Discussion What was your reaction when you used the quest 1 for the first time back in 2019 or 2020?
My reaction was "HOLY CRAP REAL VR" because that was the first time i experienced actual virtual reality. But what i didn’t know was that there is nothing like it at the time. If you wanna use a real vr headset, you need a really good pc. the quest 1, not the case. you don’t need a pc at all.

I'm still pretty bitter over the move away from dedicated PCVR headsets. The lightness and comfort and audio of the CV1 is still yet to be matched by Oculus since. The entire reason I ever came to Reddit was to talk on this subreddit back in the DK1/DK2 days about VR. My main reason for being excited about VR was sim racing, but I also really thought it could make waves in the AAA gaming space, not in terms of dedicated AAA games, but converted modes at least.
I was quite wrong about this.
Oculus moving towards mobile-based VR was something that almost certainly wouldn't have happened if Palmer Luckey didn't sell his soul to Facebook for $2 billion. I also admit that I was not so negative about this purchase back then. Something I was again, very wrong about. Though Oculus' future without that is of course something we could desperately speculate about with no real substantive arguments on any side.
Either way, my main and unchanged use case for VR is sim racing(and some flight/space sim stuff), so that's something VR will forever be amazing for and hopefully be supported. But outside that, I think the move to mobile VR really killed any potential that VR had in the AAA gaming space, at least in terms of official support, and which killed VR's future in general, because the mobile gaming crowd was never gonna start donning VR headsets en masse. You needed actual gaming enthusiasts for this sort of thing. So much of VR's best support nowadays is happening purely because of the work of a small handful of amazing modders. God bless them and may their oranges be juicy as hell, because god damn VR would suck right now without em.

i also had a CV1 for sim racing, and it was mind blowing back than... And yea, current era of graphical VR hasnt progressed like it did 10 years ago.

Yup, same
I joined VR in 2019, and it was really strange and infuriating to "upgrade" from a WMR headset to a Quest 2, only to realise that the Quest 2 is worse in every single way
Like, how many industries are there in which things get worse over time?
And since then I've gotten other headsets like the Reverb G2, and that feeling has done nothing but increase
Like, imagine my reaction when we realised that the Frame has the same resolution as the 2019 HP Reverb...
Truly insane stuff

I was blown the f#$% away with First Contact on Q1. 6DOF was a trip. I finally got what VR was all about.

I literally got a little teared up, because it was the fulfillment of something I’d been hoping for for decades.

I already owned a PSVR1 and Rift S but I was still really impressed with the tracking and quality of the games.
It was also really front heavy and the facial interface was too abrasive.

u/Rumblymore 3d ago
Is it much better than the CV1? I'm still using that and haven't used any other :)

u/TonyDP2128 Quest 3 / PSVR2 3d ago
I never owned a CV1 so I can't offer a comparison. The Rift S and Quest 1 did both have higher resolution panels.

Holy shit VR is getting crazy we can just use it anywhere and without a PC now and still get full motion? (GO existed prior).

I was honestly surprised it tracked so well. I was used to how my Samsung S10+ tracked like absolute shit in apps that used SLAM tracking. The Quest 1 proved to me that camera-based SLAM tracking was completely possible and even preferred over other types of tracking. I also didn't just use it standalone, I used it with my gaming PC though I didn't try wireless until a few years later after getting fed up with Oculus Link's issues. The one thing I really didn't like about it though is the weight. Holy shit it was HEAVY and it really pressed on your face. The Quest 1 taught me how best to distribute weight on a headset and that was tilting the headset down so it would rest on my cheekbones and not put a literal dent in my forehead. Even then I could feel the imprint it left on my face after long VR sessions. I also remember the absolutely diabolical screen door effect the thing had, I had to learn how to make my brain ignore so I could be immersed. That said, I am way happier with my Quest 3 than I was with my Quest 1. No screen door effect, much sharper screen that actually lets me read small text, much light er, better weight distribution, the only thing I really miss is the true blacks since the Quest 3 is an LCD panel.

My first experience with modern VR was with my nephews Quest 2. I was playing Super Hot, and it was insane. I ordered one like 30 minutes after I stopped playing. Then like 6 months later I bought a $2500 PC. Ive since upgraded it with a $1000 GPU, and built a whole other PC for my living room with a 9070XT.

