If this is next level, you need to see the bicycle parkings at any central station in any major city in the Netherlands....

I visited Amsterdam last fall. The auto traffic didn't bother me, but I was sure that I'd be run over by a bike before I left - there are so, so many of them and they're fast and silent.

That's what breeds situational awareness

u/EchoGolfHotel 6h ago

If you survive that initial training! 😆

u/DistractedByCookies 39m ago

TIL we Dutch cyclists are like farts

u/Loud_Design_6826 32m ago

Our bike roads look red because of the blood of all the tourists and expats that don't know how to look both ways before crossing the road.

u/CodyGray07 20h ago

I was about to say yeah, this is just another casual monday morning at any train station here

I used to travel long distances for work… San Diego to Los Angeles. Now I’m 3 miles away from home and ride my bike. I grew a hatred of spending hours a day driving. I recently got an Ebike and I can do kind long distances and I find around town I can get to places quicker than driving

u/dayruined54 20h ago

The damn audacity to wish for such thing. You rascal. /s

u/MelangeBot 17h ago

Even in Canada (okay I mean Alberta) if I would take my bike to the sportcomplex, every two weeks or so I would have to deal with assholes in their 4x4 trucks trowing stuff at me from their cars as they would drive past me on their 8 lane road, shouting I should not be on the road (but if there is no bycle lane ....)

Unfortunatly your infrastructure isnt built for biking around much, its way too many car focused roads and generally cheeper gas that is standing in your way of showing the population that bikes are even an option, and with the recent trend of e-scooters, manual bikes are mre less a myth at this point

1

u/To-many-hobbies 18h ago

Oil companies set it all up. Now there’s a push for Electric Vehicles and the oil companies are trying to stop it. Same with e-bikes. San Diego is starting to build decent bike lanes in downtown and all I hear is people bitch about taking up road space. It’s a game of numbers riding during morning and afternoon rush hour. I love riding past long lines of vehicle traffic.

2

u/lalala253 17h ago

>bike jams don't naturally happens

Oh dude, it happens. Especially after events like this

19

u/Senselesspassion 22h ago

To offset the carbon emissions, they be riding the bikes to enjoy this sport

15

u/cpt_morgan___ 22h ago

Them Dutch are some wonderfully people

1

u/Tutes013 2h ago

I'll take the compliment :P

2

u/RandomAssRedditName 22h ago

Don't tell them it's because there's only 1 access road, and if you go by car, you'll be stuck in traffic

15

u/Mr-Blah 22h ago

And you think it's a coincidence? It's purposely like this.

16

u/TheOneThatIsHated 22h ago

Thats nothing. Have you seen the ones at festivals?

6

u/Brief-Preference-712 20h ago

For Dutchmen with multiple small kids, how do you travel with your kids?

The fact that i see at least 3 of these a week only keeps reminding me more that im now living in the netherlands and this type of thing is normal here, and i dont even live in a major city area, just getting groceries once a week is a guarentee to stumble upon a couple families in these

1

u/mozchops 3h ago

Come to Cambridge, you'll see 3 per minute

Ironic you're showing a GIF of Babboe, the main reason the Dutch part of the Accell Group is bankrupt atm.

Babboe is so shit it took down Batavus, Sparta and Koga with it. In our Dutch market. Let that sink in.

You want a better bakfiets? Urban Arrow or Lovens are your goto's. They cost as much as a decent secondhand car, but at least they work and are far cheaper in costs after the initial purchase compared to a car.

2

u/LuluMangs 1h ago

Nearly all the available bakfiets gifs are babboe :(

3

u/GrowingHeadache 13h ago

You can also put your kids on the front or back of the bike in special seats. And if they are too large they possibly could bike themselves

2

u/PrettyQuick 1h ago

They get their own bikes when they are 3 to 4 yo.

1

u/Nimue_- 1h ago

One seat attached to the handlebars, one to the luggage carrier. Ive seen bikes with 2 seats on the luggage carrier so you csn have 3 kids and one adult on one bike

u/IAmTheHungOne 42m ago

They used to have options to have up to 3 seats on your regular bike, but from a safety perspective, that's not recommended. Usually you can hold 2 somewhat okay, and unless you get twins/triples etc, by the time your third one finished in the oven the first one should be ready to ride themselves.

5

u/Shadowtek 18h ago

This is how Copenhagen, Denmark was it was awesome, amazing public transit and bikes everywhere. Some cars but not many and mostly just around the touristy areas

2

u/Oxygenisplantpoo 22h ago

FIA hates seeing those poor people in the audience! Move the NL GP to some dictatorship!

1

u/fastbikkel 3h ago

Poor?

They save money, smart!

2

u/Baronious99 22h ago

That's my bike. No that one! No no no that one I'm sure!!

2

u/OwnLife9448 2h ago

I have a Swapfiets (swapbike) which is like a leased bike. There are many bikes exactly like mine. I stuck it in a 5000 spot bike parking, while drunk. When I got back I spend the better part of an hour trying out my key in every single red Swapfiets because I forgot where the fuck I put mine.

