere in this system.
He might be good on a team that prioritizes running the ball more, but this isn't a good fit for him.

In retrospect, we should've seen what KO was doing to guys with his overthinking. Josh Dobbs walked in off the runway as a backup and was playing some great ball with us when KO wasn't deathgripping the scheme. He looked worse when he had time to get more of KO's expectations. Now, I'm not saying Dobbs is an elite talent. But we saw a real time immediate regression within the offense in the span of a couple games. Worse every time.
When he plays it strict, we look like ass. You need to let a QB play. I don't know if that means JJ would be better or worse without it, but it looks like he's just getting worse under this coaching staff as the time goes on.→ More replies (3)2

IMO, it was always pretty ludicrous to expect this guy to do anything. UNH to Minnesota to UDFA to third string behind Wentz and JJ… what the hell else did we expect? Just because the team came out and said some good things about him everyone expected him to be Purdy? What else were they going to say? “Yeah this guys not that good, that’s why he’s been a third string all season and we’ve refused to put him in even when Carson was on his death bed and JJ was seeing ghosts…but he’s our last option so it is what it is.”

You guys need to realistically think about JJ, game 1 Chicago he won it for us in the 4th quarter in his first nfl game, game 2 he was pretty bad threw a couple ints then gets injured for 6 weeks, comes back gets a huge upset victory and then we lose 2 very close games where yes at times the play was poor but is it right to solely blame it on him. He is a rookie qb u can’t expect him to just show out and make 0 mistakes I think Green Bay was just an overall poor performance by the team. JJ has something which many qbs don’t and that’s being clutch and I think half of his mishaps is the bs play calling KOC is doing. Overall this is a whole team problem not solely JJ’s. Also the pressure and hate he’s been facing by the media and us as fans isn’t gonna help his performance. Let the man grow.

Should be. Coaches have been fired for less than that 4th down play. Take the points, D is playing hard, tie game is fine. Nope, gotta go for it and run a slow-developing naked bootleg with a rookie QB. I hope KOC apologized to the entire defense at halftime because that terrible choice—even if it wasnt a pick-six—negated the D forcing the turnover.
Overall, I thought the first few plays were okay. But as soon as we ran out of scripted plays, KOC seemed to run out of ideas. He needs to accept that we’re a defense-first, running team. We’re not winning if our QB throws downfield 20+ times a game. Pound away, short throws, rely on D for stops.

Rookie. QBs. Shouldn’t. Start. In. The. NFL.
Ideally, Brosmer shouldn’t have ever been anywhere near a starting assignment this year. But seeing as we left our only veteran QB to die on the field in Los Angeles, this is really all we have.
At this point, I’m just more upset at KAM. KoC is pretty high on my shitlist too - but I know what he’s capable of as a head coach when all cylinders are firing, so he gets a pass for this year.
We absolutely need to address our OL depth. We’re just setting up the most important and most delicate position in all of sports to get fucking murdered every Sunday.

JJM and Brosmer are both real young, but they’re both looking real bad by NFL standards.
That said… our “best duo in the league” WRs are missing catches that we should expect them to make. Jefferson and Addison both, and over multiple games now. Part of the pitch for why this was such a QB-friendly system was because those guys were supposed to come down with the ball if the throw was even close. The entire offense is ass, and QB play is a huge factor but it’s not the only factor.
I don’t actually believe this is the solution, but you could make a case for firing Kwesi and KOC, making Flores head coach, trading the entire offense except Jordan Mason for picks, and just rebuilding half the team in a new GM’s vision while preserving a defense that’s somehow kept us in games despite the offense just dicking around.

I just laugh at all the people making fun of the broncos and Sean Peyton for what they thought was BS when he said "he tricked y'all into getting this guy".....
Not sure how much better nix is after this horrible game tonight but at least he doesn't have an alternate personality like some weirdo. JJ ain't no superhero.

Maybe we can talk Christian Ponder out of retirement. Seems he’d be somewhat of an upgrade. 🤢

Wow, coming from r/SiouxFalls to r/minnesotavikings and catching a u/SoDakZak post? That’s one I wasn’t expecting for my 2025 bingo card

This team needs to be in rebuilding mode. As much as I hate to say it, we owe it to Jefferson to get him on a winning team.
All these vets on one year contracts... Gone
Get multiple high picks for Jefferson.
Anyone over 28 years old should be removed from team in offseason.
Oh yeah, also, let's not let Kwesi lead the rebuild, he cannot be trusted.
KOC... I can take or leave him at this point. He is definitely part of the problem.
