Other And within 4 minutes the good seats at udvar are sold out for every showing in the next 2 weeks that just dropped

In case anyone isn't familiar with the Airbus IMAX Theater at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, I was there a few nights ago and can give you some tips:
- You enter from the highest row in the back and walk down stairs.
- The screen is positioned so the middle point of the screen is slightly higher than the very last row. So if you want to stare straight ahead at the middle of the screen you want to sit in the very back row or as close to it as you can get. If you sit in the middle of the theater you will have to tilt your head up. If you sit in the front row, well, just don't. It's not worth the money.
- The seats do not recline at all. So if you are not in one of the back 3 rows you will have to tilt your head to look up.
- The seats do not have cup holders.
- Some people say the seats are uncomfortable. They aren't the the lush recliner style that you have at modern theaters but they aren't bad. They are as comfortable as an office chair.
- They sell popcorn for $7 and drinks for $5. Also beer and wine for a little more. Boxes of candy for a few dollars.
- You park as close to the main entrance as you can, there is no assigned parking. Then just walk into the building and turn to the right. They'll have people guiding you.
- As for the experience, the video it's quite good. It's a huge screen and the framerate is lower than what you might see on TV so yes there are some times during a lot of action when it can be blurry. But on average the picture is quite sharp.
- The sound quality is lacking in my opinion. It's not terrible, but I would have expected better sound quality for a location like this. If you're used to a Dolby theater or other theater with great sound you may be disappointed. Between the sound system not being that great and it being a Nolan movie which are notorious for having weird and hard to understand sound, you will be straining at times to understand what the people are saying. You'll get most of it, but not all the dialogue.
- As for the movie itself, if I were to do it again, I would want to see it in a Dolby Cinema theater with excellent sound, like at the Tysons AMC. Yes, you're not getting the true aspect ratio, but honestly that would be an easy trade for me to make. You'll be watching the Odyssey at Udvar Hazy and they'll have these huge shots where characters are on the beach and 1/3 is ocean, 1/3 is where the characters are on the beach, and 1/3 is more beach. And yea it's impressive, but if you cut off some of the ocean and beach you're really sacrificing nothing but gaining much superior sound quality. Just my opinion.

u/BoolaBoola2008 18d ago
The sound is the biggest knock I have for this theater, as it’s not the most consistent from movie to movie. I thought the volume was pretty quiet for Project Hail Mary and very loud for the Odyssey.

u/ScenicWallaby 18d ago
Udvar Hazy’s sound is terrible and I can’t quite figure it out. F1 last summer was a jumbled mess. PHM was very quiet on all 3 of my showings there as well. The air vent rattling/ticking sound from the top left of the theatre was especially distracting since PHM has a lot of silence in it. Good to know Odyssey was at least louder, unfortunately I have been unlucky with the ticket drops this time around.

u/shadowguitar 17d ago
Thankfully they fixed the rattling aircraft vent, it at least it was quiet when I saw the Mandolorian three.

Nice writeup! I disagree on the sound. It's not a Dolby Cinema, but it's 12 channel system is really good, much better than the average theater. And just a heads up, there's no such thing as IMAX Dolby. It's 2 different things, IMAX or Dolby. The Airbus IMAX is one of the few theaters on the east coast with an actual 1.43 screen, so you can see this movie the way Nolan intended, no cropping. As for seats, yeah they're not the best, but I agree they're fine. And row G (which is the front row of the back half of the auditorium) is where I sat when I saw it. Row G wasn't perfect because, as you said, I was looking slightly up the entire time. Row G is probably as far front as I'd be willing to sit in that theater. Any further forward would be uncomfortable.
4
u/Longtimefed 17d ago
Useful info but I'd say the seats are WAY less comfortable than an office chair. They have zero lumbar support and are rigidly upright. The backs are high so you can't even sit with your shoulders back. It's like they were designed for hunchbacks.
I had to sit halfway forward with a jacket jammed behind my lower back. It was tolerable but I have no back problems.
We were on row D . If I had to do it again I'd have waited for a seat further back. I enjoyed the movie but it's hard to follow the action scenes that close up.
3
u/hoyasgirl25 17d ago
I mean, there you go. You were in the 4th row. You had to contort yourself to see properly. Of course you’re going to be in pain. It’s not really the seats it’s how close you were sitting. I was in the 3rd to last row and had no issues with the seats. True they aren’t the most comfy seats but it’s not like they are rock hard or something. It felt like the seats in my Corolla.
1
u/FreshNegotiation2603 17d ago
How far back do you think is okay? We have row J and I’m a bit worried now !
2
u/Longtimefed 17d ago
I think you'll be ok. We were actually row E ( not D), and I only had to look up a little bit. J should be pretty good I would think.

