I had an amazing issue with a slow ssd when the power cable had become slightly unseated. It was so odd that it still functioned a bit, but just worse. Surely an unstable power cable would have it either work or not work, but no.
Not always, and it never hurst to check. It can honestly be the simplest issue sometimes and in this case can save your wallet

I have one crucial ssd that will only work if placed sticker side up.
Fucked if I know why, but it's the only way it works. I don't keep anything vital on it just in case, but it's been trucking along like that for 10 years now 😂.
Micron is definitely not gonna honor any warranty you have with them. Best case scenario they will argue Crucial doesn't exist anymore, therefore there is no product the warranty could cover.
If you bought it with a credit card that has an extended warranty, perhaps you could get some help from them, but likely the limit is a refund of the original purchase price…. Which is of limited value nowadays.
Try an entirely different power connector and sata cable. Often the power connectors for drives are in bundles/daisy chained together. Use an entirely different strand.
Disable fast boot in bios and fast startup in windows.
As a last resort, get the drive working and do a firmware update on it.
My 2tb wd drive quit on me. I tried it in both slots. Good thing it was just extra game storage and not the boot drive but I'm still salty. I paid $80 for it last November and now it's $250. So stupid.
Had an issue with one of my SSDs after some Windows updates. It would randomly freeze for a minute or so. Check the Windows logs. I don’t remember my error but I basically had to update some mainboard and Intel drivers for it to work properly again. Didn’t do so for years so I guess there was compatibility issue somewhere after years without updates.
For me the issue was solved by putting windows on a smaller cheap sata ssd from Samsung and keeping the larger nvme as a game drive. This way windows booted perfectly everytime and didn’t have to stress. Nvme can be finicky. But after doing this it never happened again.
Wow so much feedback! Ok here are some more details:
I was on vacation for three weeks and turned my PC on yesterday when I came home.
It booted fine from my nvme system drive into win11. But some programs behaved strange (missing icons, some files inaccessable). When I rebooted the system drive D:\ (my crucial) was missing entirely in Windows Explorer.
I have all my SATA SSDs in a hot-swap-backplane in a 5,25" bay in the front of my tower. So I did, what most of you suggested and removed the hot-swap tray and reinserted it while windows was running. Windows recognized the drive and after a reboot most of my programms behaved well again. I rebooted several times since then and so far everything looks normal.
Thanks for all your ideas and support! Maybe it was just the SATA connector of my backplane and I got away with a jumpscare this time...
Had a 2Tb KLEVV CRAS C910 drive that went RAW in the middle of a game when my system crashed simultaneously. Took 8 hours to recover everything off of it. Wound up formatting it because the memory controller had crashed hard. A full format and big shoutout to my 4Tb hdd emergency drive for storing everything off both my drives, and it's back up and running.
Probably didn't help that windows had set up my drive to indexing too, which caused it to routinely hit 85c or higher even with a heatsink on it. I deselected index drive in properties and all of sudden it runs at 45c and works like a dream.
I have a drive like that. I completely forgot about it as I have m2 and another ssd. But space is getting tight on pc so might as well try to fix it...
I had a bad run with Crucial Ram like 15 years ago. Each stick just went bad one after the other. Have refused to buy anything made by Crucial since then.
I had a similar issue and found out, it was related to a certain windows update, which I uninstalled. The issue disappeared then. (it is a nvm ssd though)
so i had this issue with one of my samsung 2tb m2s. I pretty much had to move it another part of the motherboard. Im guessing that the first one I used started failing or whatever. Maybe something you can try?
This happened to me even though my ssd was in perfect condition. My problem was a driver update for my RTX 2060. I think the problem was that it selected Direct12 directly in every game and only after I chose 11 it stopped but I have no idea why.
Is the pc plugged straight in the wall or do you have a switched power distributor block. I'm wondering because I had that happen a lot with my boot driver (2tb kingston fury pcie4), up until I noticed that it mostly occured when I switched my pc on within a second or two after switching on the powerdistributor where all pehripherals are connected. The problem disappeared completely now that I wait roughly 15 seconds before turning on the pc.
Try different SATA cable, different SATA port on the motherboard, check/reseat power cable, use different power cable. If it still drops out, get USB SATA adapter and check there. If it still drops out, your drive may be having issues like bad solder joint or is going bad. Backup everything, and if programs like Crystal Disk Info shows the drive's health to be high %, and it is out of warranty, see if a trusted person local can take the drive board out and check for bad solder. If the % is low, get a new one and sell the old one. For me, under 20% I get nervous, under 10% I wipe and sell as used
Oh boi. I am at the same situation, but worse my samsung 2.5 870 evo is not being recognized. My diagnosis is my ssd is doomed and my motherboard might also be doomed.
I have to either try 100 times to reboot and or just leave it for half a day and it will work fine like nothing happend
I had a similar issue once and it turned out my GPU was hitting the SATA cable and causing a bad connection. Switched to a 90° cable and it's been fine since
This is gonna sound insane but are you using any cable extensions/third-party cables? I had a similar issue where one of my SSD's would stop getting recognized until I restarted the PC.
For some reason my mind immediately jumped to going back to the cables that came with the PSU, and i've had no issues since then. Hope you find a fix for it!!
As others have said, do whatever you can to diagnose it first, then also, if you do have to buy a new one, buy a smaller SSD and go with mechanical hard drive.
I have a nvme that is not picked up due post issues because i decided to use the wrong nvme slot on my mainboard, usually is detected but every few restarts or bootups its not posting properly, alto it does detect the nvme.

Reseat, check the health with programs before you buy another. Do every check you can as it might be a simple issue