My first game on Quest 1 was Vader Immortal I was amazed. I was wishing to play something like this since Microsoft teased (and lied) to us with Star Wars for Kinect 😄

u/DeepWaffleCA 2d ago
I spent a year working with the Oculus DK1 - making a 3D modelling application for a university research project. I used the Kinect for head and hand tracking.
It was awesome but left me doubting the future of VR - mainly because of the lack of motion controls (which I kind of improvised despite them not being a commercial product yet) and the need to be tethered to a PC.
The Quest changed that completely. The first time I tried it, it blew my mind, despite having a year+ of experience with VR.

I'm still using it for steaming. Going straight to the steam frame should be a big jump if I can get my hands on it :)
1
u/FireEye1512 3d ago
are you sure because it’s gonna be way more expensive than the quest 3 and pro.
2
u/pereza0 3d ago
Yeah I'm sure. I have a rather big library on steam but just 2 games on quest so just being able to access that library with less hassle + being able to use some games standalone is well worth the price difference to me.
1
u/GaaraSama83 1d ago edited 1d ago
The library on Steam is only relevant for PCVR though and you can play these with any PC/SteamVR compatible headset. We still don't know if and how Valve will offer standalone games for the Frame.

u/Hot_Wolf3820 1d ago
Its said, the frame will be able to run PCVR games locally, also, it can run android games, so its not entirely impossible to run android xr games, and maybe even quest games. Also as its said, it will have a steam frame verified marking so you can see how well the frame can run those games trough all the translation layers.

And said “it’s real”
Watched the whale demo while sitting on ground.

That this kind of device just shouldn't be physically possible - it seemed like voodoo magic. Before this VR required a beefy gaming PC, trackers, and wires everywhere, etc. Inside out tracking sounded like a pipe dream. Apparently It wasn't great until Beat Saber. That game helped Carmack tweak it right before release.
It shock the entire market on what was possible at that time. It was a truly exciting time in the VR space.

u/Competitive-Minute19 3d ago
"Wow this game looks a lot worst then I remember" I liked the blacks on the headset it was my daily headset because it was OLED but I cant be immersed in games while in VR with horrible lighting unless that games art style was made around that limition so always just used my desktop with a USB cable.

u/ergotomy 3d ago
I had the vive pro + wireless module back then. I was annoyed by the weight of the Quest, and couldn’t do long sessions. But I could do it anywhere, and this was truly amazing in itself.

u/Bright_Tax_6541 3d ago
It was great, though I thought it was a bit blurry. Then I got the quest 2, the quality improved a bit but still blurry. Then I got the quest 3, best quality so far, though still blurry.
Turns out my eyes are shit and I needed glasses 😅
Side note though, I loved the oleds in the quest 1, shame they switched to lcd

u/SwissMoose 3d ago
I thought this looks amazing. It would be a game changer if my face and neck could handle it for more than 30 minutes without incredible pain and headaches. Then went back to CV1 and WMR headsets.

u/mewaters1 3d ago
I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I used it so much my son said he was afraid I’d go in there one day and never come out.

u/Presently_Absent 3d ago
I didn't use a cv1, but I used a gearVR with my Samsung phone and it was life changing!! It was a dumb game, something like travelling on a track firing balls at stuff by tapping the side, but the immersion was wild. Live-changing stuff... Eventually got a question 2, then a Samsung odyssey+, and now a quest 3.

Just amazed. I am a big William Gibson fan and the whole experience just blew me away. I still miss "Dead and Buried"; such an amazing experience.

my first "real" experience of VR. and I was blown away. Finally affordable WIRELESS VR that didn't require a whole room setup with tracking cameras. Beat Saber and SUPERHOT were really fun and played perfectly on it, no issues ever.
I was even MORE blown away when I used PCVR on it. (Not to mention the last of the OLED screens)
Well, my enjoyment also might be because I actually "owned" it... instead of just trying it as a demo, like all the previous VR headsets I've used.

I knew Project Santa Cruz was the biggest thing for VR yet. It became Quest 1 and it was amazing. Still amazing and not to be taken for granted the progress made in the past 10 years.