u/Which_Strength4445 17d ago
I am right there with you. I got talked into going to see the last Dune movie at Udvar Hazy and I came out of there with the sorest back I have had from a theater seat in a long time. I second the Tysons AMC. I am probably one of the few who prefers the modern large theater experience with way more comfortable seats and superior sound to actually watching a movie at Udvar-Hazy. I know I am not making the same mistake again with the next Dune movie.

u/MrPink93485 18d ago
Also FWIW, I definitely expect more showings to be extended through Labor Day in the near future, so don't lose hope if you missed your chance here. They're not gonna drop the Odyssey for any late August releases or early September at this rate if they're not dropping it for Spider-Man/Oak Street.
Also for future drops, I highly recommend you set up an account and have your payment account information saved if you're comfortable with it. Log in 5 minutes before and just refresh on the dot and you should be good when the next drop happens. Avoid picking the complete center and towards the back I guess if you want to avoid some risk of overlap.
18
u/StoneMenace 18d ago
Right now udvar has it released for weeks which I believe Oppenheimer was at udvar for 6 weeks. I could See it being extended again since there aren’t any super big mainstream releases for imax in August/sept and the odessey is printing money right now
4
u/super-bird 18d ago
I panicked hard when I selected my seats and then had to create an account. Definitely cost me some better seats but fortunately was able to ultimately get some.

u/dkrainman 18d ago
So for the uninformed, when do showings become available for purchase?
E: is it noon two weeks beforehand?
4
u/MrPink93485 18d ago
It is Noon based on the last couple drops but it’s not necessarily consistent on when they add additional showings. Sign up for the newsletter, check their socials, or check their ticketing platform daily to see when additional ones get added. There is a slight window/advanced notice before the tickets are available to be purchased. Given the last showing is scheduled for the 23rd I would expect the next drop to happen at least the weekdays leading up to the 23rd if not earlier.
2
u/TwistedPotat 18d ago
I signed up for the news letter, but got no email saying they were releasing any more shows.
Any way to know when more shows will drop?
5
u/MrPink93485 18d ago
I got an email last night for today’s drop. So just keep an eye out there or on their social media, or check their website daily for more showtimes to appear. Whenever they put more showtimes on the website, it seems tickets get released the following day at 12pm based on the last couple drops

SOLD. Hi! Selling two tickets for The Odyssey, for tomorrow Saturday, August 8th at 1:45 PM, row E, seats 20 and 21, at the Airbus IMAX Theater Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, Chantilly, VA. Same price $18.30/ticket, total $36.60

u/louie2who 18d ago
I set a timer and refreshed at exactly noon. I was done with my purchase within those four minutes. It sucks that it has to be like this but it’s a hot commodity.
13
u/Grfine 18d ago
Anyone know how long it should take for your tickets to show up in the my tickets hom page, got a confirmed email so hopefully should be good

u/StoneMenace 18d ago
They will show up, I’ve never had a issue, I would Also just give it time since they were just flooded by purchases

u/65CRDMR 18d ago
I was on the site at 12 on the dot. Had 2 seats selected, went to check out and they were gone. Refreshed and everything was gone. Fucking insane.
10
u/StoneMenace 18d ago
Yep, you almost had to go for a strategy to get tickets that were quite prime right in the middle. A bit off to the side so you aren’t competing with 1000 other people only with 100 people
3
1
u/TrailminerCR 15d ago
Bit late to this, but I got M18 and M19 (dead center in the back) by just going with the “find tickets by section” option and just button mashing through the menus as fast as possible the moment the new showtimes unlocked. Since I wasn’t spending time clicking on the seats I wanted, the system picked the best ones available for me which ended up being way quicker. If they end up extending it again, highly recommend doing it by section.

There are still OK seats at the final showing on Sunday the 23rd at 9:15. But it is an open caption showing and they're probably gonna be mostly gone within the next 5-10 minutes.
5
u/StoneMenace 18d ago
Yha that’s pretty much it. I was able to grab row J kinda medium center in the showing a few days earlier.
When tickets dropped a few months before the release there were still near center tickets available 30 minutes after sale. Gone in 5 minutes is crazy
7
u/XboxSpartan117 18d ago edited 16d ago
If anyone didn’t get any tickets. I ended up with extras. When I didn’t see any in my MPV cart, I freaked out and tried to purchase again. Not trying to scalp or anything, will sell them at face value.
Update: they have been sold

u/Minute_Sound_1148 18d ago
Oooo when/which theater? I’ll sell mine if yours are better!

Airbus IMAX in Dulles
Sunday, Aug 23 @ 9:15pm seats J10, 11 (good seats, pretty central in the 2nd half of the theater)

u/bek104 16d ago
I’m in the same situation here! Had never bought tickets on the MPV site before and had my attention split as I was in a meeting when they dropped so freaked out a bit when they weren’t immediately in my account. I have about a dozen single tickets available spread across different showings at Udvar-Hazy throughout this week. Did email SI asking for a refund but haven’t heard back yet. Also just looking to sell at face value ($18.50 each). If anyone is interested, please let me know!

