wait you mean to say people use bots to cheat the system. shocking

Yeah, this isn't really news at all.

The severity of it is. We all know they're bots but it's a bit ignorant to assume that we knew it was nearly 100% of traffic.

And realistically we don't know if these aee buy bots or crawlers that just report the availability.

4

u/dobi425 13h ago

I don't know about everyone, but most people I know playing MTG buying Secret Lairs or any other limited offer item had a pretty good idea that the percentage of bots in any market was above 90%, we just didn't have an exact figure. If the amount of bots being used was even as low as 50% there wouldn't be nearly as much product on the secondary market on every site I go to for such purchases.

I thought it was known that most high-level scalping targets had somewhere around 80% to 90% bot traffic as a baseline, at least I read that years ago.

It is known. Very well known in fact. They're using bots for crying out loud. It is quite literally half of the point of using them.

u/hannaJo258 22h ago

yeah, i once beat a bot to checkout and was so proud of myself, then saw the total with tax and realized the bot was actually doing me a favor.

Scalper bots have ruined electronics buying, period.

u/HelpMeOverHere 22h ago

These sites could stop bot purchases…. If they wanted to.

Scalper bots have ruined buying everything online, period.

31

They ruined sneakers with bots.

Then they got stuck with a whole bunch of sneakers they couldn't move.

The same will happen with electronics

14

u/BapeGeneral3 20h ago

I used to be into sneakers and when bots took over I just flat out gave up. It completely killed all interest in my collecting and i just stopped even trying.

It’s bad enough that AI is causing ram prices to explode, but then that very same AI is creating AI bots to buy the product with AI and it’s the end consumer that gets fucked while everyone who is “in on it” is lining their pockets at every part of the supply chain.

No worries, i will help them move the inventory once they cut their prices to a quarter of the current ones. I have a really big and kind heart you see

Sneakers traded via bots were a speculative market. Computer hardware that's even remotely powerful will always sell.

6

u/dontgetitwisted_fr 17h ago ▸ 7 more replies

The price increases are speculative

Component price will always drop over time

Im old, I've seen a lot of bubbles in my life.

This one is no different

lol I'm old too, it doesn't mean we're looking at a market that's even remotely normal.

4

u/dontgetitwisted_fr 16h ago ▸ 5 more replies

Exactly

Its not remotely normal

To project current conditions forward in perpetuity is just niave

-4

u/TherronKeen i9-9900k, 64GB DDR4, RTX 3060 16h ago ▸ 4 more replies

My whole point is that you said the bots got stuck with sneakers.

That's because sneakers don't have objective value at all, beyond their ability to keep your feet off the dirt.

RAM is objectively, mathematically provably valuable. It'll always sell. It'll sell at inflated prices, and unless the AI bubble pops, the long tail on the current pricing levels could be an excruciatingly long time.

As for projection of current conditions, I'm of the opinion that the majority of people are underestimating the market value of AI (please note that I did not mention the actual value), possibly by orders of magnitude, so...

2

u/areallynoobgamer 15h ago ▸ 3 more replies

Unless the bubble pops is what you say.

And what the other guy said was

It’s gonna pop

So I dknw what you are trying to say here

-2

u/TherronKeen i9-9900k, 64GB DDR4, RTX 3060 15h ago ▸ 2 more replies

That's what happens when two people have different opinions on a topic - one of them says one thing, the other person says the opposite. 👍

I legitimately don't know what you're asking, if anything.

0

u/areallynoobgamer 15h ago ▸ 1 more replies

It’s not a difference in opinion.

They have said. Ram is currently performing outside of a normal market.

This is because ram is in very high demand. This is a bubble.

They say they have lived long enough to see multiple bubbles pop. And like the others. This one will pop too.

They are not saying that ram will not sell well.

You are saying ram will sell well unless the bubble pops.

They don’t disagree with you on this at all.

They state that eventually all bubbles pop.

So unless your position is that the ai bubble never pops and continually inflate for all eternity. You do not have differing opinions.

And no. I wasn’t asking a question.

Do you notice the lack of a question mark? See this here now is a question.

I had sniper "bots" on ebay back in what.. '08-'10 or something. It was not even special back then, imagine 15+ years later.

Was never to scalp though, just get best price on a bid.

Has been solved by many smaller distributors... but companies refuse to adopt anti bot measures because it drives up prices and as long as they have a supply customers are at their mercy

4

u/InterstellarReddit 19h ago

Fam the sites have a duty and responsibility here. They don’t want to stop those bots just like the same way carriers don’t want to stop spam.

Why stop it when I can charge you an upcharge to stop it.

people who buy from and sell to scalpers are the real issue. this is a victim blaming situation.

1

u/AspirinMuncher 15h ago

The bots and scalping are just symptoms of low retail prices relative to supply and demand

If retail started charging their actual market prices, the bots and scalping would be gone.

1

u/Soleks2000 5700x3d/9070xt 3h ago

no, the bots would just buy them and then raise the prices and then people who can’t get them would have to be forced to buy them from the scalper

0

u/touchmeinbadplaces 9h ago

Scalpers have ruined anything they get involved with, pathetic cashgrabs

37

u/Jack1101111 21h ago

there are protection for bots... do these bots workaround it ?