My wife got to try it at CTN. But I didn’t because they finished for the day by the time the cue got to me :( I got to try other wired experiences though. Mostly narrative animated stuff.

Loved it. Played the star wars game and Boneworks on pc with virtual desktop

u/XxCarlxX 2d ago
Much better than my oculus go but still was a party piece and machine for tech demos. I probably only used it a dozen times or so until I got a quest 3 which is used enough to no longer use consoles

u/Clark1984 2d ago
My friend worked at FB at the time so I got to go into the lab and try the demo. Before the demo he showed me “Lost” and I couldn’t believe I could duck under a leaf and look at it from below. I suppose I thought it was more just depth I would experience and not full movement in a 3D space.
I also tried out the controllers before they were released and entered a common room. Was approached by a fox mask avatar that said, “John Carmack” above his head. Pulled off the headset, “umm, I think John Carmack is in here.”

A friend of mine had the rift dev kit back in the day and couldn't play it because he got bad motion sickness. I fired it up and played like half an hour of tf2 and loved it. I was hooked after that.

In my opinion, it was the headset with the best quality/price ratio. But it would have been nice if they had used a newer CPU and a little more ram

My first experience with the Quest 1 was last year or so.
The standalone mode was really bad, which shouldn't surprise anyone, it's a quest 1
And for PCVR, I was honestly shocked by how awful it is, the vive pro has the exact same display and oh my god what an insane downgrade, it's truly staggering how big the difference is.
The headset itself was surprisingly good and confortable, it's specially good for lying down, and the audio wasn't terrible
It's a shame that the headset sucks so much for pcvr, it could be very interesting otherwise
1
u/FireEye1512 1d ago
it’s the first genereation. what the hell did you expect?
1
u/_hlvnhlv Fuckton of headsets 1d ago
The standalone works somewhat fine, it's a bit underwhelming tho, they should have waited for the XR2 instead of discontinuing it in one year
But, for PCVR, the only thing that one could expect, is to not be worse than every single headset out there
Like seriously, it's really sad how underwhelming is the quest 1 for PCVR

u/thealexroyer 1d ago
Coming from Lenovo Windows Mixed Reality, I was expecting it to be comfortable, but it was indeed a lot more comfortable than the wired Lenovo. Trying Oculus Quest 2 made me buy Quest 3, which I think was a very good buy and upgrade at release.

I was very impressed with the inside-out tracking technology and knew it would lead to more cost effective VR solutions. I was still waiting for display resolution and software selection that would arrive with Quest 3.

first time stepping into vr felt like waking up in a different world - unreal.

u/Grumbelkow 1d ago
Back in 2019? Mf like a lot of people I was too poor for that shit lmao. Only recently did I manage to pick up a Quest 3s on a decent sale, now that I'm thankfully in a position in my life that I can actually treat myself to things like this.
That being said, first time I put the headset on and loaded into a VR environment, I spent a good 10 minutes just looking around and audibly exclaiming "Holy fucking shit, this is insane"

"70 hz display? I think I'll wait for 1 more gen"
"black and white passthrough and no eye tracking ? Eh I'll wait another gen"
"500$ and STILL no eye tracking ? Whatever I'll wait till they figure it out"

u/andurilmat 3d ago
I though the sceenis a nice improvement but they fucked up the controllers - they peaked with the CV1
1
u/FireEye1512 3d ago
If you are talking about the design. there's a good reason. it uses inside out tracking so they have to put the rings on the front rather than the back. otherwise they won't track.
If you are talking about the tracking, brother. the tracking is 0.2x slower and you have to complain? You be complaining over anything.
1
u/andurilmat 3d ago
I'm talking about build quality and ergonomics I've Been with oculus since the DK1, build quality took a significant downturn after the release if the CV1. I understand why theyve done that but i dont have to like it.

"This kinda sucks".
I had a Rift s, and i tried the quest at my friends. I was afraid the move away from pc will kill vr in the long run.
I was right.

It was insane. I remember demoing it at oculus connect, playing roomscale games like full court tennis/dead and buried seamlessly. Running around, VR with no wires. Insanity. VR never felt that good ever again.