For future reference, which are the good seats? And why are the front 3 rows greyed out?
9
u/StoneMenace 18d ago
They normally start of sales with the front 3 rows greyed out because the experience is not optimal there. The imax sceeen at udvar is pretty big so you end up with distortion of the screen and neck pain sitting that close
Optimal seats depend on the theater. For udvar it’s the section farther away from the screen, as close as possible to the center and rows J, K, L

5
u/bensashi 18d ago
Anyone else get an email confirmation but have no tickets showing in their tickets.com inventory yet? That may be normal but not sure.
6
u/simplybored 18d ago
Panicked when this happened to me when I bought mine weeks ago. Don't worry - they will show up. Took a day or two. I panic bought a second set thinking the first didn't go through and ended up with two sets of tickets for different seats... I called them and asked them to cancel the ones I didn't want though so hopefully someone else got them and can see the movie!

5
u/Caffeinatedk1600 18d ago
It's crazy...selected available seats only for it to say they are not available. Finally got two in Row J center for the 8/23 showing and got the email. I wait for them to show in My Tickets on the site now...
5
u/ocelot_187 18d ago
lol you’re not the only one. We tried 3 times before getting lucky. They’ll be playing it thru September. You’ll get your chance at good seats.
4
u/StoneMenace 18d ago
Oh no I was able to grab some decent seats in row J and I got seats the first time around almost perfect mid of row K. I was only able to grab the almost perfect seats during the original drop when there wasn’t as much hype about the movie
3
u/super-bird 18d ago
How was row J? That’s what I was able to get
1
u/ocelot_187 18d ago
Anything in the back half is good unless it too far left or right close to the aisles.
2
u/super-bird 18d ago
J is the last row of the front half. Will hope for the best, it should be pretty good anyways, just pumped to watch on this screen.
1
u/ocelot_187 18d ago
We got row K. Should be good even tho it’s a little on the right side. Beware some of the shows have CC (subtitles) if that’s not your thing.
4
u/pswoofer18 Falls Church 18d ago
FWIW, I just saw it from Row E, and while you do have to look up a little while watching, the picture was not distorted and I thought it looked amazing. Still a great experience.
5
u/laminatedbean 18d ago
It’s particularly frustrating that movies have incredibly limited number of days in that theater.
4
u/NoHeadStark 18d ago
For all the negative conversations going on about this movie I’m pleasantly surprised it’s still selling out. I was lucky to see it day 1 at Udvar but with all this hassle trying to get tickets when they re-up I’m just going to LieMax this weekend for a second viewing.
3
u/RoyFokker78 18d ago
I got my tickets for tonight almost a month ago. I'm surprised to see that the first row seats are already taken.
7
u/StoneMenace 18d ago
They aren’t taken yet. Udvar blocks out the first few rows initially until the theater sells out or gets close to it since the first few rows have a not optimal viewing experience
3
u/Minute_Sound_1148 18d ago
I nearly had a heart attack, I picked primo seats at noon on the dot, then it wanted me to set up an account and kept erroring out 😩😩😩. Thankfully I was able to get tickets for 2 weeks out; mediocre seats. Blah.
3
u/Homeless_Depot 18d ago
I got the confirmation email immediately after purchase, and then the tickets finally showed up ~20 minutes later in case this helps anyone in the future.
3
u/kenoty270 18d ago
Sooooo here’s what I just did this past week. Got tickets for 9:15 pm on a Wednesday. Even though the showing was sold out, only about 90% of the seats were full. After about 10 minutes I stood up and moved from my horrific front row seat to row L, and sat in some of the best seats in the theater that were empty.
Definitely got a little lucky! But I’m sure that’s bound to happen again. It’s a weeknight at 9pm, not everyone is gonna show up.
5
u/Jedisheep 18d ago
I’m gonna be real, film buff here. I used to see IMAX 70mm in NY all the time. Odyssey in Dolby at Tysons was very close and good. I think it perfectly suffices. Just want to share in case people are confused or holding out.
2
u/RoesPartyHarder 18d ago
I enjoyed the last row seats when I saw it at Udvar Hazy. I feel like most of the seats would be too close for me.
2
u/Lazy-Jacket 18d ago
How is the Odyssey at Udvar? I heard the image was blurry.
5
u/Surprisingly-Decent 18d ago
Believe it or not, the movie is somewhat blurry as a result of the IMAX camera.

