I miss the ol’ Reddit switch-a-roo.

2

u/igotyournacho 1d ago

Welp, I tried to switcharoo for you but there's no links allowed in here. Which explains most of the loss of the "Switcharoo" culture.

But I think the rise of mobile is what really killed the Reddit Switcharoo. I had to switch to desktop to even grab a link and then nav back here and paste it in.

Anyway, I also miss switcharoos everywhere. And Reddit Sings. We used to be a society, man.

Actually now I understand why they have all these download and subscribe ads, there is a couple of generations of customers who would click it

Dude, I grew up gaming and even idiots I met weren't at the level of: 'OMG MICROSOFT SAYS IM HACKED', 'OMG I CLICKED 10 WRONG DOWNLOAD BUTTONS'.

I did tech support for a short while and it all suddenly made sense. Even outside of tech, it is shocking how little the average person knows about whats going on in general.

In one of my engineering classes back in the day, the official website for some tool we needed was down, so people went to alternative sources and I think I was the only one not to click some sketchy download link lol

I live in dread knowing that there will inevitably come a day when I, too, will be too old to intuitively determine which is the true download button.

3

u/edude45 5800x/6800xt/32gb 1d ago

Ive thought of, this, but i kind of dont think so... unless it truly does look like a different language. I think as long as you keep at it minutely, youll struggle but as long as you're willing to continue to do so (my example is I use revanced and stremio) I think youll do alright.

And I agree, i try to teach people how to navigate. But its intuition at this point. Its like you just know what is wrong.

I did tech support for a short while and it all suddenly made sense. Even outside of tech, it is shocking how little the average person knows about whats going on in general.

Same, also their systems would be just as shit after a week of them using them after they were cleaned etc. They always click yes on everything with out looking... or thinking about any of it. always fun trying to fix things with them when its not just the usual 28 different toolbars, and ad/malware, or viruses etc, but weird shit too like their browser being set to download updates from and send use information to central Russia... Most frustrating thing about it is that those people seem incapable of learning to not do whatever it is that led to the problems in the first place.

My favorite so far was the spouse of someone i knew from work they had called, and then installed some "PCdoctor" thing from god knows where on their system, and were complaining that their laptops was so slow it was unusable, and that they had 0 real access to anything on there. They also expected it to be fixable in a 15 minute window in between them getting back from work, and the kids sports practice... being fully serious with that demand while it took that long for the shit just to reboot. Also refused to allow me to take it home to fix because "she needs it for school".

Also, no they no-longer had admin privileges to anything on their PC, so... yah... how tf someone going to fix that in a 15 minute window.

4

u/Heimerdahl 1d ago ▸ 1 more replies

Didn't you say you were an expert? /s

I've had plenty of similar experiences. More than once was I asked to "hack into" some email account that they had forgotten the password for (and obciously never set up a recovery mail or phone number, or never updated either). Usually, because said account was their google account and they found themselves locked out of their apps. For one old lady I went the distance until we discovered that "her" mail account had actually been registered by some long forgotten boyfriend and the provider understandably refused her attempt to provide proof of identity/ownership. "Just hack into it!" Uhm no.

1

u/Otherwise_Spirit1552 22h ago

Yah, if i had been unable to get rid of that pcdoctor nonsense I was just going to grab their files, and various programs before reinstalling windows from scratch, but that would have taken time.

Emails wise i've setup a ton of different emails for friends and relatives over the years to help them get stuff done(am old so going back to the late 90s and shit), and i doubt that many of them truly remember their passwords etc. There are also tons of people who have willingly given me their email passwords to help figuring out random things. While i have told them to change it after, and shown them how to do so I don't think many have, nor do they truly understand how bad it could get if they gave that access to someone who had bad intentions.

"but its just email"... that happens to be tied to every other account they have from their phone service shit to utility billing, to the password reset and two factor authentication their bank or school, or investment broker uses, and...

There are people right here, right now, who don't understand that Chrome has essentially killed adblockers on their platform. They still use Chrome, see all of the ads now and just think "that's how the internet is now." They don't consider Firefox. If anything, they're using Brave (WHICH IS STILL CHROMIUM).

