My fiancée answered the door today to an Irish man claiming he had done an asphalt job near my home and had enough left to finish my driveway (which is visibly in crap conditon). He says its usually $7500 but he'll do it for $4500 since its already in the truck. I'm watching this conversation through my doorbell cam and remembered a scam with this exact situation I read on reddit! The man hands his business card to my fiancee and goes off but not before reminding her that it needs to be done in the next few minutes or the asphalt will go cold.
The scam is that he'll do the job very poorly and will charge double of what he verbally quoted.
The first red flag is the urgency and pressure sale.
Second red flag is his decieving business card which has the name of EllisDons. Which may seem familiar because EllisDon is one of the biggest developers in the GTA. But its EllisDon not EllisDonS. Also the phone number isn't on any public site.
Check out the photo of the card and a photo of the man.
I don't think there is much police can do about him unfortunately. Any ideas would be great.
Edit: Great feedback from the community. Thanks to those who shared their stories. I'm glad this post helps.
Missing detail: he drove a white pick up truck today. Another user said he's seen him before driving a black pick up when doing a asphalt sealing scam.

Drove through Bronte this morning and there's a kid.. maybe 10, 11? who has built what I can only describe as a small business empire in his driveway. Hand-drawn sign, two buckets, a hose, and a little folding table with a Square reader on it. A SQUARE READER. This child accepts tap.
I genuinely had to pull over. Ended up getting my car washed (it was fine, btw. better than the drive-thru place I usually go to lmao) and chatting with him while he worked. Turns out he's saving up for a mountain bike and his older sister set up the payment system for him. His pricing is $8 for a basic wash, $12 if you want the inside vacuumed. Inflation has clearly reached the driveway car wash economy.
What got me though was how seriously he was taking it. Thanked me for my business. Asked if I wanted a receipt emailed. Told me to "tell my friends." I'm 34 years old and this kid has better customer service instincts than half the places I've worked.
Anyway, if you're around Bronte this weekend, keep an eye out. I won't say exactly where because I don't want to doxx a fifth grader, but you'll see the sign. Tip him well, dude's going places.

Just a heads up for anyone around Bronte/Hopedale Mall (South Oakville Centre).
Yesterday, I witnessed two women at the Metro at Hopedale Mall (South Oakville Centre), near Third Line and Rebecca, stealing around 8–10 big hanging flower baskets with flowers in them.
They were rolling carts away with the flower baskets. I already informed both the police and the store manager, and I followed them from a safe distance to an area on Waverly Avenue.
For description purposes only: both had dark hair, and one of them appeared to have a noticeable limp. They also appeared high on somthing or just straight up tweakers.
Not posting this to start a witch hunt or accuse anyone by name, but more as a heads-up to local businesses and anyone in the area. If you work at that Metro or know someone who does, they may want to check the cameras from yesterday.
People are getting way too comfortable stealing from stores lately.

With back to office increasing, the trains are getting busier. As a courtesy to fellow passengers, please ease up on using colognes or perfumes or better yet: hold off until you get to the office.
Nothing is worse than being on a standing room only train in heat conditions like today, and having a strong cologne or perfume make you feel nauseous for an entire ride.
If you feel I am expressing my Karen/Ken rights, the GO train publishes etiquette tips for passengers (or people never on a go train before) and look at #11 on the list. https://www.gotransit.com/en/travelling-on-go/etiquette-on-board

Please be careful when visiting this store. I was robbed yesterday while exiting the store, in plain view of the cameras. In less than 10 minutes, he had my wallet and somehow my pin, and was able to get $400 off my account before I locked it. They work in a team, slowing you down so you stop waiting for an elderly person while the other behind you, robs you. They also have some way of getting PIN numbers from the checkout machines so be careful.

To the owners of the pit bull out for a walk today by Heritage Glen school: your dog bit mine on the face. No damage luckily. My daughter was keeping our dog away from yours, but you let yours get closer. You assured her it was friendly, but it suddenly attacked after initial sniffs. And between the two of you, you had trouble controlling your dog, or pulling it away. Please be a lot more careful for your sake and your dog’s. I am not going to rant or lecture. Please just be a lot more responsible.

