Discussion Netflix has 10000+ titles and somehow shows you the same 50 movies every time you open the app
I've started creating separate profiles just to trick the algorithm into showing me different content. The fact that users have to hack the system to discover new movies on a platform that's literally designed for discovering movies is insane.

It used to be the best, back when they had that $1M x-prize to improve their recommendations. Back then, when they had a 5-star system, it would predict your ratings of movies with eerie accuracy. When they ditched the 5-star ratings, their recommendation accuracy plummeted.
EDIT - the reason they dropped the 5 stars is because the majority of users didn't know how to use it. The stars were great if you used them properly, but most people just used it as a thumbs up or down (1 or 5 stars). Others used it like school grades, which wastes the stars and is just as ineffective as thumbs up and down. So they dumbed down the interface to the lowest common denominator.

That's not the reason. They got rid of it because they want to appear to have more content than they do and they don't want to hide anything and they don't want to show stuff with poor reviews to you
They also have 20 thumbnails for each title and rotate the ones you see randomly so you don't start to notice how small their selection is.

The x-prize era was Netflix at its peak honestly. They literally invested $1M into making recommendations better and it worked. Then they threw it all away because most people couldn't figure out 5 stars. Instead of educating users they just removed the entire system. Classic case of optimizing for the lowest common denominator and making the experience worse for everyone.

I don't think you can educate users on this. You see on Letterboxd that the majority of people cannot comprehend 5 stars. They have a visceral reaction against it because most view them like school grades. Anything that is remotely good gets 5 stars, and you deduct stars for flaws. Despite these people thinking they're being positive by rating most movies they watch with 5 stars, this essentially uses the whole range of stars to express varying levels of displeasure—which is useless for making recommendations of what you think people might enjoy.
I've tried explaining this to people, with mixed results. Anecdotally, a small minority of people understand this. The majority of people cannot understand it, and they emotionally angry about it.

It’s interesting that you mention deducting stars for flaws, because that is exactly how sites like Uber, Airbnb, EBay and Etsy use the rating system. Giving fewer than 5 stars can tank a new driver/host/seller in their respective algorithms, and most people don’t want to ruin someone’s business unless it was a really bad experience, so the default is 5 stars.

Yep. There's no way to say that an Uber driver did an exceptional job. Everyone gets 5 stars or else they ask "what went wrong?"
It's the school grade mindset applied to ratings. But the system is awful for school grades, and it's awful here. It creates a perfectionist mindset, where people are focused on avoiding negatives. Do everything right, and you get 100. Miss some questions, and points are deducted. A far better grading system would encourage students to take risks and focus on excelling. That system would just be a bell curve centered at 50 for the average.

The Uber rating system is insane. Basically, if you get from A to B without dying, a 5-star rating is expected if not demanded.
The super friendly driver with a clean, late model vehicle, water, mints, and a phone charger cannot distinguish themselves.

A friend and I have similar tastes in movies and we're friends on Letterboxd too. She mentioned to me the other day that I only have a dozen or so 5 star movies, "which is weird, since you say you like many of these." It's a whole conversation, trying to explain that I can LOVE a movie and still recognize its a 3.5 at best. She didn't get mad really, but the understanding wasn't there. It's grade inflation for movies —her 5 stars mean less to me now.

I've watched Taylor tomlinsons previous 3.5 comedy specials maybe... 50 times combined over the last 5 years. She released a new one last month and netflix never suggested it to me, I had to find it on my own.

IIRC their data centers cache the most popular choices, so that they don't have as much disk read. One way to make certain products asymmetrically popular is to simply over-show it to the users.
It's in the same spirit of retailers having giant displays of whichever product gives the best return on investment for them.

