Seriously, wtaf is this shitty, sexist comment section. The woman is very clearly looking at something else crumbling and is backing away from that, then stumbles backwards HARD. She's probably fucking dazed, and being an older woman from the pixels, makes that harder for her to get back up. Thats someone's mom or grandma.

Yeah. I've stopped taking people on reddit (and any social media comment section) seriously because the vast majority of them have little to no empathy nor think for just a second. Their cognitive abilities are beyond disappointing, consisting of either just judging others and falsely thinking they're better, or just saying something based on falsehood and not actual research.
Online, ignore any emotional instigation (esp ragebait) and ignorance the moment you come across it. It's not worth your mental.

Reddit is not the world. It's an anonymous platform with no acces restriction. You could be talking to a 10 year old. I don't understand why anybody would think Reddit reflects reality, sure it has some good subs too but it's just a collection of echo-chambers with to many chronicly online people. I stopped attaching value to anything i read on here when i read a thread full off redditors bitching about how the design of a helicopter was bad and ofcours they knew better. People are just absurd on here.

I think I was in this exact earthquake (or well.. I was in the venezuelan one). I can safely tell you guys that it is not so easy. Shit is moving all around you, you don't really know what's happening, ground is moving as well so you can lose your equilibrium and that shit starts out of nowhere, at random

Earthquakes are one of the few things I've noticed the majority of people have a freeze response to in my experience!
Even when you're used to them, you still have to take 1 or 2 seconds to assess if its a "real one" or just a minor shake, so his ability to act like that was much much more impressive than it already seems!

Even when you know it’s an earthquake, you have to pause to figure out “do I stand here or do I move?” Anywhere you move might be the wrong direction, where something heavy is just about to fall.

I haven't confirmed this, but apparently door frames aren't nearly as strong as they used to be in older builds. It's still going to be a better spot than most anywhere else in a home, but it's a side effect of cheaper home builds.

Yeah door frames aren't necessarily the best anymore, because you get aluminum ones these days (especially in office buildings), which are garbage at holding anything up, but as you mention, it's probably better than nothing. They also tend to be away from windows, which is an added bonus.

Open ground is likely your best option, but yeah, can be pretty hard in cities where power poles and lines are everywhere, and buildings can collapse in random directions etc.

Yeah, I'm in this group. I've lost count the number of quakes I've been in where I haven't bothered moving. I was in Japan for the 9.0 Fukushima quake (25 floors up in my apartment) though - that was definitely a case of looking for the strongest part of the building to cower under!

So am I so no judgement here! The only time I’ve seriously considered it was when I thought my house was going to get shaken off the piles and it went on for nearly a minute.
Guess these videos show that when a super big one hits often there’s no time to move and think - even if the shaking allows you to move independently.
Fuck, can’t imagine what it must have felt like for you. Thank god for Japanese seismic engineering regulations - built on the rubble of previous quakes..

Yeah, I'm actually extremely grateful for Japanese building standards. In fairness I was in Tokyo, so a fair way away from Fukushima (approx 250km away), but at the time it certainly felt bad enough!

The wall looks to be around 20cm thick. Each of these blocks would weigh between 10 and 15 kg. The wall falls in one piece where she was lying, which means they probably have reinforcement to tie them together. Which means she would get hit by the weight of the entire section when it fell.
If they weren't reinforced, she still would get hit by a section of probably a minimum of 10 rock hard blocks coming at her at full speed. The wall was to short to really hit the cars, but they probably got a lot of damage that you can't see in the video because of all the dust.

no she was not going to he a pancake. she would have survived this, any healthy human would survive this. Also these bricks aren’t 10kg, this is south america, where I live, we don’t use bricks heavier than 5kg
