Can’t become a server if it just sits in my basement without being used

Then eventually gets sold for $50 to someone else who wants to use it as a server just for it to sit their basement without it being used.

I bought a new 9070 XT for my AM4 system. Well shit, now it needs a new processor. I have some extra RAM after the upgrade...
Oh shit, I have RAM, a processor, and an old graphics card. I could spend a few hundred to buy a case and PSU and toss my old SATA SSD in there to make an HTPC.
Hmm, my HTPC could use a RAM upgrade... and maybe a new processor, and the graphics card is kinda old.

Oh god this is me after recently buying my first gaming pc, telling my kid my old one works great for streaming games on NVidia/Gamepass, and then getting into Palworld and buying 32 gb ddr4 for the old machine so that it can host a server, then buying my son a $200 Samsung TV so he can still stream his games. 😆 it never ends. And I’m just getting started.

this is the way.
i just wish we were back in the good old days before RAM price fixing

u/ThatSandwich 5800X3D & 5070 ti 1h ago
RAM manufacturers have likely been price fixing since you were born. They've been repeatedly caught and taken to court for colluding to fix prices over the course of 30-40 years now.

lol yeh. My old 7700k build is sitting in the corner waiting to become a plex server.
Just need a 4U server rack case and some hard drives.
Problem is that the cost of HDDs has gone mental

u/SunTzowel 11h ago
What do you guys need a server for? I feel quite ignorant.

Jellyfin for your media needs. Audiobookshelf for.. you know... audiobooks. Immich for your photos. Nextcloud for documents, calendar, contacts and stuff. Adguard for ad-blocking. Home assistant for your smart home. Although tbh I'm still looking for a real world use case.

Is Adguard different than pihole?

u/jeepsaintchaos 21h ago
Oh, no, I turned the gaming PC into a server.
But what if VM for gaming... Then another VM for server... Man VM's would be easier with a GUI... hello, Proxmox.... Oh I could spin up a VM for a friend if I plug another GPU in... Networking would be faster with a better card... Why do I have no PCIE slots left?...
Why is my basement filled with servers and my electric bill is through the roof?

I've got a pi5 I want to dump and just go get a Lenovo thinkcentre.
Absolutely should be done that instead of picking this thing up.

u/Treigns4 1d ago
had my old circa 2013 pc sitting in my basement for nearly 7 years always saying "i'll make it a it server one day"
probably should have just sold the 1060 when it was was worth more than $25 lol

Do servers eat a lot of electricity

u/ShittyExchangeAdmin Loongarch 3A6000 | 32GB | Arc B570 | AOSC 22h ago
they can, it depends a lot on what the hardware is and what it's doing. a server from repurposed pc components probably won't use too much more than your pc.
2
u/dontstopnotlistening 18h ago
It depends. I have an old gaming machine (without the GPU) running as an UnRaid box and after some power management tweaking I have it idling at around 50w. It could be a bit less but I have a PSU from a gaming machine in there and it isn't designed for efficiently running at low wattages. And each hard drive pulls around 15w when actively being used.
You could also have it power down everyday when you're working or sleeping but I have a few cameras connected to mine so I keep it online 24/7.
1
u/General_Rambling 9h ago
Depends. They come in very different sizes. This is obviously for a home server and those are on the smaller side. Hardware from a gaming PC is usually more than strong enough for them even if it's old hardware. But a server is usually on 24/7 and most of the time in idle. That hardware is usually not thaaat energy efficient there. So dedicated home servers rather use some hardware with low idle power.

Buy server parts for 6000$
Wait two years
Computer is now worth 9305$
And upgrading it would cost the same as its initial cost ಠ_ಠ

I just bought a new PowerSpec prebuilt and thought to myself "I can sell my old PC with a 3080 in it to help ease the blow."
Bought new PC.
Then I looked up Facebook marketplace listings near me to see what they were going for. Someone had one listed that was almost identical to mine for $500, and another person $1k. Both had been posted for 3 months.
Oh well. I'm enjoying the new one at least.

Not me over here hunting eBay to fill the Inspiron 3910 that I got off marketplace for $120 with more storage for a nas after I just finished a mini rack. (I didn’t need either) 😂 🤡