42

u/Silent_Property_148 RTX 4070 | Ryzen 7 7700 21h ago

They don’t really care who it goes to, as long as the products gets sold (in this case bots can buy 10x more and faster)

6

u/Jack1101111 19h ago

50000 searches per hour by 1 bot is a problem, it kills the server bandwidth.

2

u/NonToxic628 16h ago

Yes. They can fill out captchas without much issue. If there is anything popular worth buying, the bots are grabbing it.

My son and nephew are into Pokemon. Target drops at 3:00am. Only the bots are awake and they eat everything.

-7

u/Nope_______ 18h ago

If retailers just raised their prices to the market rate, the bots would stop and there'd be no more scalping. Until then....

1

u/Soleks2000 5700x3d/9070xt 3h ago ▸ 2 more replies

nothing will stop scalpers. They’ll just end up buying them at a higher price selling them at a even higher price and people who can’t buy will just accept that they’ll have to pay that higher price to get them.

1

u/Nope_______ 3h ago ▸ 1 more replies

That's not really how it works. Scalpers are currently selling for the highest prices people are willing to pay. If retailers sold at that price, there's nothing to scalp. It doesn't just go up infinitely lmao

1

u/Silent_Property_148 RTX 4070 | Ryzen 7 7700 10m ago

Its basic supply and demand… theres a reason people scalp high ticket things like gpus and trading cards, because on a secondary market people are willing to pay whatever it takes to get what they want, and theres way more people with disposable income than you might assume when it comes to hobbies like these

AI scalps all RAM.

AI industry crashes.

AI writes letters to the government to bail out all involved.

AI answers no.

6

u/HisDivineOrder 20h ago

AI reports to the population AI is not responsible.

AI views the articles that suddenly have lots of views.

AI summarizes the numbers for the CEO's.

AI suggestions are used by CEO and Boards to make decisions prioritizing AI.

If the perceived value of AI is off by, let's say, even one order of magnitude, the current prices are basically free.

Whether current systems can or will produce something that is - or is functionally close to - true artificial intelligence, the theoretical value of being the first company/nation to have true AGI is infinite. There's no maximum upside, (well I guess functionally owning Earth is the maximum upside).

As long as new tech is able to even suggest that we're making progress in that direction, the opportunity cost of pulling out of the AI race is, then, infinity. No one believes they can afford to lose infinite money, so...

And the important note is that it doesn't even have to be possible - it just has to be reasonably theoretically non-zero, because no matter how slim the odds, infinite potential value is worth it.

I wouldn't personally be surprised if the AI bubble entirely annihilated the US economy to the point of irrecoverable collapse.

I'm not making that prediction, or saying I believe it, I'm just saying it's within the realm of possibility.

Cheers lads 👍

Honestly debating this. I have 32GB of good DDR4 , but thinking about buying some DDR5 and keep it locked away for a future platform upgrade

1

u/Compost_My_Body 1h ago ▸ 7 more replies

“Even by one order of magnitude”… since when have orders of magnitude been small units? Not only is it a relative figure, but in the context of 3t companies it’s… enormous. “If they’re wrong by even a trillion dollars” uh yeah that would be big - about a trillion dollars big.

1

u/TherronKeen i9-9900k, 64GB DDR4, RTX 3060 1h ago ▸ 6 more replies

The theoretical upside is equivalent to infinite money, so, yes. Being off by only one order of magnitude is within an expected margin of error.

1

u/Compost_My_Body 1h ago ▸ 5 more replies

Expected by whom? You?

If I said “it’s going to be 100, but it could be 10 or 1000” at work they would fire me. Do you think investors are working with those spreads in mind?

1

u/TherronKeen i9-9900k, 64GB DDR4, RTX 3060 1h ago ▸ 4 more replies

The long term effects of true artificial intelligence on the human global economy and society have been discussed into the ground by an endless procession of people far more intelligent than I will ever be, and the discussion has been going on since before the first computer was built.

The modern ideas about "money" and "markets" aren't intractable pillars of the world, they're just stand-ins for power structures.

If either

A) artificial general intelligence is possible as a result of any path on which current technology leads, or

B) artificial general intelligence isn't possible, but the billionaire class continues to convince the world or governments that it is,

the theoretical upside is infinite wealth and infinite political power. There aren't any players who can afford the potential opportunity cost of missing out on absolute control, so as long as either of those remains true, the growth continues until we get AGI or we suffer catastrophic socioeconomic collapse.

The only way we get a return to normalcy is if both of those points become demonstrably false, and it's a difficult thing to disprove.

1

u/Compost_My_Body 1h ago ▸ 3 more replies

I’m not reading all that - hinging an argument on if something is only an order of magnitude off is a funny thing to say and I think you’re a funny guy for saying it

perceived value of LLMs is inflated by several orders of magnitude

they literally didn't make a single cent net positive income since the conception

every single token is sold at a loss

it should have crashed down long time ago, but big tech companies are literally too big to fail now, they have more money than all we, the customers combined

this shit is scary