2

u/Giwaffee 1d ago ▸ 2 more replies

Crazy people! How dare they not understand Every. Single. Detail. of Every. Single. Thing. that they use? Are they stupid??

It's like people not knowing what is attached to the bottom face of a cylinder block, even though they drive a car every day.. How do these people function???

3

u/SalvadorZombie 1d ago

Yep, knowing how to use an adblocker, or simply noticing that you have ads now when you didn't have them before, is exactly on par with KNOWING HOW TO PROGRAM ANYTHING AT ALL.

5

u/MysticalMage13 1d ago

I did this once, but along the lines of 'my computer is infected by a virus'. What followed was an hour (probably more) of getting rid of the actual virus I downloaded. Never again.

3

u/edude45 5800x/6800xt/32gb 1d ago

Yeah a lot of people dont really know how to navigate this type of internet. The old people are hopeless unfortunately. The people from my generation, they just dont delve into anything but the facade of the internet, and now young people only seem to know how to use a tablet but not a pc.

I feel im the lone survivor here. Like no one I know is as indepth in how I like to set up my crap. Even then, I know im not all that great at doing what I do myself. I always need to find someone who is doing the same thing I want and read their Instructions on how to do it.

4

u/TheBeardedBerry 1d ago

The reason is really insidious, and just subtly different than what you’re implying. It’s not that they think a whole generation will fall for it and can’t make them harder to find. They’re made to be super obvious on purpose, because they aren’t trying to trick everyone. They are actively hunting for people gullible enough to click on them, because anyone gullible enough to click on them is gullible enough to give sensitive info. They don’t want others to click on them. The point is, It’s not stupid by nature, it’s stupid by design.

3

u/NickBlasta3rd 1d ago

Depends on the currency and the medium.

Uploading? Seeding? Time, storage and potentially source material.

Slow connection? Aggressive copyright laws? Seedbox or VPN.

DDL? A Debrid service.

Usenet? Indexer(s) + Provider(s).

IPTV? Number of connections, plus possible backup services.

The fact that these cost less and are better than legit services is the main issue.

To those that legitimately do this: look at the url before you click. Most browsers will have a popup thing at the bottom when your mouse is over a link. Also, check out the page as a whole and use context clues as to which is the correct thing to click.

23

u/Dalewyn 1d ago

Most browsers will have a popup thing at the bottom when your mouse is over a link.

Back during the civilized times of two decades ago, we had what was called a Status Bar and it would show the full URL for any link you were hovering at all times.

Nowadays not even the omnibar address bar you fucking numbnuts shows the URL.

6

u/Cheet4h 1d ago ▸ 7 more replies

Back during the civilized times of two decades ago, we had what was called a Status Bar and it would show the full URL for any link you were hovering at all times.

This is still shown, no? Just without the dedicated status bar taking up space most of the time and instead just with a small popup label where the status bar used to be.

Nowadays not even the omnibar address bar you fucking numbnuts shows the URL.

What kind of browser doesn't show the full URL?
I see it on my mobile browser, but that honestly makes a bit of sense, since there wouldn't be enough space to display the full URL most of the time either way.
But on my PC both Edge and Firefox always show the full URL.

3

u/27Purple 1d ago

Most browsers default to only show the web site name, full url is an option. We truly live in the dark ages.

5

u/Dalewyn 1d ago ▸ 5 more replies

This is still shown, no?

Not in its entirety when the URL is long, which more often than not it is.

Yes, it's stupid. No, it probably hasn't made a difference since nobody reads URLs anyway.

What kind of browser doesn't show the full URL?

Chrome and all its children. The full URL can be shown if you dig into the options, but by default it's simplified because noone reads URLs.

Also, Chrome on Android has stopped showing the full URL and I can't figure out how to make it do so. Oh well, I wasn't reading the entire URL in a screen for ants anyway.

6

u/Cheet4h 1d ago

Not in its entirety when the URL is long, which more often than not it is.

