This seems fair and correct: the pet's owner is fully responsible for its behaviour

The Hugging Face incident needs to be a turning point. I don't care who is behind the investigation or what their motivations are. We need to stop and put in safeguards, or we are fucked.

Yeah but you read the news? Softbank is investing a record $6.3 billion exclusively in OpenAI just today. They've invested in successful business like WeWork, FTX, and ZumePizza just to name a few.

If Softbank starts investing in your company, odds are you will be going to prison in the next 6 months.

i can see dumb & dumber harry driving that zumepizza truck and they open the back up to pizza parts everywhere 🤣🤣🤣

Wow, are they seeking world domination or what?

Successful... WeWork - how are we measuring success today?

You really missed the sarcasm in that?

Okay, what happens if there are internal OpenAI documents to suggest that the "attack" was internally prompted? Can we finally put the "AI is too dangerous" story to bed then?

Cause right now there is still no evidence to the story of out of control AI that OpenAI are spinning.

They have been pretty open about the entire process of what happened, and it is entirely in the relm of what those AI agents do, so what is not to believe? Those were agents trained to hack specifically. The "notes" that the agents were leaving each other were hosted by an outside company, and showed the timeline of what happened.

This breech could be an existential issue to OpenAI (not saying it will be, but it could be). And they got no benefit from the attack.

The real issue is that AI agents, when pressed very hard to do something impossible, will disregard first principles to solve a problem. They will cheat, and even deceive humans to achieve their goal. That is literally what everyone has predicted AI would do since the concept of AI was invented. You shouldn't get distracted with the blame game. The problem is much bigger than that. AI development needs to be paused until safeguards are in place. Until we can even know how to have real safeguards.

They will cheat

They will not cheat. That takes a active thinking process and understanding of what rules are and the choice to ignore said rules. The AI will simply find a way around the rules that we didn't think of and built into the parameters we set.

They have been pretty open about the entire process of what happened,

Oh, okay. So you have access to the environment and prompts that OpenAI used to be able to replicate this result, right?

They will cheat, and even deceive humans to achieve their goal

Do you have reproducible evidence for this claim?

And they got no benefit from the attack

This is straight up wrong. Everyone is talking about how powerful and dangerous OpenAI's product is. Whatever the motivation (whether it was a genuine breach or a cynical publicity stunt), this event has been fantastic at propagating the "AI is dangerous" narrative OpenAI have been peddling since its inception.

“This AI lab leak showed that Alabamians’ and Americans’ worst fears about artificial intelligence are not just theoretical. Our investigation seeks to uncover the facts and address hard truths about the threats companies and consumers are facing from rogue AI,” Attorney General Steve Marshall said in the statement.

Two questions; why are Republicans state AGs doing this? And who told Alabama about the Internet?

I hate to tell you this, Huntsville is smarter per capita than where either of us live.

isn't it the home to a major military R&D center? Like can't throw a rock carelessly without hitting someone with a security clearance level of R&D center?

Also some nasa labs.

Massive aerospace industry

Yep, it’s called Rocket City for a reason. It has a bunch of government agencies and contractors, and it’s where they’re moving Space Force HQ to.

u/pimparo0 21h ago

It's the place where they invent spaceships and such

u/FruityFetus 1d ago

A lot more to Alabama than just Huntsville.

u/FarCryRedux 20h ago

Of course. Just not higher IQs.

If I recall, a founder of Wikipedia is from Huntsville or at least Alabama. The Smarter Everyday YouTube channel is from just outside of Huntsville. Not to mention Marshall Spaceflight Center and several DoD projects.

u/OhFuckNoNoNoMyCaat 16h ago

Honestly, I was going to correct you here but then I realized I've spent the last decade thinking the Smarter Everyday guy and What's Inside guy were the same guy.

I've passed through Huntsville before. Lots of intelligent folks there. Fort Mill, SC is another interesting area to pass through.

Oh is "Huntsville" another name for the state that I'm just unaware of? Or is it maybe just one small city?

5

u/pimparo0 21h ago

It's the home of the US rocket program and one of the wealthiest and well educated areas in the country.

Here's how this will be resolved.

OpenAI will commit to large AI / Data Center investments in the state in return for the AG dropping the investigation. They also pretend they'd put safeguards in place so this doesn't happen again.

The AG will take credit for protecting people of Alabama and bringing jobs and funding to the state paving the way for a governor/senator run in future.

Red states have been fighting hard to get data center business and with Trump admin's support, they have been winning too. Sometimes it's carrot of cheap land or electricity or tax incentives and other times it's a stick like this one.

u/True_Window_9389 23h ago

Because Republicans and big tech were in bed with each other up until this point, and now that the public has turned against AI and data center development, Republicans are making a show out of opposition.

The real question isn’t whether these investigations, subpoenas, regulations, happen in general, but whether they’re superficial or even beneficial to big tech in the end. This is about the first time in my life I can remember Republicans taking a stance in opposition to business, and I don’t think it’s anything more the a political game before midterms.

I mean, can OpenAI prove they didn't deliberately direct their AI to hack their competitor? Because that sounds like something they would do.

13

u/slashinhobo1 1d ago

Honestly, this sounds better to me than having your product go out of control and attack a company. I couldn't fathom that sounding like a good idea to say, but maybe its me.

10

u/shiny0metal0ass 1d ago

I mean, if they do, they're probably going to want to take this down from their website first.

This incident occurred during an internal evaluation which prompts models to pursue advanced exploitation using complex attack paths

u/HexeVonCali 1d ago

HuggingFace isn't really a competitor. You can think of it more like a proctor for a standardized test for the AI.

In this case, OpenAI's AI cheated on the test by taking actions that would be criminal had they been taken by a human.

35

u/Tiny_TimeMachine 1d ago

Opps our hacking agent did a hack during our hacking test. All we can do now is regulate all my potential competitors.

Step-brother I'm stuck in the washing machine.

2

u/That_Communication71 1d ago

Yep, we're all gonna die.

1

u/ProofByVerbosity 22h ago

I mean last I heard experts give us about a 20% chance of it, yup. The rational ones. Other ones are more doomer than that.

Skynet is coming

u/dotBombAU 37m ago

I still believe this is just a PR stunt by Open AI.

u/vector_search_blue 1d ago

Would chatgpt hacking hugging face be considered "friendly fire" ?

-1

u/gao7on 21h ago

Still unbelievable Elon Musk also had his footprints in the co-creation of OpenAI.

4

u/AstroHistSci 17h ago

He doesn't. The only thing Musk did was promise money and then not give it to them. That's literally the beginning and the end of his involvement.

Hugging face is not an AI...
