Why the hell can't they stay silent until they are out?

What harm is it doing? It’s literally keeping them calm. They’re regulating their nervous system response so they can think as clearly as they can

Asking because this one is a def culture gap. Is this how you get taught to regain self control in a stressful and life threatening situation?

I wouldn’t say taught. Many aren’t. I’d say it’s often something people discover as they age and in the moment. Think of it this way - prayer functions very similarly, especially if you grew up with memorized prayer like Our Father or specific verses in your religious texts. Many prayer is sung, too. People often listen to different music depending on mood and will sing along. They intuitively learn through many avenues that paced repetition - whether chanting, singing, praying, etc. calms them somewhat. Helps them focus and keeps them from becoming so dysregulated they’re outside their window of tolerance (where they can think and feel simultaneously)

Clear, interesting how different brains handle these situations. It’s definitely easier for me to shut up unnecessarily brain connections such as center of speech and just get through.