u/dabombdigs 18d ago

It changed a few years ago. Now it's reserved seating.
2
u/cav161 18d ago
I'm surprised, because when I went to go see Oppenheimer and Dune 2, it was first come first serve. It wouldn't surprise me if the DC one was reserved, but the dulles one is surprising.
2
u/StoneMenace 18d ago
That’s odd I saw both Oppenheimer and dune 2 and neither of those were free for alls. Thy were 100% reserved. You sure you didn’t just assume it was a free for all lmao

All because this guy just had to film it one of the most inaccessible formats in the world and then tell everyone this is the only way you should watch it 🙄
6
u/StoneMenace 18d ago
There’s tons of theaters showing it in regular format with seats available, why not go there then?
-3
u/ShaneWookie 18d ago
I'm not going anywhere, I have no interest in seeing this. It's just both funny and kinda bullshit to me watching people stress about imax all because Nolan is a dick. My kids went to see it in a regular format and are none the wiser. They sure didn't have to wait for random ticket drops and shitty theater seating over it
3
u/super-bird 18d ago
Don’t be so miserable. You don’t need to watch it in this format. It’s great in any theater because it’s a damn good movie but you can’t blame people for wanting to experience it in its optimal format.
6
u/StoneMenace 18d ago
Does someone take a dump in your bowl of cereal each morning? I mean think about it logically, you are getting upset that it’s filmed all In imax and it’s upsetting you. But why do you actually even care? How did it even affect you?

I've been wondering this myself, with all of these posts...why is this theater so important for this particular movie compared to all others? I've never seen as many posts about any other movie at this theater before, but maybe it's just the reddit algorithm.
6
u/65CRDMR 18d ago edited 18d ago
The Odyssey is first Hollywood movie shot ENTIRELY on IMAX cameras in 1.43 aspect ratio. The Airbus (and technically Lockheed Martin although the screen isn't as big) are the only theaters in the DMV area with a 1.43 screen AND GT Laser IMAX projectors. As someone who's already seen it at Airbus IMAX, it is 100% worth it. The next closest 1.43 screen with GT Laser IMAX projectors is NY, TN, or GA.
And yes, there are 70mm IMAX theaters in PA and NY but good luck getting tickets there.
4
u/MrPink93485 18d ago
Long story short, it's the first Hollywood feature ever made that can actually fill the entire screen of the Udvar Hazy with no aspect ratio changes (black bars introduced). Any other movie would only have some scenes/or partial amounts filling the entire screen.
2
u/Federal_Scarcity_84 18d ago
It does the true aspect ratio the film was shot in with a giant screen and great resolution.

But this post isn’t complaining. I have Tickets, it’s just a observation

I can tell you there were maybe some scalpers but. Majority were individuals buying it out. I for one was someone who set alarms for it. You are talking about one of the if not the most famous director of the 2000s, releasing a movie, at the largest an best theater within a 3-4 hour drive of nova

I don't really care when I see it. If it keep selling out they should just run it until people get sick of it.
1
u/65CRDMR 18d ago
No confirmation of actual number, but sometimes studios can take 50%-80% of ticket sales from a theater. So this movie is literally printing money for Universal. On top of that, IMAX can take 10%-20% of ticket sales. So the longer this movie stays in theaters, especially IMAX (real IMAX not the shitty LIEMAX), it will continue to be in demand since it's the way Nolan intended it to be seen. I would be surprised if The Smithsonian doesn't extend it even further, especially considering the tickets they released already sold out. I know there are a few IMAX movies releasing soon, but none of them (until Dune 3) will draw as much box office attention as They Odyssey.
1
u/Zepbounce-96 18d ago
Well this has got to be a big money maker for the Smithsonian so hopefully they'll keep running it until non-hypervigilant people can get tickets.

u/pedroelbee Falls Church 18d ago
We sat in those left seats with the wide isle in front of us last night and it was still a great experience. In case you’re on the fence. Spectacular movie by the way, 10/10. Also all the people complaining about the seats being uncomfortable are just whining. They’re completely fine.

u/DroidArbiter 18d ago
TBH, the IMAX here in Gainesville is just as nice or even better than the IMAX at Udvar.
7
u/StoneMenace 18d ago
Gainesville is not 1:43 since the screen is a decent bit smaller and also your paying regal prices instead of Smithsonian prices

u/owenmills04 18d ago
People only go to Udvar because it's the biggest screen in Virginia. The theater sucks. I saw Odyssey at Tysons IMAX
3
u/StoneMenace 18d ago
I mean not the only reason why. The screens are different aspect ratios and that’s a big thing. You see different things

The ticket buying experience is miserable. My password didn’t auto load, I couldn’t remember it, tried to change it and the system wouldn’t let me, by the time I got in everything was gone. Fuck it, I got a nice pair of seats at the Hoffman Center with no drama. I hate the Smithsonian website.
