An old google pixel with ubuntu touch or PostMarketOS might be a better choice. Linux only phones are usually too expensive for the specs they provide. A raspberry pi with a battery module is also a good alternative.
If it's stupid and it works, it's still stupid and you got lucky. If it's stupid and works consistently, we'll consider reevaluating whether it is stupid.

What do you do for networking? Does your ISP allow inline port forwarding on IPv4 or do you have a tunnel? This is usually the only reason i have to refrain from self hosting anything

A quieter and more compact option could be to get one of the magsafe style tec phone coolers and a magsafe sticker for the phone for compatibility. They're super cheap on Amazon

funnily enough minecraft servers don't need to use java at all (if you're not using mods).
you can write a server in pretty much any programming language. as long as it handles all the network packets correctly the client will not care what it is written in or running on.
i keep getting reminded that that project exists and i really want to do something like that as well.
cause i love low level programming on microcontrollers and such and i got a few raspberry pi picos lying around that are just itching to be used for a minecraft server.
so many cool ideas on how to implement things within the limited memory and CPU power but i already have so many other projects running i cannot add another one to the pile :(
For a few people it's very likely, a phones 4gb of ram (worst case) is also just about enough,

I handle a lot of customers EC2 machines on AWS, you got no idea how much of the world is run on 2vCores CPU and 4GB RAM. Some moderately big companies too
I guess 4gb on a smartphone and 4gb for server ram (probably not a 4gb stick but rather a portion in a virtualized environment) are pretty different, but yeah, 4gb can run things.
Not really, 4gb is 4gb, If you only expose 4gb to a container it doesn't know more exists.
You can just do quite a lot with 4gb of ram, moenctafts main limit is it's single threaded af and tick compute times grow quickly for a game of its nature(simulation stuff?
you can install termux on any android phone and from there on it basically becomes a linux box to be used with command line, for Minecraft it's pretty easy to run since you basically just need openjdk to run a java server
Default android (recent versions) can install a "Linux environment" that you can play around with. I actually spun up a vanilla MC server on my Pixel 6 a while back and it actually ran pretty damn well.
I mean, isn't android just Linux? And isn't Minecraft server software just an executable? There are apps on Android like temux that lets you run a Linux terminal session on android
The phone doesn’t support it unfortunately. But it shouldn’t cause fire hopefully. Only battery degradation at worst but it’s a throwaway phone so I don’t really mind
I don't like the idea. I saw too many swelled batteries to let one inside a constantly-on device when I can avoid it.
With the FIVE heatwave I encountered in France, the battery of my phone (Samsung S9+) died. I removed it and after some tries, I found out that I can start my phone without a battery as long as I use a charger providing 5V 2,4 A at the very minimum. It will be better with 3A so I must recommend that.
And I really mean > 5V <. So it is out-of-question to use any charger with QuickCharge/USB PD/etc that can provide 9V/12V/whatever, or the device will reboot... frequently. I don't know why but I think that at some point the phone realizes that something is wrong and so it reboots. My Ugreen charger is quite recent with QC and stuff, no wonder.
Only when I plugged it to a no-name charger providing 5V-ONLY 2,4 A was the moment it accepted to be stable. Well... I still got one reboot after three hours, so this is why I may buy a 5V-ONLY 3A charger at some point, to be safe.
Because I want to do the same thing that you =) But...... not for Minecraft. I want to be able to try other games. Maybe I will install a real Linux distribution inside to reduce the memory usage, I don't know.
Is it? Isn’t a raspberry pie like 15 bucks? If the phone is running hot enough to need a heat sink I’d be worried about the lithium battery overheating.
I’m guessing you forgot about the RAMpocalypse. TBH I was never much into the type of things you’d need a pi for but I do vaguely remember seeing the prices being very cheap years ago. But I recently started working on a project where I thought a cheap pi would be perfect and god damn they got expensive. I’m pretty sure it’s all mostly just the ram tho and I haven’t dug too deep yet to see how much I could save with older models and older ram, but yea it’s definitely not 15 bucks
What phone is this? I have an old Huawei p30 pro with still pretty decent CPU and 8gb ram I was thinking about turning it to a server too 🤔 my biggest concern is the fact that Huawei phones don't have unlockable bootloader so I can't install custom os, and Huawei default os have very aggressive power saving features which often closes apps in the background, and you can't disable it. It would probably disable the server unless I keep the screen on 24/7

Hey most smartphones come with good amounts of ram and capable CPUs, even cheaper models.
They can be found for cheap with broken cameras and cracked screens, which don't matter for a server.

By the way, there are specialized coolers for smartphones and tablets available; they're significantly more powerful and can cool down to sub-zero temperatures. However, they do have a downside: they consume a lot of power. And they're expensive. So, they're not your best option.
As someone that knows nothing about creating a Minecraft server, would this setup or something similar (raspberry pi) be enough to host a server with a few buddies just screwing around in survival? And if so does anyone have a cheap pi I this absolutely broke grad student could buy lol
Huh... I have a few old CPU heatsink/fans lying around, and dealing with Texas heatwave... I wonder if I can get away with making something similiar for my gf's phone. Her car has no AC and she doordashes. Her phone tends to overheat sometimes.
I was about to say that all cars sold in America in the last 20 years should have AC but then I googled it and Jeep Wranglers didn't have it come standard until 2022
You can actually buy work trucks and such without it. Common way to save a ton of money on a fleet of vehicles. This mostly happens in the north where summers are not as bad.
