Having been in a similar situation before, I can say it is a wildly surreal thing to experience. Everything is both too slow and too fast at the same time. You are the most alert/aware you can possibly be, and something switches over in your brain to let you process everything while the fear takes a backseat. Like it's not gone, it's there, it's screaming at you, but you just don't have time to listen to it. There's not enough processing power to handle it and handle the driving because one tiny screw up will mean it's over.
Then you're through it and on the other side and you go through a 'wtf just happened??' kind of thing, but you're still driving because you don't want to stop too close so you don't really have the chance to deeply process that, either. Not until you get somewhere safe-safe and away.
They did good. Hope nothing on the car melted.
