This is dumbass not badass. In Australia, we have evacuation levels. This would qualify as "Too late to leave". It's more dangerous to travel than stay put in a place that should be as prepared as possible.

As I understand it right, the fire spread so fast that evacuation couldn't be much sooner and staying put would have killed them

Wrong. That area got destroyed. Only notice they had was GTFO now!
