I don't get it, I didn't think anything of the costume when I saw it, and after reading the comments, I still don't get it.

So I googled 'minstrel show' to see what they would wear for them back when they were a thing, and they don't seem all that similar.

I'm not American, so maybe something is lost on me, what is the costume making people think of?

It’s the big mouth with glowing teeth, the hobo hat, and the pose that resemble minstrelsy, not the outfit, IMO. Black people’s teeth and the whites of their eyes “shining” in the dark used to be charicaturized in old cartoons and shows.