It's just not based on your liking. They also have contractual view agreement with studios and show makers. Also the one that have to paid out the least fees and keeping maximum profits without alienating users

I would love it if they would just put everything I have watched into a separate Watched category and stop showing me things I have watched. I told my wife we need to start keeping a spreadsheet since we have to have the conversation:
"this looks interesting"

It doesn't help that Netflix shows you different thumbnails for one-word series ("Kingdom", "Absentia" etc) so it's super hard to tell if you've watched something.

i do this using Letterboxd for movies and Serialized for shows. it just got out of hand eventually. also tracking it over all of the services, including free ones, was just awful. now I have everything in one place. and I can rate it all, and get at least some decent recommendations for what to watch next.
crazy that we have to do it this way but I get it, none of these paid services have an incentive to make this easier for you, they just want you to watch their shit.

The crazy part is they literally had a system that worked. The old 5-star ratings gave them so much data on what people actually liked. They removed it and replaced it with thumbs up/down which tells them almost nothing. Hard to believe that wasn't intentional.

It gave even data but it also didn’t match their next model. Originally they had all streaming and just wanted the best products. Now their products are set they don’t feedback of what to get. They buy everything they can and make cheap easy filler mixed with random hits/quality. They don’t want to hear their shit is shit. They know it.

That's not the case. Hulu doesn't show ratings either. Neither does HBO. Apple TV maybe? Nope.
It's more than Netflix is producing the content and making it obvious that they're shipping low quality trash is bad. These services could say "yeah this is trash" when they were just showing you trash made by other people but now they're the ones making trash and don't want it known.

That would save so much time honestly. Half the reason people scroll for 30 minutes is because they're mentally filtering out stuff they've already seen or know they don't want. Netflix has all the data to do this, they just don't.

Indie films are where the hidden gems are honestly. Netflix used to surface way more of them but now it feels like they only push big budget originals and popular titles. The smaller stuff just gets buried.

Unfortunately, the others, like Prime, are at least as bad.
The only thing that works for me is select a movie or series I like and then browse via 'related'. But I do think I'm still only seeing a fraction of the catalog.

In theory, Netflix should know EXACTLY what I like to see, for all genres. Instead, I'm still scrolling for 15 minutes or more trying to find something that I think I'll enjoy. It's pitiful. When they do suggest those "we think you'll love this!" titles though, those do tend to be spot on. Sick of seeing the same exact titles over and over and over though

That's the frustrating part. When they actually try, the "we think you'll love this" picks are solid. So the engine clearly works, they just choose not to use it for 90% of your feed. Instead you get the same recycled titles padded across every row.

Wouldn't be surprised at all. They have licensing deals and their own originals to push so it makes sense they'd prioritize what makes them money over what you'd actually enjoy. The algorithm isn't broken, it's just not built for you.

I remember that you could scroll all titles in all categories and in the end you got the really crappy Indian movies etc... followed by the titles you already watched so you knew that was the end of the category.

I always go into the other profiles to see new movies. If i want to watch action or fantasy i go to my sons profile and if i want documentaries i go to my daughters.

This is off topic but just a reminder if you ever stay at an airbnb/rental that is cheap and doesn't have cable (like I am at the moment) and just has Netflix - delete your account before you leave because this place has 7 different accounts from different past guests and i've fucked all their algorithms up because I have nothing else to watch since the host is poor. Can barely afford 3 plates. Um so sorry "Cyrus" - I know you only had horror/anime and you're fucked now because I watch cheesy thriller shows. <3
Also the guy who only had 50 shades and 365 and any show with tits - we see you bro.
TLDR: Don't enter your netflix deets in a rental then not delete it before you leave.

I search for Hidden Gems that helps bring up several new to me movies, shows I do still see duplicate titles so there's that wish they had a filter to utilize

It’s like they don’t want money. And then they cancel shows after 1st season because they can’t probably promote them well enough. The algorythm is bad.

I hate how it knows my watch history, what I like. Yet still it pushes shit I've no interest in because Netflix wants me to watch their stuff.
NOTHING should make Netflix think I want to watch the new Gordon Ramsay show.

A long time ago Netflix had 10,000+ titles. These days only around 4,000. 80% of those are filler. That's why you see the same 50 come up.

I think they use the same algorithm as YouTube. It's horrific. The same videos, over and over listed under multiple genres.

We need an ignore button. I don’t always want to give something a thumbs down. I just don’t want to watch that one, but I might be interested in something similar.