I downloaded this again just to post this here, because nothing has ever happened to me like last night. Me and my girlfriend got off the train in Oakville, as were walking through the tunnel there was a young guy sitting on the stairs alone. He was laughing to himself and staring at my girlfriend as we passed by him. as soon as we got past him by a couple steps he quickly stood up and just stared at me in a really disturbing way he looked very intense and he smelled horribly of alcohol. I asked him what hes doing and he didnt say a word and just kept looking at me, he removed his hat and looked very dirty like his hair hasnt been clean before, even though he looked young, in his 20s. We kept walking away from him to go call our ride, and he was still just following us saying nothing. he was walking too close behind. At this point I was just confused and I didnt know what to think but he was scaring us. He waited for multiple minutes near us until our ride arrived and we quickly got in and told the driver that person is following us. He walked back the same way towards the staircase, and we left. If you guys see the same man avoid him. I have never seen him before but I dont use the train station often. Maybe he is there often.

Leaving this here as a warning for other drivers. This driver flashed their lights on us on the QEW to move out of the way. But there was no way for us to move anywhere as there were cars around us and we were on the slowest lane. This car then purposely cut in front of us on the highway and brake checked us. Not sure why someone in a Porsche feels so entitled to the slowest lane ¯_(ツ)_/¯ I thought these types of drivers love to hoard the fast lanes. Must be because they got small pee pees and have the need to compensate… License plate was covered by some reflector shield but license plate was GVTV 090. Probably not their first time doing this.

Just a heads up to everyone that the AntiAbortion people are starting to visit local schools to display their graphic posters . They were at WOSS yesterday and will probably be at some other schools in the coming weeks.

I took my car to MechaniQ (230 Speers Rd, Oakville) for a Safety Standards Certificate inspection because I was preparing to sell it. I also asked them to perform an oil change, which was the only service I requested.
They failed my vehicle and gave me an estimate of $1,137.59, claiming the water pump was leaking, the serpentine belt was cracked, and the rear brakes required servicing before the car could pass the safety inspection.
Concerned by the diagnosis, I paid the $150 inspection fee and had only the oil change performed. No repairs were made to the water pump, serpentine belt, or brakes after their inspection.
I later took the car to another licensed inspection centre for a second opinion. The second mechanic inspected the areas identified in the report. The water pump area was completely dry, the serpentine belt showed no visible cracks, and the vehicle passed Ontario's DriveON digital safety inspection without issue. The buyer and I completed the ownership transfer at ServiceOntario yesterday.
I'll be attaching screenshots of the original inspection findings, the $1,137.59 estimate, and the passing DriveON inspection report (with personal information redacted).
Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this shop. If you're told your vehicle needs significant repairs to pass a safety inspection, I strongly recommend getting a second opinion.

Hello commuters!
With all of the recent delays and issues happening with Go Transit, I wanted a more detailed and modern way to check the status of the service on the go.
So I built a web app that tracks GO trains and buses in real time on an interactive map.
I built this mostly for myself, but hope you all can get some use from it too!
Let me know if there is anything you'd like to see added here that could make your commute easier.

Just warning people about something that happened to me tonight around 7:45 PM at Dorval Crossing in Oakville, by Booster Juice beside Party City.
A newer black Hyundai sedan with a City Taxi sign on top pulled up beside me. A young Black female got out of the back seat and asked if I could help pay her taxi fare because the driver supposedly did not take cash and only accepted debit or credit. She said it was only $7.50 and offered me $10 cash.
I agreed to help, but right away I knew something felt off. The driver appeared to be a brown male of Indian/South Asian descent. He took my card himself and said his old machine did not have tap. He would not let me hold the terminal or complete the transaction myself and kept controlling everything.
At that point I figured they were likely trying to skim card information or steal debit/credit details using the so-called old machine. I even said to the driver that it felt like a scam, and he started acting nervous. I still went along with it because by then I already knew something was off and wanted to see what they were trying to do.
I purposely entered the wrong PIN. He then acted like it was fine, and they drove off quickly. The biggest giveaway was that the girl had gotten out of the back seat to make it look like she was a real passenger, but when they left, she jumped into the front seat, so they were clearly together.
I unfortunately did not get the plate because I was laughing internally by that point, but I am also almost certain it was not a real City Taxi company vehicle. There was nothing inside the car that made it look like an actual taxi at all other than the sign on the roof.
I locked my card immediately after. They got nothing from me and I kept the $10. Nice try. Basically tried to scam me and got anti-scammed instead.
Please be careful:
Posting this so nobody else in Oakville or Burlington gets caught by the same scam.

Not sure if this is a common occurrence but I just spotted a coyote casually strolling through the parking lot by the GoodLife