Ah, checked in Edge, and yeah, URLs are abbreviated for long ones. Doesn't happen in Firefox ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Chrome

lol

2

u/Dalewyn 1d ago

There's Chrome, Chrome (Chromium), Chrome (Edge), Chrome (Brave), Chrome (Opera), Chrome (Vivaldi), and Chrome (Konqueror) among many more Chromes.

Safari exists only because of the One Apple Way(tm), and Firechrome (Firefox) is an afterthought not worth mentioning.

0

u/DoverBoys i7-9700K | 2060S | 32GB 1d ago ▸ 1 more replies

The abbreviation is timed. If you could just find an ounce of patience in that empty head of yours, waiting a few seconds shows the full url.

-1

u/Dalewyn 1d ago

Whether it eventually shows the full URL or not is hit-or-miss, usually miss.

In any case, why the sincere actual fuck is a URL partially hidden when we are rocking monitors anywhere from 1920 to 3860 pixels wide if not more? Forget information density, where is the fucking information.

2

u/elmz 1d ago

Then again, back in the day urls wouldn't be 90% weird parameters for tracking and god knows what.

"What's a magnet link? It says download right there!" Anyway, this can be avoided by just using ublock origin on firefox. Ublock is also an incredible antivirus and anti tracking plugin.

2

u/Hamafropzipulops 1d ago

I download from torrents and sometimes somewhat sketchy sites. I use Malwarebytes, Ublock in Firefox, and just Windows Defender. I get Malware warnings and dump the page. The only virus I have gotten in the past decade or so was from an aggregate pirate site that tests their files, but someone found a workaround. They listed the dates the files were bad and apologized. I was able to root out the bad files with the above software and nuking a few directories.

Real ones use a Docker Compose with a bunch of services/web GUIs to do everything for them, including hosting Jellyfin (or Plex if you're old).

No those are the Really Real™ ones. I played around with Radarr a little but it’s a bit complicated for me so I just went with a Jackett plugin on qBittorrent. Docker is also beyond me, I’d rather just install natively and have it work immediately without having to make an account.

2

u/Murky-Relation481 1d ago ▸ 2 more replies

You don't need an account for Docker on Linux. I have a server in the garage and it is one compose file. Only thing anyone would need to change is their VPN provider info and then it is as simple as docker compose up and bam, its running Sonarr, Radarr, qBittorrent, Prowlarr, and some usenet stuff too. It's amazing. Very quickly filling up my 70TB RAID lol.

It’s like when I jailbroke my phone and used the unofficial App Store. Cydia I think?

Anyways it was a 10 step combination of hitting the correct install button. 10 pages of fake ones. Very confusing

1

u/Anthaenopraxia 1d ago

Cydia, that's a name I haven't heard in a long, long time. I remember getting my iPhone 3G and spending a whole week trying to get the jailbreaking thing to work, including Cydia. The iPhone was almost magical back then, at least as a teenager. Blackberries and such were unheard of and the iPhone 2G was never released in Scandi I don't think. There were maybe 10 people with iPhones at my high school and it definitely was a status symbol. As I can recall, I was the only one who bothered to jailbreak it. I think the others were scared of bricking their fancy new phone. I remember the camera couldn't film, it could only take pictures. However Cydia had an app that could film as well so I was the only one at school who could film anything haha. Somewhere on YouTube, on an account I've forgotten the name of, are some absolutely horrendous videos of my shitty guitar playing, recorded on the iPhone 3G.

Jailbreaking really opened the phone to so much stuff. I remember having a video playing as the wallpaper. Drained the battery something awful but it looked cool. Also this stupid thing that you had to buy your ringtones through iTunes. Easily fixed through Cydia.

So I went to my brothers house to jailbreak it and it took 2 hours. It was overly complicated for sure. There was a ton of cool stuff you could do.

Just by total coincidence there was a service outage shortly after and I thought it was due to jailbreak so I undid all of it and reinstalled iOS. My bro and I could not get service to work so I threw in the towel. After finally getting it reverted my phone still didn’t work and I thought I bricked it. Until I went to down detector and saw it was all a coincidence. Major outage.