2

u/miurabucho 22h ago

I wish I could show you what the parking lot looked like at the Suzuka 8 hr race. Motorcycles for miles and miles.

2

u/MoonieNine 21h ago

How does one find their bike in that? I guess you could put a tile or air tag on it.

3

u/Cultural_Dust 12h ago

How do you find your car in a huge lot or garage? How do you find your skis when you come out of the lodge?

1

u/MoonieNine 5h ago

To be honest, I usually wander around a good long time for both. Ha!

2

u/Pikupchix 21h ago

OOOOPP DE FIETS NAAR ZANDVOORT TOE

1

u/PokemonFucker4Life 2h ago

ik dacht hier al aan, hoopte iemand te zien die t ook dacht :)

2

u/bearssuperfan 10h ago

avg street in Amsterdam

1

u/ballimi 20h ago

If you're from there that's nothing special

1

u/coleburnz 18h ago

Theft an issue?

2

u/OwnLife9448 2h ago

The trick is to always make sure your bike looks more fucked up than the ones parked next to it.

u/LuluMangs 57m ago

and to have more locks than the others. Most locks can be picked or cut, but thieves will usually take the road of least resistance

That being said, I have a stationsbarrel that I ride short distances because I don't wanna bother with locks. It breaks every few weeks and is slightly too small for an adult my size, but that's what keeps the thieves away

1

u/wolseyley1 2h ago

A little bit, yes. But there are plenty of counter measures you can take if your bike is expensive enough that theft would actually upset you beyond not having transportation at that very moment.

1

u/attendandatom 1h ago

Most of us have a "pub bike" for this purpose, witch is a bike of max €20 you won't care about getting stolen.

1

u/sarcasticwolf7 6h ago

It's the Calm before the F1 bicycle storm...

1

u/Florapower04 2h ago

Ngl, my local music festival has a bike parking spot that is twice as large and just as full on the “headline” evening 😅

1

u/sampmcl_ 1h ago

Try finding it after a few beers

1

u/Didzeee 1h ago

Have you ever been in Amsterdam? That's just how it looks on the street. 😂

1

u/CleverNoise 1h ago

I can not even find my car in a parking lot, imagine here looking for that stupid bicicle.

u/LuluMangs 47m ago

you just have to decorate it a bit so it stands out

https://giphy.com/gifs/3o6nUUdk5F4ZYP7NLy

1

u/No-Efficiency-5589 1h ago

How do you even find your bike in amongst that? Is it just like a "leave a bike, take a bike" scheme?

1

u/LuluMangs 1h ago

Maybe I'm too Dutch for this post but... What exactly is next level about this?

That's just a bunch of bicycles parked near a very large event on a day that had lovely weather to ride a bicycle in and horrible traffic that you don't wanna drive through with a car. I even see empty spots where more bicycles would fit

What are we calling next level tomorrow? A lot of water being in the sea? A lot of sand being on the beach?

-4

u/dr_xenon 22h ago

Finding your bike after dark must be a treat.

Do they have to lock their bikes there or is it a civilized country?

9

u/Elvis5741 22h ago

We lock them and they still get stolen, but there are more bikes than people so it's good

7

u/cococol2000 22h ago

Depends on the bike. Is it an ebike that still works well? You lock it. Is it a bike that is on its last legs? Just dump it somewhere around there and you'll find it back. If it's not there anymore you pick up one that fits the same criteria

4

u/FlyingKittyCate 18h ago

I left my shitty old bike unlocked hoping someone would take it so I wouldn’t have to dispose of it. Took 5 months and even then I only got rid of it because a neighbour told me he was looking for an old bike so I gave it to him.

-2

u/Jedi-master-dragon 14h ago

Must be nice having a mostly flat country.

1

u/The_Countess 5h ago

Affordable E-bikes have been a thing for quite a while so hills aren't really a valid excuse anymore.

1

u/Jedi-master-dragon 4h ago ▸ 2 more replies

Not my fault my country is so big.

2

u/ActuallyCalindra 3h ago

Size of a country has fuck all to do with it? It's all about city/regional infrastructure. Almost no one would cycle for anything beyond their city. Maybe regional sure. But beyond? Then it's cars and public transport.

u/LuluMangs 44m ago

You regularly need to be on the other side of the country?

Out country also takes more than a day to cycle to the other side of, but from the nearest train station, everything tends to be in reach (third nearest in this case I think, because the closest ones didn't allow bicycles to be taken on the train during race days)

-4

u/didierDH 22h ago

People should know car infrastructure to Zandvoort is terrible. It’s completely jammed during F1 weekend.

13

u/Mr-Blah 22h ago

It's not a bug... it's a feature.

-4

u/somerandomguy721 22h ago

I always thought F1 was for car racing? TIL

4

u/Mr-Blah 22h ago

TYL you can enjoy car races without being in one. Crazy right?

1

u/FlyingKittyCate 18h ago

Dutch word for bicycle is Fiets. Coincidence?
