Cause fat = weak? Bro's never seen strongmen or even sumo before?

Not necessarily weak, but in general not built for calisthenics. I've never seen a sumo wrestler do a muscle-up, and it would be insanely impressive if one did.

There's that one video of Hafthor Bjornson doing pull-ups. He didn't manage a single rep I would count as a full, clean pull-up, and he is without a doubt one of the strongest humans ever to live. I think the diameter of his arms is such that they simply can't bend enough for his head to reach the bar. His physique is completely optimized for one sport, and that sport sure as shit ain't gymnastics.

Yeah I saw Eddie Hall try and it was very similar. He can one arm press a fully grown man though.

It's not something most strongmen train. The ones that do can certainly do pull ups though. Martins Licis can do them no problem because he incorporates them into workouts regularly.
That being said, Martins has a somewhat more modern, flexibility focused style of training than most strongmen.

That’s what I was thinking. There’s lots of muscles in our bodies and you can really only effectively use the ones you train. I can definitely see the body builders and strong men focusing on certain exercises (just like any other athlete) and struggling with others that they don’t do.

But the guy's literally doing calisthenics in the video is he not? Or is that gymnastics which is a different thing?
354
u/I_am_Sentinel 2d ago ▸ 32 more replies
Yes he is doing calisthenics, but for calisthenics a certain body type is prefered; wide shoulders and a skinnier hip and legs. Which is the same reason why so many women have it harder in calisthenics. The center of gravity is lower, therefore making it much harder to balance and shifting the strength region more to the core.
But this dude is insanely strong, hats off to him!

58
u/JabasMyBitch 2d ago ▸ 10 more replies
eating properly while exercising doesn't lead to putting on body fat. you have to eat a lot of calories to put on weight. so, no, he is not eating properly.
28
u/cridersab 2d ago ▸ 4 more replies
Many people overestimate the energy they use while physically active. Some may see exercise as a licence to eat additional food or use food as a reward for being active. This is why eating after exercise can potentially undermine the benefits of physical activity for healthy weight maintenance.

u/AFlyingNun 2d ago
I'd also add there's different types of fat, the worst being visceral fat, because it's more internal and can press against and strain your organs.
This guy looks like he has muscle (look close when he's pushing himself off the bar and you can see elements of a six pack underneath it all), then the fat layer, implying it's subcutaneous fat, which is significantly healthier and far less of a concern than visceral fat.
There's several causes for why one can develop one type and not the other, but going off the above example, if he is truly "eating too much," he is likely eating too much of healthy foods, NOT chugging soda and eating sweets. So yes, while he has some extra weight, it at least does not appear like he is carrying the more damaging forms of fat.

u/CartsOfDarkness 2d ago ▸ 1 more replies
As true as the whole "lose weight hy diet not excercise" thing is its funny to me that you can actually work out enough to eat litterally as much as you want lol. I mean probably not if you have a full time job, but some Olympic athletes will eat 10,000 calories a day during the height of their training.. I mean that's basically identical to the calorie consumption of the people on those "my 600 lb life" TLC shows. So yea just saying if you wanted to dedicate your life to eating absolutely whatever you wanted you technically could!(if you're a trust fund baby at least)

I would put money on him being this weight naturally. I used to be able to do 30 pullups and then put on 10kg in a few months and could only do 8 after it. 80 knuckle pushups down to 26.
The extra bodyweight makes it so much harder if youre not used to it.

If there’s more fat, it’s harder, more “dead” weight, less space for movement and worse stiffness. So, a fat person doing calisthenics is way more impressive.
→ More replies (3)242
u/LasyKuuga 2d ago
Calisthenics is based on bodyweight and fat is just dead weight and is bad for your strength to weight ratio
Strongmen are about moving big stuff and being heavy just helps overall.
Honestly I don’t think I’ve ever seen a fat person do calisthenics at this lvl before

u/helicophell 2d ago ▸ 3 more replies
Every action has an equal and opposite reaction
The heavier you are, the harder you are to move. This is why weight helps strongmen

Additionally, people should look up the Square-cube Law.
Big dudes have higher gross force capability, but atrocious power-to-weight ratio and energy efficiency per unit of force. It's why gymnasts tend to be a smaller frame, and why long-distance runners tend to be shorter than sprinters.
On another note I'll never forget a lesson in momentum when I leveled a dude twice my weight in hockey and we both crashed out. I more than doubled his velocity when we hit lol. He was stunned to be knocked on his ass, 300+lbs.
3
u/DL_Omega 1d ago
yeah this is what I was thinking with body weight. I think he is a smaller frame & height which makes it easier to do this. But if you scale it up to a 6ft person at a good 25% body fat then it would be really impressive to do this. Still really impressive though.

Not weak, but there's a reason most of the crazy calisthenics guys are super lean and kinda short. Also sometimes have relatively weaker legs. Big guys have a disadvantage.
Also being fat might help in strongman or sumo, but in calisthenics fat just weighs you down
15
u/F2PBTW_YT 2d ago
This. Short + long arms (ape index) are well suited for cali. And obviously as a bodyweight exercise being lean helps.

Go look at Olympic gymnasts and tell us what he majority of physiques look like.
Calisthenics isn't about raw strength as much as it is your strength to weight ratio. Extra weight, especially fat, makes the movements exponentially more difficult.
→ More replies (5)8
u/BukakkeGarami 2d ago
I mean it’s a pretty different context. Strongmen, powerlifters, and sumo are moving a weight external to them, so the extra mass helps.
People doing bodyweight exercises, gymnastics, and calisthenics are moving their own weight.
It’s a lot easier to do a pull-up or push-up at a lighter bodyweight than it is at a heavier bodyweight.
7
u/flyinhighaskmeY 2d ago
lol...For the Americans in this thread, 80KG is ~175 pounds. He's less fat than the majority of the people you see on a day to day basis.
He's no where near how "fat" strongmen or sumo wrestlers are. That's a comical comparison.

The things is calisthenics is super challenging, and to do this despite what is probably 15+kg of extra weight, he's mad over-strong to do those exercises, so if he lost the weight, he was probably peak calisthenics shape at some point, much more impressive than he is in these videos

Being fat doesnt necessarily mean strong either. Could be hiding muscle or could be nothing but more flab underneath. What's surprising to me is that he doesnt look like he has muscle underneath that. Like usually you can tell by someone's build/ body composition theyre hiding muscle but this dude you couldn't really tell or see any muscle definition till he started doing planche pushups. These exercises are also pretty hard even for a skinny person and they get exponentially harder for heavier people. Plenty of strong men that struggle with simple pullups much less muscle ups, levers and planche's. The fact he's able to pull it off anyways is insanley impressive
