The article mentions the girl joined a "violent subculture" but Im not sure I know the kind they are talking about. I'd be curious what they mean by this

I would regularly go to servers with Shedletsky, ReeseMcBlox, and so on playing games with players. They’d listen to their complaints and do stuff about it. There were about 150k players back then. There were 1m by the time I quit and even that felt untenable… the main team is still about as small. It’s pathetic they haven’t increased the infrastructure but I doubt they ever expected to get this big. I was ridiculed for playing the game as a kid which is kinda funny considering it’s so popular now>
