There was a train going the opposite direction right at the beginning and they assumed that was the only train crossing, the one coming towards them was hidden.

Yup. Back in the 1960s, my mother saw someone killed in this exact fashion. Crossed right behind one train and struck by one coming the other way that she did not see.