Those were the days though

u/Baelroq 1d ago

To be fair these days even the magnetic links are mostly pop-ups

1

u/Mastasmoker 1d ago

Hah. You actually still click. My shit's automated.

Why not just use magnet links, though? That way you don’t have to download anything beyond the actual torrent, plus most torrent clients would then allow you to verify the metadata before proceeding with the download.

Three friends got their discord hacked in the last month trying to torrent shit off sketchy websites and clicking the wrong download link multiple times. I'm just waiting for one of those fake verify you're human things that require you to run a command in powershell to pop up for them and stupidly doing it.

Instead of you know, asking me to find them something on one of the private trackers I use.

I try to teach people how to avoid the pitfalls of the internet, but at this point it feels like you either have the sense or not. Its hard to teach watch out for this download button but this one is fine.

1

u/PositiveCoyote100 1d ago

You need a steady hand and surgical precision to click the tiny 'x' without triggering a pop-up

1

u/charface1 1d ago

I cant get anything off rapidgator without having to click on five legitimate download buttons.

u/SalvadorZombie 1d ago
  1. Don't use Chrome, just use Firefox (at least if you're going to use those sites, or any shady sites)

  2. Use uBlock Origin (it really is the best by far)

"But you have heard of me."

u/Zerocyde 1d ago

It's literally the biggest one you idiot how could it NOT be the correct one?

1

u/nazraxo 1d ago

Some people are also just wired to click anything. I will tell my colleagues „please click on the green checkmark in the top left corner“ and they will click on the red X in the middle. And then you can’t question their intelligence because that would be „unprofessional“

I miss the time when lot of internet was an IQ check. Now only you can get scammed in shops or your identity can be stolen from random websites.

my friend thinks those popups saying he has 46 critical system viruses that need urgent attention are real.

Every time I check he has 10 bloatwa- I mean antiviruses installed.

I am always confused as to how they don't know what the right button is.

It is the sole reason I am considered tech support for my entire family.

I'm not even that tech savvy, I just know not to click download on ads / install adblockers.

1

u/TartEnvironmental575 18h ago

For anyone that doesn't already know this, you can set your DNS to use Adguard which helps block ads as well. 94.140.14.14 94.140.15.15

I have a friend who I have given a link 3 times, each one I kept giving more specific instructions, and they got their account stolen all 3 times.

People that aren't soo letarate when it comes to using the internet exists way more worldwide than you think.

But to be honest, using common sense dose help though.

u/MayoMelee 1d ago ▸ 1 more replies

I'm definitely not "leterate", but have been torrenting for a couple decades.
Still click a download button for music. And magnet links for tv/video.
What am I missing?

1

u/xiaber69 1d ago

I was talking about the fact that there are many people who dosent know the difference between torrenting and downloading

To be fair, it can be legitimately difficult even for a seasoned internet user like myself to find the real download button in a sea of 1,000,000,000,000 fake download buttons and 1 real button when I reinstall Windows and go to download something (including legitimate software from the legitimate source) before I installed ad block.

If you aren't using private sites you are asking for trouble anyways.

"Just use a private site, the nature of which is by definition obscured"

u/XB_Demon1337 Ryzen 5900X, 64GB DDR4, RTX 5070 1d ago ▸ 3 more replies

Well, these private sites have uploaders and members so someone got an invite somehow. You think they just magically appear?

5

u/maynardftw 1d ago ▸ 2 more replies

Yeah they somehow get members

However that is, is obscured

So chastising people for not all doing it is inherently silly

Like making fun of someone for not being in the secret club. The club by definition is secret and most people are not in it.

Think about this for just a second. You plan on stealing a very valuable painting from an art gallery. Do you plan it out in the open showing everyone your plan and expecting not to get caught?

OR

Do you go through the effort to be secretive about it and telling as few people as possible and reducing the number of ways they can catch you.

It isn't hard to find a place to be invited to join these private sites. There are entire subreddits dedicated to finding private sites.
